Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 5, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-0 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis 3B Kramer Robertson, went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Other standouts include Juniel Querecuto, Masyn Winn, and Luken Baker.

Memphis 7, Nashville 5

The Memphis Redbirds beat the Nashville Sounds (MIL) by a 7-5 score on Tuesday night in the 2023 home opener at AutoZone Park. The fill-in starter was Tommy Parsons after Gordon Graceffo was scratched. Parsons pitched four innings, gave up three runs on six hits and struck out two.

James Naile threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief before Andrew Suarez surrendered two runs in two innings. Genesis Cabrera got the final out of the game. Naile received the win and Cabrera the save, both their first of 2023.

The Sounds got on the board with one run in the top of the first. Memphis responded in the home half of the inning to tie on a Masyn Winn triple followed by a Kramer Robertson RBI ground out.

Nashville retook the lead in the top of the second. In the third, home runs by Robertson and Luken Baker plated three to put the Redbirds up 4-2. It was Baker’s third home run of the young season.

The Sounds narrowed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth. That score remained until the eighth when Memphis scored three on a Robertson single, a wild pitch, and a throwing error. The Redbirds led 7-3.

A two run home run by Nashville in the ninth brought the score to 7-5 but the Sounds were unable to score further.

Robertson was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Winn was 3-for-5. Juniel Querecuto was 2-for-3. Baker drove in two.

On the base paths, Winn, Ivan Herrera, and Oscar Mercado each stole a base. In the field, Mercado made a fielding error. Chase Pinder had an outfield assist at second base.

Memphis is 2-2 on the season.

Wednesday’s game:  at Nashville, TBA (MEM) vs. RHP Caleb Boushley (0-0, 3.00) 6:45 CT.
