The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, JJ Wetherholt, was 3-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Springfield’s win. Other standouts include Tekoah Roby, Josh Kross and Chase Adkison.

The Memphis Redbirds were Soundly beaten in Nashville by a 7-1 score on Friday.
Starter Quinn Mathews pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up four runs on five hits and struck out two to take his second loss of the season. The prospect lefty’s six walks tied his career high, set in his prior start. Mathews’ ERA through three 2025 outings is 6.10.
Curtis Taylor threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of hitless relief. Riley O’Brien surrendered three runs, two earned, in the seventh. Zack Weiss tossed a scoreless eighth.
Nashville put up three runs in the first inning and added a fourth run in the second.
Memphis scored their only run in the top of the seventh. Jimmy Crooks reached via an error and came home on a double by Ryan Vilade.

The Sounds increased their lead with three runs in the home seventh for the final margin of 7-1.
Memphis’ offense scored one run on three hits, two singles and Vilade’s double.
On defense, Crooks made a throwing error. Playing shortstop, César Prieto committed two errors, one fielding and one throwing. O’Brien picked a runner off first base.
The Redbirds are 6-5 on the season.
Saturday’s game: at Nashville, RHP Gordon Graceffo (0-0, 15.43) vs. TBD 6:35 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals edged the Sod Poodles by a 3-2 score on Friday for their fourth consecutive victory.
Starter Tekoah Roby was sharp once again. The prospect right-hander tossed four scoreless innings, allowed three hits, and fanned five. Roby departed after 55 pitches thrown.
Zane Mills relieved Roby and surrendered one run in three innings to earn the win. Sean Harney yielded one run in the final two innings to earn his second save.
Springfield went up 1-0 in the first inning. JJ Wetherholt and R.J. Yeager singled. Jeremy Rivas drew a walk. Jacob Buchberger walked and Wetherholt scored.
Amarillo tied the game in the fifth. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead. Chase Davis walked and Wetherholt singled. Yeager reached on an error that scored Davis. Rivas walked. Buchberger walked to score Wetherholt.

The Sod Poodles pulled to within one in the eighth but Springfield held on to win.
The Cardinals scored three runs six hits. Second baseman Wetherholt was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Buchberger had two RBI.
On the bases, Rivas stole his second base of the season. Wetherholt swiped his first bag.
Springfield is 6-1 on the season.
Saturday’s game: at Amarillo, Max Rajcic RHP (1-0, 0.00) vs. Spencer Giesting LHP (1-0, 0.00) 7:05 CT.
The High-A Chiefs are still seeking their first win of 2025 after being edged by the Cubs by a 4-3 score on Friday.
Starter Gerardo Salas pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up four runs on five hits, struck out three and walked one and took the loss.
Benjamin Arias threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Tanner Jacobson tossed the final two scoreless innings.
The Chiefs took a 3-0 lead in the second on a three-run home run by Chase Adkison. In the fourth, South Bend put up four runs to lead 4-3. Neither team scored again.

The Chiefs put up three runs on six hits. Miguel Villarroel was 2-for-4. Adkison had three RBI.
On the bases, Tre Richardson was caught stealing twice. On defense, Jacobson made an error on a pickoff.
Peoria is 0-6 on the season.
Saturday’s games: at South Bend, Cade Winquest RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Ryan Gallagher (0-0, 0.00) 2:05 CT (Game 1); Jose Davila RHP (0-0, 3.86) vs. RHP Connor Schultz (0-0, 6.75) (Game 2).
The Beach Birds fell to the Marauders by an 8-5 score on Friday. Starter Jason Savacool pitched five innings, gave up three runs on five hits and fanned four.
Angel Cuenca surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief and was tagged with a blown save. Randel Clemente yielded three runs in the final 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Bradenton scored first with one run in the second inning. The Beach Birds put up three runs in the fourth to lead 3-1. Yordalin Pena singled and Josh Kross doubled. Bryce Madron plated Pena on a single. Madron stole second and Kross scored on a throwing error. Madron came home on a single by Anyelo Encarnacion.
Palm Beach added a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Jonathan Mejia. The Marauders answered with two runs in the home fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Cardinals made it 5-3 in the sixth on a solo long ball by Kross. Bradenton responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
The Marauders put up three runs in the eighth to take the lead 8-5. Palm Beach failed to answer.
The Cardinals scored five runs on 11 hits. Kross was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Madron was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pena was 2-for-4. In his season debut, Travis Honeyman was 2-for-3.
On the bases, Madron and Kross each stole their first base of the season. Anyelo Encarnacion was caught stealing. On defense, Luis Pino had an outfield assist at home plate.
Palm Beach is 4-3 on the season.
