Long time subscriber, with a year gap, second time poster…

I just saw on the MILB site that the Cardinals have been awarded a Competitive Balance pick “B” (after the second round.

The Cardinals regularly received Competitive Balance draft picks until about 7 years ago Theo Epstein, then of the Cubs complained that the Cardinal franchise should not be eligible for a Competitive Balance pick. For the last 6-7 years the Cardinals did not receive a pick. Does anyone know what happened to again put the Cardinals into the pool of teams that were eligible to receive one.

Those picks were very valuable in the past, not only for the additional high pick itself, but also for trade purposes and the additional draft choice pool money that it gave the Cardinals.

    Thanks for any input.

As I understand it, the criteria to participate is being in the bottom 10 in revenue or residing in one of the 10 smallest markets. The formula also includes winning percentage, to set the order once teams qualify. My guess is their market position did not change, but their relative revenue position likely dropped (along with attendance). The latter must have been enough to get them into the group, which numbers 14 this year.

P.S. Thank you for your return business. It is very much appreciated.
