Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 16, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-1 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Pete Hansen, pitched five scoreless innings and recorded his first professional win for Palm Beach. Other standouts include Andrew Suárez and Jeremy Rivas.

Memphis 5 at Gwinnett 1

The Memphis Redbirds (9-5) topped the Gwinnett Stripers (ATL, 2-11) on Saturday night at Coolray Field. It is the Redbirds’ sixth consecutive victory.

In a bullpen game covering for injured starter Tommy Parsons, James Naile tossed the first three innings. The right-hander yielded a run on three hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Andrew Suárez pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and earned his second win of 2023.

The Stripers scored in the second inning but Justin Toerner responded with a solo homer in the third, his first hit since joining the team. Memphis took the lead in the fourth when Luken Baker plated one on a single.

In the sixth, the Redbirds added three more runs. Paul DeJong, Oscar Mercado and Juniel Quesecuto each drove in a run on singles.

Kodi Whitley threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Guillermo Zuñiga recorded a scoreless ninth inning.

DeJong and Querecuto both had two hits and an RBI. Baker recorded a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. The lineup only had one extra-base hit, a double, off the bat of Masyn Winn.

Springfield at Arkansas – Postponed

Due to the inclement weather in North Little Rock, the Springfield Cardinals and Arkansas Travelers game was postponed to Sunday. It will played as part of a seven-inning twin bill.

Game 1: at Arkansas, RHP Connor Lunn (0-1, 4.50) vs. RHP Kyle Tyler (0-0, 18.00) 1:05 CT
Game 2: at Arkansas, RHP Logan Gragg (0-0, 6.75) vs. RHP Bryan Woo (0-0, 0.00) Time TBA

Peoria 3 at Wisconsin 6

The Peoria Chiefs (2-6) fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (MIL, 4-4) at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday.

Starter Austin Love threw four innings and was charged with four runs on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. TCN’s no. 24 prospect took his first loss of the season. Chris Roycroft surrendered two runs in two innings of work.

The Chiefs didn’t score until the final two innings when they were down 6-0. In the eighth, Jeremy Rivas singled to bring in Francisco Hernandez. Osvaldo Tovalin recorded an RBI double and Nathan Church brought in a run in the ninth to make the score 6-3.

Dionys Rodriguez pitched two shutout frames for Peoria. TCN’s no. 28 prospect has a 1.13 ERA in eight innings this year.

Peoria recorded eight hits and three walks but scored only had three runs. Rivas went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jimmy Crooks III walked twice.

Tovalin and Hernandez both took their first bags of the year.

Victor Scott II made two phenomenal catches in center field.

Sunday’s game: at Wisconsin, RHP Trent Baker (0-1, 11.25) vs. Tyler Woessner (1-0, 1.80) 1:10 CT

Palm Beach 3 at Daytona 2

The Palm Beach Cardinals (4-4) edged the Daytona Tortugas (CIN, 5-3) at Jackie Robinson Field on Saturday.

Pete Hansen pitched five scoreless innings on three hits and four walks. TCN’s no. 16 prospect fanned four batters and earned his first professional win.

The Beach Birds struck first when R.J. Yeager blasted a two-run shot in the fourth. TCN’s no. 21 prospect, Won-Bin Cho, tripled in the fifth to add another run and make the score 3-0.

Chandler Arnold surrendered a run in 1 1/3 innings on two hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Roy Garcia yielded a solo homer in the ninth but induced a game-ending double play. The right-hander struck out three in 2 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals recorded five hits and four walks against the Tortugas. The lineup went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Catcher Leonardo Bernal caught two runners stealing second.

Sunday’s game: at Daytona, RHP Hancel Rincon (0-1, 9.82) vs. TBA 4:00 CT
