Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 18, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-3 on Saturday, including two extra-inning defeats. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Taylor Motter, blasted two home runs in Memphis’ win. Other standouts include Chandler Redmond, Edgar Escobar and Jeremy Rivas.

Memphis 5 at Jacksonville 3

The Memphis Redbirds (36-32) topped the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA, 30-37) on Saturday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Michael McGreevy tossed six innings and surrendered two runs on seven hits and no walks. TCN’s no. 5 prospect fanned nine and earned his fifth win of the season with Memphis and seventh overall..

The Redbirds struck in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Iván Herrera scored one on a ground out and Moisés Gómez had an RBI single. After the Jumbo Shrimp plated one in the second, Memphis responded with two in the third. Herrera walked and Taylor Motter blasted a two-run homer.

In his first outing since April, Gordon Graceffo pitched two scoreless innings with three punchouts. Kodi Whitley saved his third game of the year despite yielding a run in the ninth.

In the eighth, Motter added one more run with a solo shot, his second of the game and fifth of the year.

In his first game of his rehab assignment from St. Louis, designated hitter Lars Nootbaar went 0-for-4. 

Motter went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Juniel Querecuto had the only other multi-hit game with two. The lineup went 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

On the bases, Matt Koperniak, Chase Pinder and Herrera all took one. Pinder was also caught stealing once.

Gómez made a fielding error.

Sunday’s game: at Jacksonville, TBA vs. RHP Jeff Lindgren 2:05 CT

Springfield 5, Tulsa 7 (12 innings)

The Springfield Cardinals (31-31) lost to the Tulsa Drillers (LAD, 39-23) in 12 innings at Hammons Field.

Starter Edgar Escobar pitched six innings and was charged with one run. The right-hander yielded four hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson surrendered three runs in two innings with four hits. Ryan Shreve recorded a scoreless inning.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the first three innings. In the first, Pedro Pagés hit his seventh homer of the season. Arquímedes Gamboa doubled in the second to add a run. Jacob Buchberger singled in a run in the third. Chandler Redmond tied the game in the eighth with a solo home run, his 18th of 2023, tops in the Texas League.

With a tie score through nine, the contest went into extra innings. Andre Granillo was touched for an unearned run in two innings with three strikeouts.

After the Drillers scored a run in the 11th, Springfield tied it in the home half. Nick Dunn singled to plate Gamboa. Mike Antico was thrown out at home as the winning run.

In the 12th, Chris Roycroft gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk. The right-hander took his first loss when the Cardinals could not respond.

Dunn, Redmond and Gamboa had two hits apiece. Every starter was on base at least once except Noah Mendlinger. The Cardinals had plenty of opportunities, but went 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position and struck out 16 times.

Buchberger and Antico both stole a base. In the field, Mendlinger recorded an outfield assist.

Sunday’s game: vs. Tulsa, RHP Wilfredo Pereira (5-3, 2.93) vs. RHP Nick Nastrini (2-2, 4.07) 1:35 CT

Peoria 3 at Lansing 5 (10 innings)

The Peoria Chiefs (30-32) fell to the Lansing Lugnuts (OAK, 29-32) in extra innings at Jackson Field.

Starter Dionys Rodriguez pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and five walks. The right-hander struck out three. In relief, Matt Hickey pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and fanned four.

The Lugnuts scored two runs in the fourth, but Peoria responded in the sixth inning with three runs. Jeremy Rivas hit an RBI double to plate one. Francisco Hernandez and Elijah Cabell singled to make the score 3-2. The Lugnuts tied the game in the ninth and took the lead in the 10th.

Andrew Marrero yielded three runs, two earned, in 1 1/3 innings on two hits, a walk and three strikeouts. The 23-year-old is 0-5 and has five blown saves this year.

Every player in the Peoria lineup had one hit. Again, missed opportunities contributed as the Chiefs went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.

Rivas stole a bag, his eighth of the season.

Palm Beach vs. St. Lucie – Suspended in the second inning

Due to rain in the Jupiter area, the Palm Beach Cardinals (35-26) and St. Lucie Mets (NYM, 22-38) game was suspended and will be completed as a doubleheader on Sunday.

Sunday’s games:

  • St. Lucie, continuation in the second inning, 11:00 CT (Game 1)
  • St. Lucie, RHP Hancel Rincon (5-3, 3.65) vs. LHP Felipe De La Cruz (2-4, 4.41) Time TBA

FCL Cardinals (4-4) – Off

DSL Cardinals 4, DSL LAD Bautista 9

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (3-7) were defeated by the Dodgers Bautista (10-0) on Saturday afternoon.

Starter Keiverson Ramirez pitched three innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, on eight hits, no walks and three strikeouts. The 17-year-old took his first professional loss. Justin Hernandez yielded an unearned run in two innings with three strikeouts.

After the Dodgers scored two runs in the first two innings, the Cardinals tied the game in the second. Yordalin Pena scored on a wild pitch and Paulo Asprilla came across on an error. The Dodgers recaptured the lead in the third.

Reliever Kener Perez was touched for two runs, one earned, in two innings on two hits and two punchouts. Giovanni Vargas gave up a run in one inning and Juan Severino allowed two runs, one earned, in the ninth.

In the eighth, the Cardinals put up two runs. Arfeni Batista scored on a passed ball. Angel Gil added one more with a double.

Batista and Gil had multiple hits with two. Pena and Daniel Rojas had the only other hits. The lineup went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

On the bases, Rojas took his third bag of the season.

In the field, Ramirez committed an error and shortstop Batista had four, three fielding and one throwing. That led to four unearned runs for the Dodgers.
