Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 1, 2021

The St. Louis Cardinals system had only one win in five games on Saturday and that was against each other. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is DH Leonardo Bernal, whose three-run home run powered the DSL Cardinals Blue over the Cardinals Red.

Memphis 1, Gwinnett 2

The Redbirds were edged by the Stripers in a 2-1 loss at AutoZone Park on Saturday night.  Starter Johan Oviedo suffered his first loss of the season after pitching five innings and giving up two runs on five hits.  The right hander struck out four and walked three.  Tyler Webb, Grant Black, Connor Jones, and Seth Elledge each contributed a scoreless inning of relief.

In the third inning, Memphis scored its only run – the first of the contest.  The solo home run by Scott Hurst gave the Redbirds a lead that did not last long, as Gwinnett plated a pair in the fourth to take the 2-1 advantage.  Neither team scored in the final five innings.

Memphis’ offense managed only three hits and no walks. In addition to the home run by Hurst, Nolan Gorman doubled and Conner Capel singled.

Memphis is 38-39 and is in fifth place in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, 13.5 games back of first place Durham

Sunday’s game:  vs. Gwinnett, Jack Flaherty RHP (0-0, 0.00) vs. Kyle Wright RHP (3-4, 3.69) 2:05 CT.

Springfield vs. Arkansas (suspended)

Saturday’s Double-A contest at Hammons Field was suspended with the score 1-1 after a lengthy delay in the top of the fourth inning due to lightning in the area and the threat of rain.  It will be resumed on Sunday at 4:05 pm, with the regularly scheduled game, shortened to seven innings, to follow.

The Cardinals’ run was due to Springfield’s only hit to that point, Luken Baker’s long ball.

Peoria 2, Beloit 11

The Chiefs were walloped by the Beloit Snappers in an 11-2 laugher at Dozer Park on Saturday night.  The Peoria offense managed only two runs on eight hits, while the Beloit offense teed off on Chiefs pitching.

The Snappers scored three times in the second inning to take the lead, and the Chiefs responded with one run in the home half of the second on a solo home run by Todd Lott. It was the first baseman’s second blast in four games since his promotion to High-A.

In the third inning, Beloit put up another crooked number, four, to increase their lead to 7-1.  The Snappers piled on with an eighth run in the fourth.  Peoria scored its second and final run in the bottom of the fourth.  Pedro Pages led off with a single and Leandro Cedeno doubled.  Pages was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice by Chandler Redmond.  Aaron Antonini singled and Cedeno scored.

Beloit stacked on single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth to blow the score up to 11-2.

Pages and Cedeno were both 2-for-4.  Francisco Hernandez was 2-for-3. Lott and Antonini each had an RBI.

Chiefs starter Michael YaSenka gave up seven runs, four earned, on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.  The right hander struck out two, walked four, and suffered his eighth loss of the season.  Enmanuel Solano surrendered two runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Jacob Schlesener yielded two runs in the final two innings.

In the field, Lott and YaSenka made throwing errors.

Peoria is 30-47 and stand in last place in the High-A Central West Division, 21 games back of first place Quad Cities.

Palm Beach 4, Tampa 9

The Cardinals fell to the Tampa Tarpons by the score of 9-4 in a Saturday night contest at Roger Dean Stadium.  Starter John Beller lasted only two innings, as he gave up seven runs, two earned, on six hits, struck out one and walked four.  The dreadful first inning included three fielding errors made by Palm Beach defenders, leading to five unearned runs.

Beller was relieved in the third by Edgar Manzo, who tossed five scoreless innings with six punch outs and one walk.  Two new Cardinals took the ball the rest of the way, both allowing one run. Andrew Marrero went 2/3 innings and Ryan Loutos tossed the final 1 1/3. Beller took the loss, his fourth of the season.

As noted, the Beach Birds fell behind early to the tune of a 7-0 deficit going into the fourth inning when the offense scored their first runs.  Mack Chambers drew a leadoff walk.  Jacob Buchberger doubled to plate Chambers.  L.J. Jones doubled and Buchberger scored.  The Cardinals cut the lead to 7-2.

Palm Beach added a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Franklin Soto.  The Tarpons responded with eighth run in the eighth.  In the bottom of the eighth, three walks and a single led to the fourth and final run for the Cardinals.  Tampa added one more in the ninth, to bring the score to the final of 9-4.

Jones and Soto were both 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Palm Beach hitters struck out 14 times, but also drew seven walks.

On the base paths, Matt Koperniak was picked off first base.  Soto, Chambers, and Osvaldo Tovalin all made fielding errors in the first inning.

Palm Beach is 25-49 and is in last place in the Low-A Southeast East Division, 13.5 games back of first place St. Lucie.

Sunday’s games:  vs. Tampa, TBD (PB) vs. Matt Sauer RHP (2-4, 4.34) 11:00 am CT (Game 1), Game 2 follows, the makeup of the Wednesday, July 28 rainout.

FCL Cardinals 1 at FCL Marlins 2 (seven innings)

The Cardinals (12-9) were edged by the Marlins 2-1 in Jupiter on Saturday morning.  Starter Ettore Giulianelli pitched two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and fanned four.  Juan Peralta tossed one scoreless inning of relief.  Victor Villanueva surrendered two runs in two innings and was tagged with the blown save and the loss.  Ben Baird tossed a scoreless sixth.

The Cardinals scored their only run in the first inning.  Springfield rehabber Chase Pinder led off with a double and scored on a single by Hansel Otamendi.  The Marlins came back with single runs in the fourth and fifth.

The Cardinals offense had just five hits and took two walks.  Doubles by Pinder and Jeremy Rivas were the only extra base hits.

On the base paths, Otamendi was picked off first base.  In the field, catcher Roblin Heredia picked a runner off second base.

Sunday’s game:  No game scheduled.

DSL Cardinals Blue 4 at DSL Cardinals Red 1 (six innings)

The two Cardinals teams played each other on Saturday morning and the Blue prevailed 4-1 over the Red, putting both clubs at 7-7 on the season.  The game was called in the top of the sixth after one batter due to rain.

Blue scored first with one run in the first inning. Anyelo Encarnacion tripled and came home on a wild pitch.  Red tied it up in the second. Francis Reynoso and Jeremy Ramos singled, Felix Taveras walked, and Raul Guzman walked to score Reynoso.

The game remained tied 1-1 until the fifth when Blue pulled ahead on a three-run home run by Leonardo Bernal.  A rain delay occurred in the top of the sixth inning and the game was called.

The Blue scored four runs on seven hits. No Blue hitter had multiple hits.  Bernal had three RBI.

The Red scored one run on three hits.  All three hits were singles off the bats of Reynoso, Ramos, and Guzman.

Blue starter Hancel Rincon pitched four innings and gave up one run on three hits, struck out five and walked three.  Ronny Oliver tossed a scoreless fifth and got the win, his first as a professional.

On the mound for Red was Yonael Dominguez, who pitched four innings and yielded one run on five hits, fanned five and walked one.  Juan Severino started the fifth and gave up three runs without recording an out.  Augusto Calderon competed fifth with no further damage.  Severino took the loss, his first.

Blue catcher Alejandro Loaiza committed an error on a pickoff attempt.

Sunday’s game:  No game scheduled.
