Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 17, 2019

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 5-4 on Friday. Our Player of the Day is Memphis’ Jake Woodford, with a stellar one hit, four walk, six scoreless inning start. Palm Beach’s Alvaro Seijas hurled five scoreless innings. DSL Cardinals Blue designated hitter Fernando Diaz went 3-for-4 including two doubles and an RBI.

Memphis 8, Iowa 2

The Redbirds blew past the Iowa Cubs 8-2 on Friday at AutoZone Park.  Memphis starter Jake Woodford pitched six innings of one hit ball against the first place Cubs.  Woodford struck out seven and walked four.  Seth Elledge surrendered the two Cubs runs in two innings of relief.   Jesus Cruz pitched a scoreless ninth.  Woodford earned his eighth win of the season.

Andrew Knizner blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning.  Justin Williams was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Dylan Carlson and Jose Martinez were each 2-for-4 and Martinez had an RBI.  Harrison Bader went 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Bader was hit in the head with a pitch in the sixth inning but remained in the game to score a run.  Bader was removed at the end of the sixth and replaced by Adolis Garcia.

Carlson was caught stealing second base.  Edmundo Sosa made a fielding error.

Memphis is 57-66 on the season and is in second place in the PCL American North, nine games behind the Iowa Cubs.

Springfield 5, Arkansas 2

Angel Rondon (Palm Beach Cardinals)

The Cardinals beat the Arkansas Travelers 5-2 at Hammons Field on Friday, as all five Springfield runs came via the long ball.  Johan Mieses blasted a two-run home run in the first inning.  In the second, Elehuris Montero thumped a solo shot to center field.  Rayder Ascanio smacked a two-run home run to left field in the third inning.  Yariel Gonzalez doubled for the only other extra base hit.  No Cardinal had more than one hit.

Starter Angel Rondon pitched seven innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  The right hander fanned seven and issued one free pass to earn his fifth win of the season.  Merandy Gonzalez and Connor Jones each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Kramer Robertson swiped his eighth base with Springfield.

The Cardinals are 25-29 in the second half, 55-69 overall, and are five games back of Arkansas and Tulsa, the teams tied for first place in the Texas League North.

Palm Beach 6 at Daytona 2

Alvaro Seijas (St. Louis Cardinals)

Palm Beach defeated the Daytona Tortugas at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday by the score of 6-2.  Alvaro Seijas pitched five scoreless innings in a performance of threes, allowing three hits, striking out three and walking three to earn his third win of the season.  Lefty reliever Zack Thompson surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings.  Leonardo Taveras tossed 1/3 scoreless innings.  Ramon Santos allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings, before Cole Aker pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Cardinals offense put up six runs on 10 hits.  Scott Hurst was 2-for-5 with two RBI on two singles.  Nick Plummer, Cole Kreuter and Nolan Gorman each doubled, with Plummer’s and Kreuter’s doubles driving in runs.  Ivan Herrera was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Nick Dunn was 2-for-5.

Thompson picked a runner off first base and Herrera had his third passed ball of the season.

The Cardinals are 19-36 in the second half, 54-65 overall, and are in last place in the FSL South.

Peoria 3 at Kane County 4

Connor Thomas (State College Spikes)

The Chiefs fell to the Kane County Cougars in a one-run contest on Friday.  The Peoria offense had seven hits, all singles, with all three scores coming in the third inning.  None of the runs were the result of any of the seven hits.  The first run came home on a fielder’s choice by Imeldo Diaz.  A sac fly off the bat of Carlos Soto plated another, while the third and final run of the inning occurred on a steal of home by Delvin Perez.

Diaz, Brandon Riley, and Josh Shaw had two hits each.

Starter Michael Brettell pitched five innings and gave up four runs on eight hits.  The right hander struck out four and walked one.  Left hander Connor Thomas tossed two scoreless innings of relief.  Evan Sisk pitched a scoreless eighth.  Brettell took the loss, his ninth of the season.

Perez stole home for his 19th stolen base of the season.  Wadye Ynfante and Shaw were both caught stealing.  Perez made a fielding error and Edwin Figuera had a throwing error.  Catcher Alexis Wilson picked a runner off third base.

