Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 10, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-2 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day Hancel Rincón pitched seven scoreless innings on four hits in Peoria’s shutout win. Other standouts include Max Rajcic, Chase Davis, Ryan Campos, Chen-Wei Lin and Gavin Collins.

Memphis 3, Gwinnett 9

Wasting two home runs, the Triple-A Redbirds suffered a six-run loss to the Stripers (ATL) on Friday at AutoZone Park. Gordon Graceffo started and gave up six runs, five earned, in 3 1/3 innings. The inconsistent right-hander struck out three and walked three on the way to his sixth loss of the season.

Andre Granillo surrendered three runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Riley O’Brien and Nick Robertson combined for two scoreless innings. Connor Thomas tossed the final two scoreless innings.

Gwinnett scored the first run in the top of the second inning. Memphis re-tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Thomas Saggese.

The Stripers took a 2-1 lead in the third, then added five runs in the fourth to blow up the score to 7-1.  Two more runs in the fifth made it a 9-1 blowout.

The Redbirds rallied for two runs in the seventh to shrink the lead to 9-3. Alfonso Rivas singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gavin Collins followed with a two-run long ball to left field.

Memphis scored three runs on four hits. No Redbird had multiple hits. Collins had two RBI.

José Fermín stole his 15th base in 2024. Nick Dunn made a fielding error.

Memphis is 55-57 on the season, 17-20 in the second half. Memphis is in eighth place in the International League West, 7.5 games back of Columbus.

Springfield 0, San Antonio 9

The Double-A Cardinals were blown out by the Missions in a 9-0 shutout loss at Hammons Field on Friday. Max Rajcic started and threw 5 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on three hits, fanned eight and walked two. Rajcic took the loss.

The bullpen let what was a close game get out of hand. Nathanael Heredia relieved Rajcic and surrendered one run without recording an out. He wild pitched in two runs, one inherited from Rajcic and one of his own. Roy Garcia followed with 2 2/3 innings in which he allowed six runs, two earned. Leonardo Taveras tossed a scoreless ninth.

San Antonio took the lead 1-0 in the fourth inning. They added two runs in the in the sixth and six in the seventh to widen the lead to 9-0.

Springfield’s sparse offense scattered four hits, all singles. They were 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

Noah Mendlinger was picked off and caught stealing. Jacob Buchberger made a fielding error.

Springfield is 59-47 on the season, 22 -15 in the second half. They remain in first place in the Texas League North.

Saturday’s game:  vs. San Antonio, LHP Alex Cornwell (5-2, 5.85) vs. Sam Whiting RHP (0-0, 0.00) 6:35 CT.

Peoria 1, Cedar Rapids 0

The High-A Chiefs blanked the Kernels by a 1-0 score at Dozer Park on Friday. Right-hander Hancel Rincón pitched seven scoreless innings with four hits allowed, four strikeouts and one walk to earn his eighth win.

Tanner Jacobson followed Rincon with two scoreless innings of relief and he received his third save.

The only run of the game came for Peoria in the third inning, Miguel Villarroel singled and later scored on a single by Chase Davis.

The Chiefs tallied one run on six hits. Davis was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Villarroel swiped two bases. Rincon picked a runner off first base.

Peoria is 47-58 on the season, 21-19 in the second half, and are in second place in the Midwest League West, three games back of Wisconsin.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Cedar Rapids, Pete Hansen LHP (5-6, 3.67) vs. Connor Prielipp LHP (0-1, 5.79) 7:05 CT.

Palm Beach 9 at Dunedin 1

The Low-A Cardinals pounded the Blue Jays on Friday by the score of 9-1. Chen-Wei Lin took the mound for Palm Beach. The right hander pitched five innings, gave up one run on three hits, fanned eight and walked two to earn his eighth win of the season.

Michael Watson relieved Lin and threw two scoreless innings of relief. Randel Clemente tossed the final two scoreless innings.

The Beach Birds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Lizandro Espinoza reached on a wild pitch third strike.  Ryan Campos singled and Espinoza advanced to third. J.J. Wetherholt drove in Espinoza on a sac fly.  Campos later scored on a single by Sammy Hernandez.

Palm Beach added to their lead with a four-run second inning. Anyelo Encarnacion began with a walk. Espinoza singled. Campos plated Encarnacion on a single. Wetherholt received a free pass to load the bases. Ian Petrutz was hit by a pitch and Espinoza scored. Campos came home on a walk to Josh Kross. Brayden Jobert drove in Wetherholt on a sac fly.

The Cardinals increased their lead to 8-0 in the third. Encarnacion and Espinoza singled. Wetherholt sent Encarnacion home on a single. Espinoza scored on a force out by Petrutz.

Dunedin scored their only run in the fifth. Palm Beach topped off their win with a final run in the ninth.  Cade McGee doubled and came home on an Encarnacion single.

The Cardinals scored nine runs on 10 hits. Campos was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Espinoza was 2-for-6 with three runs scored. Wetherholt and Petrutz each had two RBI.

Hernandez stole his third base. Espinoza had an outfield assist at third base.

Palm Beach is 66-39 on the season, 26-10 in the second half. They remain in first place in the FSL East

DSL Cardinals 7 at DSL Mariners 3

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals beat the Mariners by a 7-3 score on Friday. Right-hander Branneli Franco took the mound for the Cardinals and pitched 4 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits, fanned five and walked four.

Justin Hernandez relieved Franco and surrendered one run in one inning. Xavier Cruz tossed the final 3 1/3 scoreless innings on two hits, no walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals put up three runs to gain a 3-1 lead. Daniel Rojas drew a walk and Paulo Asprilla singled to left. Cristopher Lebron reached on an error to load the bases. Andru Arthur grounded out and Rojas scored. Yoerny Junco plated Asprilla on a sac fly. Lebron came home on a fielding error.

The Mariners responded with one run in the home fifth and tied the game in the sixth.

With the score 3-3 going into the ninth, the Cardinals took the lead with four runs. Lebron singled. Junco slapped a bunt single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Rainiel Rodriguez was intentionally walked. Facundo Velasquez received a free pass and Lebron scored. Brayan Amoroso followed with a double that drove in Junco and Rodriguez. Velasquez came home on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals scored seven runs on eight hits. Junco was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lebron was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Amoroso had two RBI.

Fernando Roquez stole his first base of the season. Junco and Rodriguez were both caught stealing.

Lebron made a fielding error. Asprilla had a passed ball.

The Cardinals are 23-22 on the season and are in fifth place in the DSL Central Division.
