Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 29, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was a perfect 4-0 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Peoria DH Jesus Baez, hit two doubles and drove in three. Other standouts: Matt Lloyd, Aaron Wilkerson, Michael Watson, Hunter Hayes, Braden Davis, Ryan Campos, Christian Martin and Jalin Flores.

Memphis Redbirds 7 at Oklahoma City Comets 3

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds bested the Comets in Oklahoma City on Thursday, their eighth straight road win.

Aaron Wilkerson started for Memphis. The right-hander pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Alex Cornwell yielded a run over two innings in relief of Wilkerson. Zack Weiss gave up a run in one inning. Left-hander Nick Raquet tossed a scoreless ninth and collected his third save with Memphis.

In the first, Bryan Torres drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Blaze Jordan singled to advance Torres to third. Matt Koperniak was hit by a pitch to load the bags. Matt Lloyd cleared the bases with a double to put Memphis in front 3-0.

Lloyd advanced to third on a balk and scored on Noah Mendlinger’s sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

The Redbirds added a run in the fourth. Michael Siani walked, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. JJ Wetherholt brought Siani home on a groundout to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Oklahoma City plated a run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings.

Memphis plated a pair of runs in the eighth to regain the five-run advantage at 7-2. Gavin Collins singled and Siani walked. Mike Antico lined a double to bring both runners home.

Memphis never trailed in the victory.

The Redbirds scored seven runs on 10 hits. Lloyd was 2-for-5, including a double, a run scored, and three RBI. Antico doubled and drove in two. Mendlinger singled and tallied an RBI. Wetherholt doubled and recorded an RBI.

On the bases, Siani swiped his 19th bag of the season. Torres stole his 26th.

Defensively, center fielder Siani committed a fielding error.

Memphis is 69-58 on the season, and 28-26 in the second half.

Friday’s game: at Oklahoma City, RHP Zach Plesac (1-6, 9.52) vs. LHP Zach Penrod (2-1, 5.27) 7:05 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 6, Midland RockHounds 3

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals edged the Midland RockHounds at Hammons Field on Thursday.

Chen-Wei Lin started for the Cardinals in his Double-A debut. The right-hander recorded just one out and allowed three runs on one hit, three walks, and one strikeout in a rough outing.

Ricardo Velez took over and allowed two of Lin’s inherited runners to score. Overall, Velez pitched 3 ⅔ scoreless innings with three strikeouts for his fourth win. Hunter Hayes fanned a pair of batters across three shutout frames. Randel Clemente threw a scoreless eighth. Michael Watson struck out the side in the ninth and picked up his third Double-A save.

Midland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Springfield tied the game in the home third. Trey Paige and Brody Moore singled. Chase Davis followed with a walk to load the bags. Dakota Harris’ single brought Paige and Moore home.

Leonardo Bernal legged out an infield single to tie the game at three apiece.

Springfield took the lead in the fourth. Zach Levenson was hit by a pitch. Ramon Mendoza and Miguel Ugueto walked to load the bases. Moore lined a double to plate Levenson and Mendoza and put Springfield in front 5-3.

The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth. Ugueto lined a single and swiped second base. Paige hit an infield single to move Ugueto to third. Mendoza brought Ugueto home with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-3.

Springfield did not allow a hit with runners in scoring position in the victory.

The Cardinals scored six runs on 10 hits. Harris was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Moore was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Mendoza walked, doubled, scored, and drove in one. Paige singled twice and scored.

On the bases, Ugueto swiped his seventh bag. The Cardinals did not commit an error.

Springfield is 76-47 on the season, and 33-21 on the season. They hold a two-game lead in the Texas League North Division.

Friday’s game: vs. Midland, LHP Pete Hansen (7-4, 3.76) vs. Yunior Tur (4-8, 2.87) 7:05 PM CT.

Peoria Chiefs 5, South Bend Cubs 2

The High-A Peoria Chiefs defeated the South Bend Cubs at Dozer Park on Thursday.