The Chiefs are 16-37 in the second half, 46-76 overall, and are in last place in the Midwest League West

State College 3, Mahoning Valley 10

The Spikes were overmatched by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at home on Friday.  Catcher Matt Duce was the only Spikes hitter with multiple hits, going 2-for-5.  Brylie Ware had the only extra base hit, a double that drove in the first of three runs for State College.  A force out off the bat of Terry Fuller, along with a throwing error brought two meaningless runs home in the ninth.

Starter Michael YaSenka pitched the first two innings and gave up two runs on one hit while striking out two and walking three.   Cameron Dulle followed with 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.  Connor Lunn surrendered one unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.  Jack Ralston allowed three runs, two earned in his 1 1/3 innings pitched.  Erick Lex was pitching when four unearned runs scored in the ninth.  YaSenka took the loss.

In the field, Duce made a throwing error, and Luis Flores made a fielding error.  David Vinsky had an outfield assist at third base.

The Spikes are 30-30 and are in third place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Johnson City 0 at Burlington 1

The Cardinal were blanked 1-0 by the Burlington Royals on Friday.  The Johnson City offense scattered five hits with the only extra base hit a double by Jhon Torres.  No Cardinal had multiple hits.

Starter Hector Soto pitched four innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits.  The right hander fanned seven and walked one and was the losing pitcher.  Francisco Justo tossed three scoreless innings of relief.  Tyler Peck added a scoreless eighth.

Trejyn Fletcher stole his seventh base, and Mateo Gil was picked off first base.  Kyle Skeels and Malcom Nunez each committed a throwing error.

Johnson City is 28-27 on the season and remains in first place in the Appalachian League West.

Saturday’s game:  at Burlington, Luis Ortiz (0-3, 9.87) 5:30 CT.


GCL Cardinals 4 at GCL Astros 5

The Cardinals were edged by the Astros 5-4 at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Friday. The Cardinals offense scored four runs on seven hits, with third sacker Fernando Hernandez going 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double.  Catcher Cristhian Longa also drove in a run and was 2-for-4.  Diowill Burgos hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.  Right fielder Patrick Romeri tripled.

Rehabbing starter Williams Perez pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed no hits, struck out three and walked two.  Roy Garcia tossed the next three innings and surrendered five runs on seven hits to take the loss.  Tyler Statler pitched a scoreless sixth, and Francis Ventura hurled the final two scoreless innings.

Perez made a throwing error.

The Cardinals are 19-25 on the season and are in last place in the GCL East.

DSL Cardinals Red 6 at DSL Cubs2 2

The Cardinals Red blew past the Cubs2 on Friday, after taking the early 4-0 lead and never relinquishing it.  Smith Vargas, Sander Mora, and Miguel Marcos had six of the team’s 10 hits.  Vargas was 2-for-4, Mora was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Marcos was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Luis Andujar and Fernando Brazaban also drove in runs.

Starter Henry Gomez pitched five scoreless innings, allowed four hits, fanned four and walked two to earn his first win.  Oliver Lopez surrendered one run in two innings of relief.  Larimel Soriano also pitched two innings and allowed one run.

Marcos, Vargas, and Mora each stole a base.  Bryan Matute made a fielding error.

The Cardinals Red are 27-38 and are in seventh place in the DSL San Pedro Division.

DSL Cardinals Blue 6, DSL Angels 5

The Cardinals Blue edged the Angels by the score of 6-5 on Friday.  The offense scored six runs on two sac flies, a double, a single, and a wild pitch.  The Blue had eight hits total. Fernando Diaz doubled twice for the only extra base hits and was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Gustavo A. Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Starter Wilmer Ortega pitched three innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits.  The right-hander struck out three and walked one.  Dionys Rodriguez tossed three scoreless innings of relief.  Cristoffer Zapata pitched two scoreless innings and earned the win, his second.  Nelson Prada hurled a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

On the base paths, Carlos Arcia stole sixth base of the season.  Darlyn Del Villar swiped his ninth, and Darlin Moquete stole his 19th bag.  Luis Rodriguez was picked off and caught stealing.  In the field, Jose Zapata made a throwing error, and Elvin De Jesus committed a fielding miscue.

The Cardinals Blue have a record of 39-17 and are in first place in the DSL South.
