Indeed, Sosa is having a good season so far. He was solid in ’18, and if the glove is as good as advertised, he could be the guy if they need a SS for a stint (hopefully not, as Dejong has been great!)
I would think that Edman would be a near lock for 2020 unless he really tails off. He performed in camp, so far this year at AAA, and his switch hitting and capability to play 3B-SS-2B adequately would be very valuable to a team looking for versatility. In fact, Robinson might need to look over his shoulder at Edman by late summer if he doesn’t get his act together.
Here’s some weirdness with pitching stats…the Cards’ OPS+ against by spot in the batting order:
1st-103
2nd-197 (thanks, Y*)
3rd-137
4th-86
5th-64
6th-122
7th-49
8th-14
9th-111Now, which of those numbers stick out? Obviously, Milwaukee’s #2 hitter has killed us. The team has done an OK job against the back half of the lineup, with #8 and #9 standing out.
sOPS+ measures performance compared to the rest of the league. In this metric, 8 hole hitters have a measly 29 sOPS+, which is very good (71% better than league average against 8 hitters) Yet, 9th hitters have an sOPS+ of 192, a whopping 92% better than league average. For some context, the #2 is adjusted to 190 when taken in step with the league as a whole. So in essence, the position primarily staffed by pitchers has hit like Christian Y* and friends against Cardinal pitching, at least relative to how they hit against the rest of the league.
So if it seems like our staff has been putrid tossing against opposing hurlers…it has been. I’m not even sure historically how it would fit in context, but you would think it has to change at some point. Just awful.
Given Woodford’s youth, I would imagine the Cards will keep him in the minors for the year. Ponce and Gomber make for much easier call ups thanks to their 40 man status.
I really hope the Cards deal the Brewers some payback for the rude treatment in Milwaukee so far. A Cards sweep with Yelich going 0-14 with 7 Ks would be a nice turn.
Now Lagares represents the tying run as Hicks tries to get out of it. A big miss with the slider, fouled off heater and nasty slider makes it 1-2…foul…104 on the corner away for the looking K!! Cards win!
Hicks is pumped up…104 and 103. But both were well off the plate. Now 3-0. Now he fights back to 3-2…Alonso knocks it into left center.
Grounder that Wong snares and throws on for the 2nd out. One to go!
Nice K to start the 9th for Hicks. Two to go.
The Cards’ HR/Fly Ball rate must be through the roof. It’s to the point where every time a ball is hit in the air, I expect it to be a homer.
Alonso crushed a 115 mph rocket off Hudson to get the scoring started.
I don’t know if the Cards messed with Hudson’s approach or what, but he looks like anything but an MLB starter right now. He might need a Reyes stint in Memphis to get right and come back with his sinker working.
He is risen indeed!!
Happy Easter, folks!
I noticed that the milb app on my tablet (Nougat updated) wouldn’t work so even though I’ve given thought to subscribing before, I’m glad I didn’t. My phone is able to use it but I notice that even Gameday is sent to Chrome now, which an annoying extra step.
I just watched the condensed game. That was pretty enjoyable. Now if we could just get 6+ innings from the starter a few turns through the rotation, that would be great!
Looking at the schedule, ours stinks but the Mets’ early slate is also poor. Tomorrow will be their 16th road game to a measly 5 home contests. Who on earth set this docket up this year? Horrible

Excellent stuff! Thanks for sharing, Brian, and for the good work, Derek! Lopez could be a real sleeper if he keeps being patient with that kind of pop.
A new pitcher that the Cards have never faced…what could possibly go wrong?? Haha!
I’ll be getting ready for and going to an early Easter dinner, so I won’t catch any of this one. Hopefully the Cards can even the series.
I watched about 3 minutes of this one as they failed to get the tying run in during the 8th, and that was 3 minutes too much.
If they can’t beat the guy with the 14 ERA, how will they beat either of the next two? I’m afraid I fully expect this to be a home sweep.
April 19, 2019 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #88002I don’t see Madbum costing anywhere near that cost for a half year. Montero or Carlson and a B prospect would be an overpay, but probably gets it done. Maybe something like Woodford and a couple lotto tickets for a less painful trade.
Looks like Vargas is the starter tonight, per MLB.com? It’s gonna be really important to get the series moving on the right foot now.
DeGrom and Syndergaard create imposing bookends in this three game series. Here’s hoping the Cards can get to one or the other and secure a series win. Vargas in the middle seems ripe for a victory.
Herrera is off to a pretty good start with a .290/.389/.645 line, good for a 193 wRC+. Should be fun to watch him battle at Peoria as an 18 year old, as he’s right in the conversation with Gorman as a phenom in his own right.
Nice finish by Hicks there. And is there a better double play duo than Wong and Dejong? I think not.
Glad they were able to salvage one game this series.
Geez, Brewers pitchers are killing us this year…at the plate.
On a side note, Montero has impressed me despite his early numbers. The ball sounds “different” off his bat.
That is a good sign, Derek. I’m looking forward to seeing him once he catches up to the league a bit.
card25, I was right there with you regarding the rotation but I thought the problems will rear up in the summer months
Right. The hope I had was that Flaherty would be able to take a step forward in regard to keeping the ball in the yard (doesn’t seem possible), Wacha would pitch like early 2018 Wacha (walk wise, yes, but not results), and that Mikolas could be a low 3s ERA guy who walked almost no one, similar to last year but with some regression (nuh uh). Even if Carlos can come back and be the guy he was in 2016-17, that still only makes this an average group. It’s not good.
