Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 8, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Michael Curialle, was a home run shy of the cycle plus two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Iván Herrera, L.J. Jones, Jeremy Rivas and Cade Winquest.

Memphis 4, Jacksonville 7

The Memphis Redbirds (20-13) fell to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA, 17-14) on Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

In his first Triple-A start of the year, Zack Thompson surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

After the Jumbo Shrimp scored two in the first, Memphis answered in the home half. Iván Herrera doubled to bring in Masyn Winn (walk) and Jordan Walker (HBP). Luken Baker brought Herrera home for the 3-2 lead.

Lefty Connor Thomas, whose regular turn was Sunday, yielded five runs, three earned, on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. TCN’s no. 19 prospect fanned three and took the loss, his second against four wins. Grant Black tossed two scoreless innings to finish.

Jacksonville scored five runs against Thomas between the fifth and sixth innings, but the Redbirds could answer with only one more run. In the eighth, Baker brought Winn across after he singled. With the bases loaded and one out, Oscar Mercado and Juniel Querecuto struck out to end their last major threat.

Herrera and Baker plated two runs apiece. Chase Pinder and Mercado walked twice. The lineup recorded four hits, six walks and went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

On the base paths, Winn, Walker, Mercado and Kramer Robertson all stole a bag.

The Redbirds went 2-4 against the Jumbo Shrimp this week. They are in first place in the International League West by half a game.

Springfield 2, Arkansas 10

The Springfield Cardinals (13-14) were handily defeated by the Arkansas Travelers (SEA, 16-11) at Hammons Field.

Starter Brandon Komar was charged with six runs, five earned, on four hits and three walks in four innings. The right-hander struck out four and took his second loss of 2023. Chris Roycroft’s Double-A debut was rough as he surrendered four runs, three earned, in 2/3 of an inning.

The Cardinals struck in the first inning as Justin Toerner blasted a solo home run, his first of the year. Arkansas responded with two in the second. In the sixth, the Travelers blew the game wide open, scoring eight times to make the score 10-1. L.J. Jones plated a run in the ninth inning.

With the damage done, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings. Ryan Shreve struck out one in two perfect innings.

Springfield’s lineup recorded six hits, took four walks and left five runners on base. Jones went 3-for-3 with a walk but the bottom four batters all went hitless. The defense committed two errors but turned two double plays.

Springfield is in fourth place, four games behind first-place Tulsa in the Texas League North. They went 4-2 against the Travelers this week.

Peoria 2, Wisconsin 1

The Peoria Chiefs (15-12) edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (MIL, 8-18) to complete the series sweep at Dozer Park.

Ian Bedell, who took the mound ahead of announced starter Dionys Rodriguez, spun a scoreless four innings with four strikeouts. TCN’s no. 37 prospect gave up only one hit and a walk in his first start of 2023.

The Chiefs scored both runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Jeremy Rivas blasted a two-run homer, his first in High-A.

Dionys Rodriguez yielded a run in four innings on two hits and no walks. TCN’s no. 28 prospect earned his first 2023 win. Matt Hickey saved his third game of the year after a scoreless ninth.

Rivas went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Victor Scott II had a triple and Nathan Church singled. The rest of the lineup did not reach base. The pitching shut down Wisconsin on only five hits and one walk.

Peoria swept the Timber Rattlers this week to go three games above .500. They are tied for second place with South Bend in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach 6, Daytona 2

The Palm Beach Cardinals (16-11) topped the Daytona Tortugas (CIN, 9-18) at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Cade Winquest had a solid outing with five scoreless innings. The 23-year-old struck out four and earned his second professional win. Jose Davila was touched for two runs on three hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings.

The Beach Birds got on the board as Brandon Hernandez singled home Joshua Baez in the second. Michael Currialle, R.J. Yeager and Won-Bin Cho hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to make the score 3-0.

Roy Garcia threw a scoreless 1 2/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks. Edwin Nunez pitched a scoreless ninth to lower his ERA to 0.79 through 11 1/3 innings this year.

The Tortugas made it a one-run game in the seventh but the Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom half. Curialle plated one via single. Joshua Baez singled to score Curialle and make the score 5-2. Alex Iadisernia doubled in the eighth to add one more run.

Curialle was a home run away from the cycle, walked twice and came across two times. The third baseman is slashing .405/.541/.619/1.160 in 26 games this season. Yeager recorded two hits. Palm Beach had five extra-base hits of 11 and five walks. Every player except Jose Zapata was on base at least once.

Baez took his second bag of the season. Cho stole his eighth.

The Cardinals went 5-1 against Daytona this week. They are tied for first place with Jupiter in the Florida State League East.
