The Single-A short-season affiliate State College Spikes finished the fifth week of play with a 2-4 record, tying for fourth in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division standings with an overall record of 13-21. They currently sit eight games out of first place. Edwin Figuera led the way for the Spikes this week at the plate.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-5 on Friday. Our Player of the Day is DSL Blue center fielder Carlos Soler, who went 4-for-6 with two RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Quality starts were made by Chris Ellis (Memphis), Evan Kruzcynzki (Palm Beach), John Oviedo (Peoria), Jim Voyles (State College) and Jose Moreno (DSL Red), yet only two of the five clubs had enough offense to win.
Player of the Day Elehuris Montero’s two home runs gave Peoria one of the St. Louis Cardinals system’s six victories on a busy 10-game Thursday schedule. Palm Beach won behind Andy Young’s long ball while Kevin Woodall and Donivan Williams went yard in Johnson City’s victory. Andrew Warner’s blast was crucial to the GCL Cards’ win, the DSL Cardinals Blue also won and Memphis split a pair behind another excellent effort by Dakota Hudson.
St. Louis’ Triple-A affiliate won three of four in Omaha and three of four at home over Iowa, going 5-2 on the week and extending their division lead to 14 games. PCL Pitcher of the Week Daniel Poncedeleon has a 20-inning scoreless streak while lowering his season ERA to 2.15, second in the league.
