So, the makeup game from the rainout. Do they start all over? Or is this a suspended game and they start from where they left off?

The game from Friday will pick back up where it left off, with Goldy at the plate with a 3-2 count. Obviously, back when men were men they would have started over. Another aspect of turning the game into wimpball. I wonder if you have to have a paper ticket stub or if an electronic ticket from Friday would stay on your phone and you are supposed to have that still. Marmol has said the pen will handle the remainder of the game, with Matz still the starter for the regularly scheduled game this evening. He is considering using Mikolas again Monday since he only threw 38 or so pitches.

I wonder if this is a siuation where a 27th man can be added, and if anybody could be flown in over night.

I think it was me who was saying Lars Henry Arron Nootbaar and his thunder bat are perfect for the 3 hole. A real #2 hitter would have been on base ahead of him.

Yes, but the 27th man can only play in this regular (evening) game. The eligible players for the suspended game locked in when the lineup cards were exchanged.

I guess I must be a Polyanna because I can see the Cards having a lead will benefit from Friday game resuming, rather than starting over.

I want to say that Babe Ruth had 13 home runs rained out over the course of his career – from start overs.

First of all, i am pretty sure there are no polyannas in baseball.

Sometimes, like now, being true to the history and customs of the game outweighs whoever might benefit from throwing 100 years worth out the window.

I can’t imagine the legacy of the rule covering how suspended games were handled back to Abner Doubleday compared to today is important to many. Some changes to the rules make sense. IMO, this is one of them.

Everybody knows you have to play 5 innings or it doesn’t count. Those currently in charge feel entitled to make it up as they go along. One way or another, I’m sure it comes down to either money or generating the cleanest database for the wonks, like everything else that happens in the game.

Or just maybe everything that happens is not an evil conspiracy rooted in analytics. Sometimes you really stretch the limits of credibility to push your agenda.

The idea of giving players and teams statistical credit for actual innings played, rather than erasing them because of an uncontrollable factor, the weather, is hardly a revolutionary or complex, convoluted concept. But if you want to protest this as part of the perceived ruination of baseball, go for it. It may be lonely on that hill, though…

Seems like there have been suspended games in the past that started where they left off. But I am not sure what makes the decision to suspend a game and start from where it was when called, and what is it that causes a game less than 5 innings (4 1/2 if the home team is ahead) to be cancelled and replayed from the start?

Who knows bikemike. Maybe if the visitor is heading out of town they can’t continue it the next day. Its stupid enough starting a game off with a 3-2 count and 2 outs in the third. It would be even stupider if the first part of the game happened a month ago. By then your active roster might not correspond to the lineup card that had been handed in originally. So then what, you can only finish up that game with the players you still have who were on that card? The whole thing is nonsense. There is a reason it was done the way it was done.

In Game 1 of the ’82 NLCS the Cardinals caught a huge break when that game was cancelled just 2 outs before it would have been placed into the books. The Braves held a 1-0 lead with future HOF’er Phil Niekro on the mound and although the Cardinals threatened in the first inning, the knuckleballer had settled in and had baffled the Redbirds since. I was in attendance for both that afternoon’s washout and the next night’s 7-0, 3 hit shutout masterpiece from Forsch. Niekro said he could have worked the next night’s game and I remember being happy that Torre instead went with Pasqual Perez. At any rate, I always thought that in a game of that importance it would have perfectly fair to resume that washout from where it ended up the afternoon before with the Braves ahead 1-0.

Interesting 1TD. I actually met Phil Niekro at a local minor league game. It was after his pitching days and he was scouting our local 2A team for pitchers. Radar gunning them from the stands.Chatted a bit and he was a really nice guy. I asked him about his knuckle balls if he could spot throw them and he told me he knew the general area but even he didn’t know exactly where they were going.

He’d pitched well against the Cardinals earlier that season and I just didn’t feel comfortable with the seasoned veteran on the mound working to quite a few young guys in the line-up that hadn’t seen very much of him. He was no bargain. Another consideration was that often times when he pitched, hitters would be adversely affected when facing a different pitcher in the next game. Niekro could throw a genuine monkey wrench into a hitter’s rip for a week…Haha! I saw him work quite a bit when he was around and if he had those butterflies fluttering their wings the way he intended, he was a genuine headache.

Matz pitched well his last time out. Maybe he will make it two in a row…

Marmol used Stratton, Romero, Gallegos and Hicks while blowing the first game, what if we get a 2 or 3 inning start from Matz? Is Hudson in town?

Naile is shown as in the pen for the game. I was thinking he was in Memphis so maybe he is the 27th man.

I was hoping for a fast start to the 2nd half. We better win the next two. I am calling this one 8-3 Redbirds with Goldstein getting off the schneid with a couple of dongs in this one.

And why is Gorman still in the lineup? He can’t hit his way out of Aunt Jemima’s kitchen anymore.

    Well, how about anybody?????

And we now have another rain delay. Chip Caray said the sun is shining at the stadium but they are in a weather delay since there is bad weather all around them.

And, of course, the Reds and Brewers are also in a rain delay at Riverfront Stadium.

He sill hits better than DeJong and Edman.

Just looked at BA on Gorman , DeJong and Walker. All three about the same. Gormans got alot of 0fers lately but surprisingly Walkers doing ok for a rookie. I suppose Gormans got more future upside probably why they’re playing him. DeJong has rebounded alot from last year but hes up for renewal? Walker may hopefully surprise us next year. That would be great.
