Matt Chamberlain’s extra-inning blast led Peoria to the St. Louis Cardinals system’s only win in four Sunday games. Other standout performances belonged to Alec Burleson, Juan Yepez, Wilfredo Pereira and Nick Plummer.

The Redbirds rallied three times, twice from substantial deficits, only to be silenced by the Sounds, 14-13. Memphis (45-51) won the home series, five games to one.
The high-scoring affair included a combined 35 hits and four errors generating nine unearned tallies. Connor Thomas lasted just two outs, charged with seven of Nashville’s (52-44) eight first-inning scores. Five of the seven runs were unearned and the lefty yielded five hits and two walks, including a solo shot.
Jesus Cruz allowed all three inherited runners to cross home plate plus one of his own before the first was over. The righty tossed a clean second, permitting three hits and a base-on-balls in all.
Down 8-0 before even coming to bat, the Redbirds chipped away, generating single scores in the initial three frames, closing the gap to 8-3. But the Sounds added fourth-inning tally off T.J. Zeuch who was in the midst of his four-inning stint. Zeuch struck out five during that span, giving up three hits and issuing two free passes.
Memphis made a big push, mounting a five-run fourth to come within one. A sixth inning run knotted the game at 9-9, with that score holding until the ninth.
Zeuch and Seth Elledge covered most of that period, the latter working around two walks for a clean seventh. Connor Jones (L, 5-5) was not scored upon the next frame but was tagged for four runs before the ninth was over.

Alec Burleson’s three-run bomb increased his day’s RBI count to six and brought his team within one in the last inning. But even with the three unearned tallies, Memphis fell just short of victory.
The Redbirds exploded for 18 hits, including eight for extra bases and all eight starters in the field had at least one. First baseman Juan Yepez could not be stopped at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four doubles, run scored and two RBI. Nolan Gorman pinch ran for Yepez in the sixth, taking over at third and going 2-for-2 and crossing home twice.

Catcher Dennis Ortega and center fielder Scott Hurst had three hits apiece, in four and six at bats, respectively. Ortega added a walk and run scored and Hurst touched home three times. Brendan Donovan sent one over the fences at AutoZone Park with the bases empty, his only hit in five at bats.
Defensively, shortstop Evan Mendoza’s throwing miscue led to six unearned runs while Donovan later committed a throwing error.
Monday’s game: Off
The S-Cards could not hold an early lead, resulting in an 11-7 defeat to Wichita (57-39) at Hammons Field. Springfield’s (35-61) fifth straight loss meant they had just a Game 1 win in the six-game set.
Nick Plummer and Chandler Redmond both went yard with the bases clean in the first for a 2-0 lead. It was the first of Plummer’s two solo shots, with the center fielder adding a triple and walk in four at bats with two runs scored and three driven in.

But starter Dalton Roach (L, 5-9) permitted six runs, three earned, on six hits and a base-on-balls over five innings. Three of the six scores were generated by one long ball.
Kyle Leahy was tagged for three tallies on three hits and a walk in his inning of work. Garrett Williams pitched two scoreless innings, issuing two free passes before Freddy Pacheco permitted two hits and two wild pitches, resulting in two ninth-inning scores.
Plummer’s three hits led Springfield’s 10-hit offense. Redmond was the only other S-Card with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-5 with the solo shot one of his two runs scored.
Defensively, the S-Cards committed three bobbles. Roach threw one away during a double steal and first baseman Redmond could not field his position cleanly one time. Left fielder David VInsky was charged with a fielding bobble.
Monday’s game: Off
Peoria 6 at Beloit 4 (12 innings)
Right fielder Matt Chamberlain’s two-run bomb propelled the Chiefs past the Snappers, 6-4, in 12 frames. The win gave Peoria (37-59) a split of their six-game series at Beloit (45-51).
Chamberlain’s bomb, his seventh of 2021 and only hit in five at bats, occurred with Todd Lott aboard after Lott began the frame at second. The blast capped a lively contest in which the Snappers’ eighth-inning tally sent the game into extras, before both squads traded 11th-inning scores.

Peoria outhit Beloit, 7-6, but committed a whopping five errors, resulting in three unearned runs. Third baseman Jordan Walker and first baseman Leandro Cedeno each had two hits. Walker as 2-for-6, crossing home twice. Cedeno launched a two-run rocket, with his bomb giving the Chiefs a 3-2 lead after six.
Wilfredo Pereira tossed a strong effort, yielding two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks over six innings. One of the two hits was a home run with the bases empty.
Fabian Blanco tossed a clean seventh, issuing a free pass before handing the ball off to Nick Trogrlic-Iverson. Making his second appearance in relief since coming off the Injured List, Trogrlic-Iverson (BS, 1) was saddled with a blown save despite the tally yielded being unearned.
Leonardo Taveras kept Beloit off the board, sending the game into extras. Enmanuel Solano (W, 4-0) retired six batters, giving up an unearned run on a hit, two walks and a hit batsman. Sean Kealey tossed a one-two-three 12th, striking out two, for his first save in affiliated ball.
Monday’s game: Off
Palm Beach (30-62) dropped a 6-4 decision to Daytona (47-49) at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, splitting the six-game set.
Starter Ludwin Jimenez (L, 0-7) retired seven batters, permitting four runs on three hits, a base-on-balls and plunked batter. With the Beach Birds up 2-0, the contest was delayed 48 minutes at the third’s midpoint. When play resumed, the righty struggled to record just one more out. All four tallies charged to him scored after the delay via the two singles, double and hit batsman.
Luis Ortiz went 2 2/3 frames, giving up a tally on two hits and a hit batsman and allowing Jimenez’ final base runner to cross home plate.
Andrew Marrero retired all six batters faced, striking out five, for the best pitching performance on the night. Nathanael Heredia was touched for a run on two hits and two walks.
The Beach Birds were held to just five hits, including solo shots by Carlos Soto and Patrick Romeri. Romeri reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks before Mike Antico pinch ran for him.
