LHP Drew Rom (0-2, 7.24) vs. LHP Andrew Abbott (8-4, 3.22)
Apple TV ONLY // KMOXSeptember 7, 2023 at 8:58 pm #233485Stupid Apple TV game. But at least I won’t have to worry about missing the game now. I’ll be at the Evansville Bosse Bulldogs at the Jasper Wildcats high school football game tonight. I am going to call this one 21-14 in favor of them there Jasper Wildcats.

I have not been on the evil OliMo destroying Goldy’s year batting him second bandwagon. But I like seeing him batting third. But now we have two low OBP guys at the top of the order. Edman is hot at least, that helps.

jj-cf-stlParticipantHey what happened? We gave our pitcher the lead and he put up a 0.
September 8, 2023 at 7:29 pm #233520You just needed to be patient jj.
I wonder what we are going to do with Rom? Its like we’ve seen this material before.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI expect the auditions to continue, but what this FO does is hard to predict.

jj-cf-stlParticipantHa! Liberatore is a reliever again! See what I mean? All over the map.
September 8, 2023 at 8:04 pm #233523Mo desperatly wants to find something Liberatore can do.
September 8, 2023 at 8:22 pm #233524Liberatore has looked great. Struck out three batters in a row.

ParticipantHow do we get a good look at young bats if they are platooned in meaningless games. No reason to pinch hit Burleson for Baker.
September 8, 2023 at 8:34 pm #233526Liberatore has looked great.
Yes, after coming in and walking the first guy to load the bases. By the standards of our pen, that is great.
September 8, 2023 at 9:00 pm #233527Liberatore did look great tonight. Yes, he walked the first hitter to load the bases with a ball 4 that wasn’t very close. But when he has his 95 mph version of his fastball, he just is a different pitcher. A lot of games he was pitching at 92/93 and he was too hit-able. I think that’s the key for him. Can he maintain velocity as a starter game after game. If not, then he needs to be in the pen.
September 8, 2023 at 9:11 pm #233528The Cardinals used 7 pitchers tonight. Only one has an ERA below 4.0
September 8, 2023 at 9:15 pm #233529Didn’t see or listen to the game, but just glanced at the box and saw 13 pitchers. That seems like quite a few for a game that ended with a difference of 5 runs.
September 8, 2023 at 9:24 pm #233530I’m more impressed by Helsley’s pitching line in the box than Liberatore’s. Looks like 11 pitches of which 8 were strikes with 2 K’s in a perfect inning of work. I’d have to guess that his performance next season will have tenfold the amount on impact on the Cardinal fortunes than will the performance of Liberatore. Helsley’s effective when his finger’s not broken…
September 9, 2023 at 6:33 am #233537I accept that Liberatore did well after the first guy. I am just so sick of relievers who come in and can’t throw strikes. We already have that guy.
Rom has had 4 starts now. The first two he was striking guys out, but he hasn’t been these last two. I zero in on that, because looking at his AAA record, a good K/9 was really about the only thing he had going for him. Results were not great otherwise, so it seems certain that the swing and miss is what appealed to Mo and the wonks. I guess the thinking is there is some raw material there to work with, but I am not sure how much sense it makes to be working with it in the ML rotation.
I am thinking that Edman is safe from being moved this winter apart from the intrigue of him maybe being the starting center fielder. There seems to be a practical necessity of having a plan B at short. Masyn should be fine, but he isn’t fine now, and we don’t know when he will be.
I get a feeling that the brass doesn’t really know what to do with the last few weeks of a lost cause season, so they are just doing stuff. Batting O’Neill second for example. Maybe the thinking there is he doesn’t tend to ground into DPs. But I see little future utility in giving him reps in the second slot.

September 9, 2023 at 10:04 am #233542Quite an impressive 3-1 road trip so far against one great team and one pretty good team. Maybe Ollie was right about us having a September To Remember. 🙂
September 9, 2023 at 10:39 am #233543Once the games matter again, then we will see who can play.
September 9, 2023 at 12:03 pm #233546I get that but I think some on here are disappointed when the Cardinals win because it doesn’t fit the prevailing narrative. Life is too short to be so gloomy all of the time.
September 9, 2023 at 12:56 pm #233550I’d say it’s imperative that the Cardinals place all their efforts and resources towards an all out banzai run to finish up ahead of the Pirates to avoid the dubious distinction of ending the ’23 season in last place of the weakest division in the NL. A last place finish in the NLC would not only be an utterly disgraceful and humiliating experience, but would also provide all of those Cubbie’s fans with fodder for years to come as they point their fingers at the team that displaced them as the genuine laughingstock of the NL…How demeaning is that scenario?
