Cardinals COVID Cases Climbing

Mid-afternoon on Sunday, as the St. Louis Cardinals remained sequestered in their Milwaukee hotel, USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale was the first to deliver additional bad news, which was quickly supported by other national reporters.

Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal provides testing specifics:

As of Saturday, the Cardinals had confirmed four cases – three players and a staffer. Four others – one player and three staff members – had returned non-conclusive results. All were asymptomatic.

Mark Saxon of The Athletic reports another positive was recorded on Sunday, which if confirmed, would bring the traveling party’s possible total to nine. Saxon did not state whether the new positive came from a player or staff member.

At this point, no infected individuals have been identified by the team. They have no motivation to be in a hurry to do so by placing players on the injured list since their next rescheduled game is not until Tuesday in Detroit.

Similar to Saturday, St. Louis President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said he intends to meet with the media via Zoom from Milwaukee later on Sunday. This article will be updated at that time.

Sunday evening update

No news cannot be considered good news, as the Cardinals have decided not to make any statements on Sunday, after all.

One major open question is whether the team will provide their Monday update from Detroit as expected, or will be forced to remain in Milwaukee for an extended period. The latter would likely doom the rescheduled four-game series at the Tigers scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday.

Stay tuned!
