Whew, after the Bader whiff on the tailing liner by Almora, Mikolas settles in and gets Bote to fly out. He was pretty solid tonight; we could use more starts like that from Miles.
And that will do it for my PBP for the night. I think I’ll just kick back and watch the rest of this with you all. On a scale of 1-10, anyone care to give me a PBP grade after my 2 week abstentia?
9. Better than the FSMW crew, I’d say. Only a tiny touch of rust to knock off but you were back in full swing by the 3rd or 4th inning.
Quite the barn burner so far tonight. May end up a 1 run game. Can the Cards finally win one this month??
I think the Cards get to Darvish tonight…7-2 Redbirds. Knizver with the dagger, a pinch hit two run double in the 8th.
That tragedy certainly hurt but I would say the arrival of Epstein to Chicago marked the time of our demise. We really have never responded.
To quote an underrated movie, rest assured, the ravages of old age will deal with the bear(s) far more cruelly than we ever could.
Chicago’s time on top is almost up, IMO. Theo is great when he has unlimited money to spend, but historically he leaves ashes behind. Not saying this as a manner of defending the FO, per se, but you will soon see them start a big slide, IMO.
A nice win to close the series. Now let’s finish May on a win streak!!
Trouble is brewing in the 8th…the Phils scored one on a Harper single and now have runners at the corners with no one out. Hoskins is at the plate as the tying run.
Carp gets a break on the check swing call and then hits a homer. 5-1 Cards.
A rare stroke of luck there as the intentional walk looks genius and the liner goes right to Dejong who tags Harper for the inning ending double play. 2-1 after 6.
Isn’t it suspicious that Pugs stops doing play by play, and the team goes into a tailspin?? Hmm… 😉
I like Yadi but Knizner projects to be a much better hitter. If Yadi gets an extension he should ride the bench as a backup/mentor to Knizner and the other young catchers.
I’d like to see more of a platoon next year and see where it goes. At least get Knizner 50 starts and a handful at 1B and see where he sits. He seems like a good bet to hit .300 and that’s not a bad thing to have.
It’s an interesting matchup from the standpoint that each of the three games seems to feature similar pitching matchups…Game 1, the scuffling vet with the big contract…Game 2, the big acquisition vs the young gun, and Game 3 the aging once Ace who’s trying to hold onto time for a bit longer. St Louis is in a place where emotions are nearing the boiling point and they can’t afford a home series loss against the hated Cubs or things may get really bad.
It’s currently raining here, although I’m a ways from Philly. Looks like some storms in southern PA, although they may or may not impact the game.
We need to find some way to get a win here.
IMO, Cabrera definitely showed enough to get another start, despite some impatient fans already calling for his demotion. His fastball was very good as was his change up, with the latter the most important improvement. That spot’s next turn should be Tuesday at home vs. the Reds (if they don’t skip over the spot due to open days).
I agree. I’m curious what was the motion that made his fastball so effective. A couple of his Ks were on pitches at eye level, and the batters just looked sily. His curve looked solid and the change was viable. I’d like to see some more.
You can always spot a Bob Reed report as it’s chock full of stats and goodies. Nice write-up. Glad to see Torres starting to get some traction.
I feel bad for him actually. What was once such a promising career seems to be imploding in front of our eyes right now, similar to Matt Harvey. It is sad but hey this is a business.
Same here. Especially with how good he was until the oblique injury last year. He seemed to have turned a corner, and then boom…that’s it. I think you almost have to DFA him at this point.
Sit the veterans. Make them watch munoz and gyorko and wieters play. Send Any of them you can to AAA and bring up any kid.
As a Duke basketball fan, I’ve seen Coach K do this a number of times and it rarely doesn’t work. Then again, those are college kids and these are grown MLB players…but still, a bit of rowdiness and a very clear message that we will not accept half hearted play like this would go a long ways. This team has enough talent to not be this awful, mediocre starting pitching or not.
This team appears to be mentally shot. I’m not sure how the season can be salvaged, but it has to be soon or they may be well out of it before the All Star break.
An excellent 2nd inning for Cabrera…11 pitches, 9 strikes…3 Ks.
Two runs score thanks to the blunder but Cabrera gets two Ks on 97 mph fastballs in his first inning.
Now Dexter drops a pop up and it’s bases loaded with one out. That is demoralizing for a young pitcher to have to get extra outs like that.
He comes back and gets the K for his first big league strikeout.
Nice to see Cabrera get squeezed in his first batter already. Two strikes were called balls.
To each his own but its plain lunacy to keep trotting out the same bunch of fading veterans daily and hoping for the fountain of youth revival.
BW,
You and I agree on everyone but Carpenter. I’ve advocated for a pretty good turnover. Carp just isn’t tradeable at this point, IMO. I really don’t think the drop-off in most other cases is that far.
Personally I would rather see a struggling bunch of AAA guys with something to prove
Well, you would certainly enjoy it a lot because Schrock and Sosa are not MLB players in any way. They haven’t proven otherwise in their minors time.
If the money is all the same (and it would be), what are the chances that either of them are equivalent to Carpenter? Maybe 1 in 50 or 1 in 100? It seems like it would just be a player dump, and Tommy Pham Mr. Carpenter ain’t. 😁
