Yadier Molina spends months each year coming up to the plate and cranking out hits. In 2012, the St. Louis Cardinals catcher collected 159 on his way to a .315 batting average, both career bests.
Now, the 30-year-old hopes to extend his hit-making skills into the music business.
Back home in Puerto Rico for the World Baseball Classic, the backstop announced Molina Records’ first launch, an upcoming disc from Venezuelan rapper Oma 206.
Molina says he started his label last year due to his love of music, particularly reggaeton, salsa and vallenato. In Puerto Rico, he has built a recording studio, which is now operational.
“For me this is a hobby. For some people it’s golf, but for me it’s music. I really believe I’ll do some great things,” Molina told news agency EFE on Friday.
Last spring, when Molina came to terms with the Cardinals on a five-year, $75 million contract, the five-time Gold Glove Award winner became wealthy on an entirely new level.
As previously reported, Molina purchased a $7.15 million home near the Cardinals’ Florida base in Jupiter last August and established a charity, Fundacion 4.
Now as a budding music mogul, Molina could hit up his baseball bosses for some tips in operating his newest endeavor. The wife of Cardinals team president Bill DeWitt III, Ira, runs her own urban music label, Notifi Records.
