ParticipantJust curious about center fielders at both Memphis and Springfield.
Looks like Ben Deluzio at Memphis is the prototypical AAAA player. Drafted in the 3rd round out of Florida State in 2013. Since then, has only played in 34 major league games. But he consistently hits well. This season at Memphis he has a slash of .283/.363/.441/.804. Has 6 triples, 9 home runs, and 29 stolen bases. Hits leadoff. Must have some speed. Wonder how his defense is? Could he fill a spot in St. Louis for awhile if Carlson goes down?
At Springfield is Mike Antico. He also hits leadoff. Drafted last year by the Cards in the 8th round out of U. of Texas. Has progressed well, and was promoted this season from Peoria to Springfield after 71 games with the Chiefs. For the season he’s slashed
.259/.361/.417/.777. What’s nice is that he has an .800 OPS at Springfield. Must be another speedster. Has stolen
37 bases. Done pretty well in his 1st full season as a pro. These 2 prospects haven’t been talked about much with all the Walker and Winn chatter, but are they being overlooked?
August 24, 2022 at 2:25 pm #197430Reminder that unless DeLuzio is added to the 40-man, he can return to free agency this fall. Maybe Antico will take his spot with Memphis in 2023…
August 24, 2022 at 2:25 pm #197431Grant Black is making the spot start for Memphis tonight.
August 24, 2022 at 5:09 pm #197462Hurst is the day tô day CF in Memphis even when DeLuzio is in the lineup. His OPS this year is about the same as DeLuzio’s.
I like DeLuzio but I doubt he re-signs as a minor league FA for next year. Without him the Memphis OF for 2023 is looking like Burelson, Gomez, Hurst, Walker, and Koperniak with Antico knocking at the door. One might be in STL but Memphis also might go with only 4 OF’s.
Unless Antico drop off significantly I think he is the CF of the future.
August 24, 2022 at 8:17 pm #197485Of course after I mention that Hurst hás been getting most of the CF starts in Memphis today they have DeLuzio in CF and Hurry in LF.
August 24, 2022 at 8:53 pm #197495CC, the data doesn’t support your view of the regular Memphis CF. Here are the starts this season by position. When DeLuzio is playing, he is almost always the CF. Further, he plays more often than Hurst, 86 total starts to 58. In fact, DeLuzio has just 13 fewer starts than Burleson this season and the most in the field of any Memphis OF. (That doesn’t mean DeLuzio will be added to the 40-man, though.)
I agree with you that Antico seems to be the CF to watch.
Starts 2022 LF CF RF DH Capel 17 9 45 7 DeLuzio 1 77 0 8 Hurst 11 29 18 0 Burleson 66 0 5 28 Gomez 0 0 27 7 August 25, 2022 at 8:10 am #197532On Jim Bowden’s latest prospect ranking, Jordan Walker is the #1 prospect in baseball. He also predicts that he’ll be the 2023 ROY.
I’m not sure if it was this thread, but Brian mentioned that he thinks “we will see him sooner than many on here think”. Could he be the opening day RFer or LFer?
August 25, 2022 at 8:28 am #197540The #STLCards system was 2-2 on Wed. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield 2B Nick Dunn, was 3-for-5 with a grand slam, five RBI, a steal and four runs scored. Other standouts: Tink Hence, Chandler Redmond, Conner Capel, and Alec Burleson. https://t.co/BPPhfG8kp3 pic.twitter.com/pu7EMdjMRh

ParticipantOn Walker, sometimes it seems like the Cardinals like to give a youngster a few games at AAA at the start of the season before calling them up. Maybe a 6/23 call up?

August 25, 2022 at 9:16 am #197552BC, regarding Walker, I think it’ll be sooner than that, but probably not Game 1. Right around May 1, depending on how others are doing would be my guess. Noot, Carlson, TON, Yepez, Donovan, Burleson and Gomez(who has to be added to the 40 man or he’s gone) are all more likely at this point.
I’m most excited to see Winn replace DeJong to be honest….. that might not be until 2024 though.
Edit: I changed it from 24 to 2024 to clarify I didn’t mean Winn not being on the Cards until he’s 24 years old.
August 25, 2022 at 10:29 am #197564I predict at least one of two things will happen – maybe both. Walker will finish 2022 with Memphis and he will play in the Arizona Fall League. Remember that with the new schedules, Triple-A continues until the MLB season ends. Springfield is done on September 11.
(By the way, that is exactly how Pallante’s 2021 ended after he excelled at Springfield for most of the season.)

ParticipantForgot about the lengthened AAA season. Thanks, Brian. You’re right, he may be in St. Louis sooner than people think.
August 25, 2022 at 1:08 pm #197585Are FCL and DSL done for the year?
August 25, 2022 at 2:23 pm #197622Yes, they are. In fact, I just posted this today…
I finished the 2022 Florida Complex League season with the #STLCards' Jupiter-based rookie affiliate. My extensive news, notes and images include plans for a number of the organization's 2022-drafted pitchers plus Won-Bin Cho, Luis Piño and much more! August 26, 2022 at 12:35 pm #197733Bernal is no. 28 on our July prospect list and will move up in the August/Sept rankings. I liked what I saw at PB. His manager Gary Kendall spoke about him in the subscriber interview on the home page.
August 26, 2022 at 12:39 pm #197734
stlcard25ParticipantGood to hear. Maybe the Cards have themselves a gem. I still do like Herrera’s chances to be a starting catcher, either way.
August 26, 2022 at 12:44 pm #197737I didn’t see enough of Bernal to conclude how he fares at the plate against quality breaking pitches. But, hey, full-season ball at 18 years of age!
August 26, 2022 at 3:43 pm #197750Jack Flaherty is making a rehab start for Memphis tonight.
