That’s the worst starting lineup we’ve thrown out all season. Only be worse if you flipped Edman for Fermin.

Burnes might strike out 17 in 7 innings against this lineup. Gotta hope that the youngsters keep their head in the game – I am looking at you Querecuto.

It’s just about a meaningless game for both teams so what did you expect?

I am going to assume Burnes won’t go any more than 5 innings today since they will want him to be completely rested for next Tuesday. Or Wednesday. Or whatever day Milwaukee plays next week.

Din-din today will be some Hormel beef tips in the microwave, some mashed potatoes/gravy, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a bowl of Prairie Farms French Vanilla ice cream. All of this starts at about the time of first pitch. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch and tuning in.

The NL wildcard watch is going to be interesting. The Phillies look to be locked in as the number 4 seed and the Diamondbacks are currently the number 5 seed. The Cubs and Marlins are tied for the 6th seed and the Cubs play in Atlanta tonight and then finish the year with three in Milwaukee. If the Cubs end up getting the 6 seed then they would just stay in Milwaukee to play the number 3 seed Brewers in the best of three wild card round. The Cubs might end up playing six games in a row in Milwaukee.

I hope the Marlins end up getting the 6 seed so the Cubbies can be sent to the house for the winter.

I had forgotten about the early start time. Hudson allowed too much traffic and left trailing 3-0. Offense got the tying run to the plate in the ninth in the form of Winn, who fouled out to the catcher to end it. Masyn could add 40-50 points to his BA and still be bad. He has a long uphill to tackle.

I did too. I’ve said this before but there isn’t one single pitcher on this staff I’ll be excited to see next year. Not one.

Winn has got to get to the point where he can at least hit .200 – and then grow from there.

    Boy is struggling.

Had better things to do on a nice afternoon than watch this one, but saw the box score.

My thoughts on Winn, which I have mentioned a few times, are that he needs to be batter at pitch selection. He lets too many good pitches go by. But heck, the kid is so young. He will get there. Not many are a Bryce Harper or Al Kaline where at 20 years old they rake major league pitching.

Need to limp home in these final three versus the Redlegs, then hopefully come back strong in ‘24 with the likes of Goldschmidt, Arenado, Gorman, Donovan and Contreras in the lineup, and more maturity from Walker, Winn and even Nootbaar, and pitching that gives you a chance to win most every time out.

Looking at the NL Wild Card, Miami and Chicago are tied for the last spot, but the Marlins are a -58 run differential and the Cubs are +99. That is a big difference.

To some degree playing above or below your run differential is a reflection of management – winning or losing a lot of close ones. Skip has done a nice job in South Florida.

    Speaking of Bryce Harper…..

Tonight in Philadelphia he gets tossed by Angel Hernandez. Hernandez rung him up from 3rd base on a check swing on a 3-2 pitch. Harper went down the line after AH and got tossed. Then Harper tossed his helmet into the crowd.

And the replay showed he didn’t even come close to swinging. Another Angel Hernandez Special.

The Marlins are now 1/2 game ahead of the Cubs for the final playoff spot. The Marlins game last night in New York got suspended in the 9th inning and will be completed on Monday if necessary. Miami owns the tiebreaker advantage over Chicago so if they end up tied the Cubbies will be going home for the winter. Fingers crossed.
