Any thoughts?
It could force small market teams to miss out on the most valuable years on the players they were able to draft due to poor performance. Those fans lose twice.
On the other hand. the merit system was the crowning jewel of the Xiang dynasty, so who knows?The 29 1/2 age for free agency will never fly. Too many players will miss out on negotiations for their services during their prime years, which are usually 26-30.
Plus guys mature at different times. While it might benefit some, the service time metric is a better system.
I feel like there are flaws to using WAR as well. For example, our pitchers often get nicked by fWAR, which they propose, because it uses fielding independent statistics. Guys like Hudson and Mikolas depend less on Ks and more on letting the defense turn balls in play into outs. Which would then hurt their salary, at least in Hudson’s case.
I honestly don’t know where Manfred and his team come up with some of these ideas. WAR is a good tool in the toolbox but to use it as the sole basis for a salary? There is zero chance the MLBPA would go for that, nor are they going to go for free agency at 29 1/2.
I assume that Manfred and the owners are just throwing ideas against the wall to see if they stick because if these are their best offers it is going to be a long, cold winter.
