September 7, 2024 at 12:30 pm #266826It’s a genuine shame that with first and second place in four of the six Big League divisions separated by 4.5 games or less that MLB has removed the possibilty of some hotly contested playoff type baseball by effectively eliminating head to head competition between natural division rivals in the last full month of the regular season. If the MLB whiz-kids desired to bleed the majority of competitive excitement out of Sept. baseball, they’ve certainly achieved their goal with the silly new scheduling format.
September 7, 2024 at 1:18 pm #266827The new schedule sucks for sure. It pretty much kills division rivalries.

ParticipantYea it does kill rivalries a bit but at same time it may pit more teams that have a shot at playoffs against each other. I think that is what the league is trying to do. Kind of like the nfl has from week to week, games that mean something. I know its s shorter schedule which creates that in itself but lots of times the nfl will change what games are being played on tv and even when they are being played just to get more eyes on them. I think thats what mlb is going for. Rivalries interest the core fans of those teams but largely outside of those bases, it doesnt mean much. I still wish we were playing our own division more but i get what the league is doing.
September 7, 2024 at 2:07 pm #266831The September excitement was shifted away from division races and into the Wild Cards. zzzzz

ParticipantI could see a day where a league esp the nfl would cancel games altogether and reschedule almost on the fly to get more eyes on the games as well as more ad money. Lets say you get to ten games or so and X amount of teams are totally out of the playoff hunt, it almost makes sense to cancel those teams remaining games, reschedule the teams still in it with better matchups, reimburse the other teams for their missed homegames. Baseball could do a similiar thing. Im not for it but i could see it happening.
September 7, 2024 at 3:08 pm #266835Since the schedule algo doesn’t care about natural rivalries, and since the schedule is now balanced, there is no longer a reason to have divisions constructed by geographic region. It seems like it would make more sense to break it down by market size, or perhaps by payroll.

ParticipantWell back in the day they always mentioned the cost of travel such as fuel and other stuff which was the need for changing the makeup of divisions. I guess they dont worry about that stuff anymore.
September 7, 2024 at 4:24 pm #266838Yeah, neither travel nor rivalries applies anymore. It might be better to assure one division winner each from big, mid and small markets.
If you wanted to get fancy, you could have the 3 WC teams come one from each division to further dilute the benefit of overspending on payroll.
September 7, 2024 at 4:35 pm #266839It’s my view that rivalries increase as regional distances decrease. The Cardinals/Cubs, Yankees/Red Sox and Dodgers/Giants should always have at least six head to head matchups in the last 5 or 6 weeks of the regular season. Anything less constitutes sapping the game of suspense and spectacle when the marathon race of the regular season comes down to the wire. Bobby Thompson says so.
September 7, 2024 at 5:04 pm #266840I’m so excited about wild cards! MLB should add a few more and start the playoffs immediately after the all star break.
On a more serious matter, din-din tonight was meatballs and mashed potatoes, accompanied by freshly shucked peas and finished off with a thick slice of raspberry/chocolate cake. Hoping the Mariners will offer up a few juicy meatballs for our birds to mash over the outfield wall.

Houdini escapes.September 7, 2024 at 6:37 pm #266847I’m tired of Goldy striking out.
September 7, 2024 at 7:06 pm #266849I’m not supposed to mention it, but with Fermin in the lineup, the crappy hitter we bury in the 9 hole because he can’t hit is out hitting 5 of the other 8 in our lineup.
September 7, 2024 at 7:11 pm #266850It’s a lineup composed entirely of Bevacquas. I know this to be true because Tommy says so…
September 7, 2024 at 7:24 pm #266851
jj-cf-stlParticipantAfter that 4 out first, Gibson decides to strike em’ all out, instead.
September 7, 2024 at 8:05 pm #266852
jj-cf-stlParticipantFine start by Gibson.
JoJo does his Houdini act in the 7th.
0-0 at the seventh inning stretch.
September 7, 2024 at 8:08 pm #266853Evenly matched teams.
September 7, 2024 at 8:12 pm #266854We only have one hit and one walk through 7 innings.
September 7, 2024 at 8:27 pm #266855
jj-cf-stlParticipantFilthy. He just K’d Noot on 3 pitches, and Noot is the only one who has touched him up for a double.

Pages wants a Game Ball.
