This is latest published info on Edman:

    July 20, 2023
Edman (wrist) is scheduled to begin taking live at-bats early next week, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
    ANALYSIS
Edman is currently doing throwing and fielding work without issue, but the big test for his sore right wrist will be how it holds up against contact swings. The versatile 28-year-old has been on the shelf since July 7 and received an injection in the wrist over the All-Star break to aid the healing process. He could perhaps be activated late next week if there are no setbacks from this point forward.

Big Edman fan here…….not quite to the extent of the esteemed author of this thread, but a big fan all the same. You know, I must admit to not even missing Tommy right now. But if you really think about it, if ANY one of these Cardinals were to be off for a couple of weeks this season, would you truly be anxious day in and day out for their return? It’s been that kind of a season. Let us hope that we don’t see another year like this one anytime soon.

Sure shows how nice it is to have middle infield depth.

I was wondering when Edman might return as well. Fortunately we have some good depth, although if DeJong were to go down at the same time as Tommy, we might be forced to start Winn’s big league career early.

Donovan might be able to take on shortstop for awhile, but then he is a bit banged up as well.

I like Tommy Edman and think he has a lot of value but sometimes I think we go overboard with his exploits. If you look at the offensive numbers for this year you will see that his are no better than DeJong’s.

    They are substantially worse

I heard Rooney say Edman was due to take live BP off Wainwright sometime this series.

    Is it his throwing wrist?

Eddie is essential to the Cardinals.

In terms of WAR, Tommy is only #12 on our team. Not exactly what I call “essential” in using that metric.

However, Tommy is a versatile player and a hustler who when he is on his game is a valuable member of our club. He is the kind of player that plays above his stats – in other words, I think he is one of those guys whose value is not totally represented by the stat line. Still not essential in the way Arenado or Goldschmidt are, but a good guy to have on a ball club.

His career has trended a bit downward, although the recent injury has not helped. Will be interesting to see if he fits in the 2024 plans.

I haven’t checked to see where he ranked in years past, but I’d have to guess it was somewhere in the top 5 on the team. At any rate, that was then and it’s always a case of what have you done for me lately. And as you pointed out, he’s a valuable player who contributes to a team’s success in multiple ways. Other team’s are well aware of that fact and would love to have him on their roster. He’s one of my favorites, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him traded to a contender if only for the reason of being able to watch him contribute to another team’s attempt to win a WS title. He’s a fun player to watch when he’s out there scratching and clawing to cross HP or in the field taking away base hits.

The outfield that makes sense to me for next year has Edman in CF with Walker and Noot. This assumes Carlson has been kicked to the curb, Walker will at least begin the season in the OF, and O’Neill will be offed before he gets hurt again.

Bling raises a very good point. Who is the CF going ahead? Even if Edman is no longer needed to start on the infield, which appears to be the case, they don’t have a steady CF now or next year.

I do like Edman in CF with the ability to play some SS/2B. It’s really too bad that a guy like Antico hasn’t been able to keep going with the bat because CF looks like an open spot after Edman with Carlson out of style.

Keep your eye on Victor Scott, but he won’t be ready for a look until 2H 2024 at best.

The Cardinals seem content with Noot playing CF but I could see Edman getting a lot of time there in 2024.

Keep your eye on Victor Scott,

Especially since he may have some trade value by this winter, if he stays hot.

Yeah, we might need a shortstop more than a CF, depending.

Some intel from the official Cardinals site, on the ‘News” tab:

“On July 26, manager Oliver Marmol said Edman’s swing has been progressing. The hope is for Edman to take full swings from a pitching machine starting July 28.”

While looking for info on Edman, I happened to see this, conderning Walsh, which elicited an eyebrow raise:

“He was placed on Memphis’ 7-day injured list on Sunday morning and released an hour later.”

That seems like maybe it was rather precipitous, like the Cabrera DFA.

FWIW, I reported the unusual circumstances about Walsh at the time, but it was a day in between. I learned he went on the IL on Saturday and put it on the Matrix then, but it was not formally publicized until Sunday.

    From the article below:
“Walsh’s services and specifically, his 40-man roster spot, was the casualty. Oddly, the 27-year-old was placed on Memphis’ 7-day injured list on Saturday, only to be released on Sunday.”

Cardinals Add Motter Again, Release Walsh

We have plenty of intel here, too, but you have to look for it! (Of course it really helps to subscribe…)

“Oli Marmol said Tommy Edman (right wrist inflammation) will go out on a Minor League rehab assignment on Saturday. ”

That would give him two rehab games to play before the trade deadline, when the roster may change significantly.
