The trade has just been announced. Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, and apparently more went back to the Red Sox.
Apparently Devers will be the Giants DH and still won’t play 3B unless it’s to spell Chapman. Chapman is currently on the DL.

Devers is obviously a first rate player and I’d say the Giants are entirely intent on unseating the Dodgers out there in the NLW. If I’m a Boston fan, I ain’t too happy this evening, but it looks like the Red Sox are off the hook for a bit more than $250M. At any rate, you have to give the Giants a little credit for being determined to go after the Dodgers. It’s always been my view that the LA/SF rivaly was by far the most intense and bitter in the NL.
I like this deal for the Red Sox. The Red Sox dump some major salary obligations and open up more playing time for their top prospects as they actually had a log jam of them. Kyle Harrison hasn’t performed great yet, but he is only 23 with great potential and will likely develop over time. James Tibbs is one of the other minor leaguers and looks like a bat first prospect, but one with a great bat.
I like this deal for the next couple of years for the Giants and it gives them an elite bat to go in their lineup and help them compete against the Dodgers. I don’t like this for the Giants in 4+ years as that Devers contract (Bloom signed it) is horrible for a bat first, only DH now that doesn’t look like the type to age super well.
Devers and the Red Sox got sideways over them asking him to play 1B and him publicly complaining about it. The relationship was never repaired. I agree that this is a good short term move for the Giants and perhaps a good long term move for the Red Sox.
Where it impacts the Cardinals is that it just takes away another potential playoff spot for this year. The Mets, Dodgers, Cubs, and Phillies are almost locks to be in the NL playoffs. This move certainly helps the chances for the Giants and moves them closer to lock status. The Padres are close as well.
That would leave teams like the Dbacks, Brewers, Reds, and Cardinals on the outside looking in as if we had a chance anyway.

That’s the same thing I was thinking after I heard about the Devers trade. Plus we have to go to San Francisco the last week of the year as well. Unlikely those games matter much to the Redbirds though.And on a side note…….Ohtani is starting for the Doyers tonight. Not sure how long they will let him go tonight. I would assume 3-4 innings. 75 pitches at the most.
Really looking forward to the Padres/Doyers game tonight!
The Giants have been in the hunt for a top tier talent for awhile now, but until this deal have fallen short. Now they get a guy, but have to give up some younger players who may or may not develop. If Devers is a difference maker it won’t be a good look for Boston sending both him and Betts out west.
Good point on the potential impact to the post season tourney with the Giants likely getting better.
Our club needs to get back to winning ways soon as we do not have much of a margin of error.
The Giants and Cards were similarly run organizations for the last 15 years or so. The Giants simply had to keep up with the Dodgers, whereas the Cards don’t have nearly that sort of juggernaut to deal with. Probably explains why the Giants have begun to swim in the deeper end of the salary pool, while the Cards are retreating to the kiddie end.
