9. Dylan Carlson (S) CFwell im not really liking the lineup that much. Carlson has been struggling especially in big situations and miller has been horrible when really needed, missing balls right down the middle when all he needed was simple contact. Oneil hasnt been great particularly a little iffy in the field. ILL buy edman maybe needing a break but bader has only really played one game since he was out with the migraine and he was hitting well before. But i dont make the decisions. Hopefully we will get a win but if we play defense like we have been playing and fail to do the right thing with runners on bases, it may be a long weekend.
I am glad to see Miller back at DH. He doesn’t need to put on a glove anymore unless in an emergency. I have no problem with Edman sitting. He seems a bit lost.
Personally I would play Bader everyday because of his defense and speed and strongly consider sending Carlson back to Springfield. Carlson just seems a bit over matched to me. I am sure it is temporary though.
Dylan Carlson, believe it or not, is hitting .292/.370/.500 in his last 7 games. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Sure, he’s been a bit overmatched in some key moments, but he has also come through a couple of times as well. No sense keeping him up if he’s not going to be playing.
I’m also glad that Miller is DHing. He’s been really bad in the field. Carpenter might be the best defensive choice at 3B right now, and probably is when you consider the bat. Hopefully he, Wong and Edman can all get going a bit though.
Have the Cards faced this guy before? That’s usually a bad sign for this team but maybe they’ll get it going. Haha.

Why do you consider Carlson’s performance temporary? Most of the time in the minors he hit in the .230s to the .240s. One decent stretch where he hit .281 last year. Now we think he’s the 2nd Coming.We will be lucky we get much out of Carlson. And I am talking not just this year, but for his career.

Ponce allows two walks, a single, a stolen base compounded by a throwing error by Yadi, and then a home run. This one is looking grim already. 4-0 Tribe with 1 out in the first.
Ponce may have just cost himself a rotation spot and taxed the bullpen to boot. 2/3 IP, 2H, 4 BB, 4 ER on 41 pitches (17 strikes). Jake Woodford comes in to bail him out of the inning.
Ponce just screwed over the rest of the pitching staff for the next several games. I don’t see how Ponce gets another start after this putrid performance and its not like he’s been good as the 5th starter before this.
Replay challenge question. If you watch the replay on the 3-2-8 DP Molina tagged the runner with his glove while had the ball in his throwing hand. No one noticed but what happens if Indians would have challenged the tag. Would the runner still be out at second and then it is the umpires discretion to place the leader runner at third or allow him to score?
Remember that 3-2-8 double play in the Indians/Cardinals game?

Well, not much worth commenting on tonight. Might as well put Schildt on the mound to serve up batting practice to the Indians. Wouldn’t be any worse than what’s out there now.
Though they said on the telecast that there has to be a six-run lead or more before a position player can pitch, that new rule for 2020 was rolled back in June. Now, anyone can pitch at any time, same was always was the case prior to this season.
Of course, since the Cardinals are down by 12, it doesn’t matter.
What an embarrassing beatdown. I’m glad it was blacked out for me, as this team looks pretty much lost at this point. Can’t hit and now the pitching finally hits a snag.
I have not seen a team put so many hits just inside the foul lines. Plus we have not had much pitching tonight. Ponce de Leon should not be starting ahead of any of Gomber, Woodford or Oviedo. We need our regular rotation of Flaherty, Waino, Kim, Hudson and Martinez then use the other 3, as needed. If Martinez doesn’t show much, he should also be replaced in the rotation.
I also think it is time to return to Fowler leading off. Move Wong down in the order. Fowler, DeJong, Goldschmidt, Miller, Carpenter, Molina, Wong, Carlson, Bader.

Carlson has progressed nicely through the minors for the most part. He is ranked number 1 in our system for a reason, however it is obvious that he could have used more time at AAA. I am confident he will become a steady producer, just not this year.
Shildt said after the game that “I am sure we will look at it” when asked if they will reevaluate the rotation. He also noted that by Schock pitching, is is a “good indication” that pitching help will come from Springfield tomorrow.
For the record, the Cardinals lose 14-2 to fall to 11-12 on the season.
Looking for a silver lining, at least this will only count as one loss… (checks notes…) Make that 2.7 losses… Never mind… 😉
Fortunately this season doesn’t matter much anyway. We can all just sit back and watch baseball games without worrying too much about winning or losing (not that winning still isn’t the preferred result). Half of baseball is going to make the playoffs to determine who gets the 2020 giant asterisk, so my old American Legion team would stand a chance if we weren’t all in our 70s. I find this whole season an enormous confusion – from uninspiring Cardinal hitting, pitching and fielding to non-fans and screwy new rules. So Let’s just watch the spectacle and try to enjoy it such as it is.

It does appear the Cards were scalped by those horrible Indians. You know it was bad when a pitcher earns a save in a 14-2 game. I gave it up sometime in the 6th but by then I was becoming blinded by all those little white balls flying through the air. The only thing good in that game was the 3-2-8 double play which MW says was the first in history of baseball. Then McLaughlin put some doubt on whether Yadi tagged with the ball in his hand or only an empty glove. I hope it stands as announced. My real laughs in a game like this are listening to motormouth Horton, a pitcher, describe how all those fielders should be playing as if he had a clue….lol
One more question: When will Yadi tell Shildt he wants a day off, not just an inning or two? He has caught 8 in a row and there are 5 more coming up before a day off. At times I wonder who actually runs that team when it comes to assignments Yadi or Shildt.
It was somewhat inevitable. Sure the pitching was gruesome last night, but the offense again scored 3 or fewer runs, which has happened in over 50% of this season’s games. A combination of over the hill vets and unproven youngsters. Prime examples are our third baseman and our left fielder…. .190/.346/.286/.632 and
.172/.284/.344/.628. How’s that for 2 positions that are supposed to be top producing positions in the lineup.When a team gets as thoroughly abused as our Birds did last night…..and in their own park, they better come out swinging, not only in their next game, but for the remainder of the series. Thank God that if we were going to get throttled by these guys, that it occurred in the first game of this series. If our Cards do not win the next two games of this series, I not only will be very disappointed, but it was also be a very bad sign of things to come here in 2020. And to you, Cardinal In France……what we really need to know is what you and your better half on tap for din-din on this fine Saturday evening?