Braden Davis started his seventh game at High-A. The left-hander threw 5 ⅓ innings and allowed two runs on one hit, three walks, and eight strikeouts. Davis earned his third win with Peoria, highlighted by fanning the side in the third inning. Heading into the sixth, he had a no-hitter.

Jack Findlay fired 1 ⅔ shutout frames in relief of Davis for his third scoreless outing to begin his High-A career. Mason Burns finished the win with two scoreless innings.

Peoria struck first with a run in the first inning. Ryan Campos walked and stole second. Campos advanced to third via a throwing error and scored on a Jesus Baez double.

Peoria added a pair of runs in the fifth. Tre Richardson and Jose Cordoba walked. Campos’ groundball single scored Richardson with Cordoba to third.

Cordoba crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 3-0.

The Cubs shrunk the Chiefs lead to one with a two-run sixth.

Peoria immediately took the runs back in the seventh. Campos hit his 22nd double of the season and scored on a double from Baez. Following a Travis Honeyman walk, Deniel Ortiz singled home Baez to move the Chiefs ahead 5-2.

Peoria’s pitching was dominant as they allowed just two hits in the win.

The Chiefs scored five runs on nine hits. Campos was a perfect 3-for-3 plus two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI. Baez was 2-for-4, including two doubles, a run scored, and three RBI. Ortiz singled and drove in a run.

On the basepaths, Campos swiped two bags to increase his season total to 13. Sammy Hernandez and Andrew Sojka were each caught stealing second base.

The Chiefs did not commit an error on defense.

Peoria is 47-74 overall, and 21-35 in the second half.

Palm Beach Cardinals 9 at Jupiter Hammerheads 6

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals slugged their way to victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday.

Jacob Odle made his 12th start for Palm Beach. The right-hander pitched 3 ⅔ innings and allowed four runs on six hits, five walks, and four strikeouts.

Hunter Kublick yielded two runs across 2 ⅓ innings in long relief of Odle and collected his third win. Anthony Watts made his professional debut and threw a shutout seventh with a strikeout. Charles Harrison allowed four baserunners over the final two innings, but did not allow a run for his third career save.

Palm Beach flexed their muscles in the first inning. Christian Martin belted his second career home run, a solo shot, to put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Jupiter plated three runs in the bottom of the second to jump ahead.

The Cardinals erupted for a six-run third inning to reclaim the lead. In his professional debut. Alex Birge was hit by a pitch. Ryan Weingartner reached on a fielding error, with both runners advancing. Martin walked to load the bases. Jalin Flores lined a single to bring Birge and Weingartner home. Michael Dattalo reached on a fielder’s choice, with Flores to second base via the second error of the frame, and Martin home for a 4-3 Cardinals. Jose Suarez singled to load the bases once more. Luis Pino followed with a second consecutive single to plate Flores. Dattalo scored on a Yordalin Pena sacrifice fly. Birge collected his first professional hit with a single to score Suarez for a 7-3 lead.

The Hammerheads moved within a run after pushing across a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

The Cardinals tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. With two outs, Dattalo and Suarez lined back-to-back singles. Pino hit a third consecutive single to score Dattalo and move the Cardinals ahead 8-6.

After a rain delay, Palm Beach extended their lead to three with a run in the ninth. With two outs, Weingartner took a walk. Martin singled, with Weingartner to third via a throwing error. Flores singled home Weingartner for a 9-6 Cardinals lead.

Palm Beach recorded six hits with runners in scoring position in the victory.

The Cardinals scored nine runs on 14 hits. Martin was 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored, and a home run. Flores singled twice, scored a run, and plated three. Pino singled twice and drove in two. Birge walked, scored a run, singled, and drove in a run in his first career game. Suarez hit three singles and scored a run. Dattalo singled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run.

On the bases, Suarez stole his 17th bag. Pena was caught stealing second base.

Defensively, Pena nailed a runner at third base from center field to highlight an errorless night.

Palm Beach is 58-63 overall, and 26-30 in the second half.
