It is a little hard to listen to the announcers excuse Bader’s performance. Bader has 1,024 plate appearances at the Major League level coming into tonight’s game. Time is running out for Harrison. It took the Front Office about 1,300 plate appearances to determine to move away from Rasmus, Grichuk and Piscotty.

Why? He’s been average with the bat this year and remains an elite defender. None of those other guys did anything elite and they all had multiple poor tools. Bader isn’t worth throwing away unless he’s about 20% below average with the bat, IMO.

I can’t watch (blackout)…why did Hudson come out of the game?

So far, the offense has picked up right where it left off in Milwaukee.

I will say that despite the not great stats, O’Neill was the secondary star of game 1 yesterday. The HR, sac fly and nice catch at the wall were big. Without him, we may have gotten swept.

If the DH had been in the NL then, he may have had a shot to stick. Of course, with Jose Martinez around, he probably would have been traded anyway. I’m happy that Luke has played so well for the Yankees, and Gallegos for us.

No sir. I’ll leave that to the professional. Lol

In the possibility that only one win would matter and they win Game 1 of the DH, then I would hope they would not even play Game 2. But this is probably not a high odds scenario. Then StL would have 59 games against 60 for the others and a Game 2 loss could put them them back in a tie with another contender, for example.

With an even number of games, the Cards would need to play games 59 & 60 only if they were 1 game behind, tied or 1 game ahead.

If the Cards were 1 game behind, they could skip game 2 with a loss. If they won game 1, they’d need to win game 2 to the.

If the Cards were tied, they would have to play game 2 no matter if they won or lost game 1.

If the Cards were a game ahead, they could skip game 2 with a win in game 1. If they lost game 1, they’d need to win game 2 to avoid the tie.

So I suppose it’s a 2/3 chance they’d need to play game 2 even with a win, and 1/3 they could just skip it. I’d rather see them get the days off.

Of course, that’s just if seeding is not at stake.

I’m a small playoffs person, but understand that money talks. While I understand the theory that anyone can get hot for a month, the best teams still generally separate out over the playoffs. Winning 4 series in a row is tough and the scrub team that sneaks in isn’t likely to hold up over that haul. Now, the thing that definitely will happen is that some of the really good teams will lose first round series, which is somewhat unavoidable. Your 105 win Dodgers lose in a 3 game set to the 78 win Marlins, that sort of thing.

I’ll note that if the owners are set to make more money on expanded playoffs and mediocrity bonus salary suppression, I want the DH, bigger rosters and scheduled 7 inning doubleheaders for every team.

Hopefully if they have to play the last 2 games it would just be a bit of a formality. Preferably, they could play the starters in game 1, then empty the bench for game 2. If they lose 28-0, so be it.

5 with the Pirates and 3 with the Royals. This is the make or break part of the season. Under normal circumstances, you would expect the Cards to go 6-2 or 5-3 at worst. But this team looks very tired. Not sure what can be done, but they need to snap out of it with the Reds suddenly getting hot. Like I said before, 2nd in the central or the #1 Wild Card is the ticket.

Bader’s 105 wRC+ is roughly equivalent to each of Ozuna’s two years in St Louis (107 and 109). He’s not much of a problem. O’Neill is. His .208 BABIP is still unsustainably low, but we’re close enough to season’s end that results are needed. No one in the OF is getting it done, and the infield has begun to cool off as well.

The Cards have scored 2, 0, 3, 1 and now 0 runs in Oviedo’s five starts. Talk about no support at all.

Oviedo with a bad first and last inning, but he ate some innings and saved the bullpen in the middle. With the putrid offense, he wasn’t going to win no matter what but he did ok for his first start back.

Man, Luke Voit. There’s a guy the Cardinals missed on. You wonder what the coaches did not see in him.

I’m pretty sure that someone here (bccran maybe?) was on the Luke Voit train. I think the trade for Gallegos was a good one for both teams.

Oviedo clearly was not fully ready to come back. He just about took Hiura’s head off.

Here we go with this gigantic zone again. These umps need to be sent home after this series. That was clearly a call after the catcher whined about the call he didn’t get.

Now Goldy looks like a single A hitter too. This guy is a lefty Kyle Hendricks.

Dejong looked awful that at bat. Let the good pitches go and swung at the junk balls. It’s like the Cards think they can get the 4 run homer with one man on base.

Heck of a play by Paul Dejong there.

Our lineup feels like it has multiple automatic outs this year no matter what lineup you throw out there. We really miss Dexter Fowler and having some semblance of Matt Carpenter show up.

28 pitches in the first for Oviedo and he trails 4-0. Gonna have to outslug the Brewers in this one, looks like.

Wieters looks like a high school catcher back there. Knizner can’t possibly be worse with the glove or the bat, can he?

Miller at 3B. I guess they must not like Oviedo very much.
