Is Rincon the guy that jnevel was high on last year in the rankings? I can’t recall but I feel like it may have been.
It’s good to see Baez producing, even if it’s in a smaller sample. Guys like him are the kind of bets the Cards have taken and failed on, mostly. It would be good to turn one of them into a big league star. He’s very young so there’s a good amount of time.
I have always been higher on Rincon than most everyone. He doesn’t have a lot of internal talent. He has learned everything the hard way. But he learns. He makes progress slowly and steadily. He’s also fun to watch. I don’t have him in my top 20 or anything crazy like that, but I’ve had him in my top 50 for 3 or 4 years running now.
Roby didn’t have a great 1st start in Memphis. With Brian’s comment on the ball, I’m curious if that had a part. Roby threw a good amount of strikes overall, but I’m curious if that change in the ball impacted his stuff. 1 start though so it could be noise and we will see how he progress.
Gastelum has been performing much better. Since May 15th, he has pitched 12.1 innings 20 Ks to 1 BB, 6 hits and 1 run allowed. I would be looking at a promotion for him at the end of the month if he keeps it up. With his devastating changeup I think he is on track to pitch for the Cards sometime early next year.
Deniel Ortiz has been on fire lately as well and I love the raw power he has and ability to put the ball in the air. I don’t know what his defense looks like. I don’t see him being promoted soon though as he is a 20 year CC guy that needs to keep improving his contact rates.
Bernal continues to rake at AA and I love seeing the power improvements from him. It sounds like scouts think Bernals power is trending toward plus.
Wetherholt continues to perform very well in AA. He isn’t producing eye catching games, but is getting on base at a very good rate due to walking at a very high clip and walking more than striking out. I think there are still likely things for him to work on this month, but it will be interesting to see if come mid July with draft signees coming in and pushing other guys up levels.

Springfield has seemed to be the most interesting minor league team to watch. The top of the lineup and a chunk of the rotation provide a lot of excitement for the future, and they are close enough that you could see them helping the big league club out next season. Wetherholt, Bernal, Baez and Davis look to be on potential big league tracks, as do Roby, Henderson, Mautz, Gastelum and maybe Rincon, Rajcic and Church in various roles.

Yairo Padilla has been on fire in June. He is hitting .545 and has stolen 6 bases. Only 2 doubles though.
Hence did not pitch well in his rehab start for Peoria and appears to have had some command issues. He has not seemed right since coming back.

Somehow this toolsy 17 year old Venezuelan, whom the Cardinals inked for chump change (75K), has escaped even the slightest sliver of attention on Brian’s Wednesday podcasts. This should change as he begins his quick ascent through the Cardinals system starting in 2026. Not to let the cat out of the bag early, but SADS will definitely be cracking my 2026 Top 50 Cardinals Prospect list…….in a big way.
