So Memphis got thrashed twice in games featuring bad pitching and no offense other than an occasional solo homer. Sounds familiar.

Sounds like Memphis is a “chip off the old block”!

For one day maybe, but for the season, the Cardinals would be delighted if they were three games over .500 as is Memphis. In fact, they would be in first place.

Ivan Herrera is putting together a very good season at Memphis, at least offensively. I haven’t seen his defense. It will be interesting to see what the organization does with him. Is he trade bait?

… seven shutout innings for streaking Springfield.

I have not paid a whole lot of attention to the AA squad. It had been my understanding that they didn’t have any pitching and not much in the way of intersting prospects, so I saw better uses for my time. What’s up down there?

Good question bling. Going into the season I thought they would be the weak link among the four full season clubs but they are playing surprisingly well. I know that Redmond, Antico, and Pages are having decent years with the bat but I am not sure what is going on with the pitching side. Wilfredo Pereira seems to have some good numbers.

Bling, your original assessment is mostly accurate. The difference of late is that the starting pitching has been better but the pen remains dead last in the league in ERA by a considerable margin.

Sometimes a guy or two will come out of nowhere and end up being very useful on the MLB roster. Noot and Donovan might fall into that catagory, although I don’t really remember if either got much tout. Maybe next year some time we will get a welcome surprise. Hopefully on the pitching side.

I’ve been watching Nick Dunn since his rookie season in ’18. The 5’8″ 5th rd pick has been a consistent .250 hitter but in his third year with AA Springfield he has finally broken out of his mediocre shell. Right now he has his his average up to .303 by hitting at a .382 avg and his ops at 1.049 in June. At age 26 the switch hitter should finally get a shot at AAA Memphis. His clock is ticking and its time to see what he is capable of.

Irving Lopez has already done that up to Memphis and back down to Springfield many times. Maybe they would try Dunn next time instead, but will there be an opening this season?

There are a lot of middle infielders at Memphis already. Robertson, Robinson, Winn, Motter, Querecuto and Fermin (who is rehabbing in the FCL now) plus the new guy they claimed the other day, Palacios. That is seven. Some can play short and third, as well as second, but still, there is a glut currently.

The Redbird roster should be able to supply the Cardinals with a middle infielder that will help them if need be. I don’t see much help down there. ps…. You can add Baker to the INF list also.

I was focused on middle primarily, but you can add Yepez to Baker if you want to get crazy.

The Cards catching depth seems inspiring all of a sudden.

    – Knizner is not a terrible backup by any means
    – Herrera has a .960 OPS in AAA
    – Pages has a .852 OPS in AA
    – Bernal is holding his own in A ball, with a .732 OPS in A ball, and only 19

My point is Herrera might be a pretty darn good trade chip for a top tier SP.

We will just be developing catchers for other teams for the next 4 1/2 years. Meanwhile, Contreras is 31, so this is like hump day. Prime time doesn’t last forever for a catcher not named Yadi. Its just a sickening situation with no plausible good outcome.
