Some of the promotions look a little agressive. Montero will probably be at Sprngfield if not at he beginning of the season then by mid-season. No way Baker is at Peoria next year. At least at Palm Beach if not Springfield.

As they say we are now in control of our own destiny. We no longer need help from others. We just have to continue winning to make it.

It would probably wise for Greer to go back to hitting coordinator. We have more promising young hitters than I can remember and they need someone like Greer to fine tune them. Nunez, Montero, Gorman, Cedeno, de los Santos, Torres, Herrera, Soler, Mendoza, Y Gonzalez, Machado, Woodall, Baker, Carlson and others.

Brian when you were in Peoria did anyone discuss Ascanio? I have watched/listened to a number of their games on the net and have heard a number of opposing broadcasters give him high marks for his defense.

Also did Swauger have any insight as to why Yepez flamed out so badly at Palm Beach?

Looks like a good list. A little suprised to see Poncedeleon that low. Is it age or do you see him maxing out as a bullpen setup guy. And I am not expecting him to be as good as his 7 inning no-hitter. His command was probably at a career best level that night.

Did your trip change your perceptions at all?

Is Edmond the second coming of David Eckstein?

Also home run by Luken Baker. Palm Beach wins 2-0 behind another great performance by Fagalde. Four hits, one walk and 8 K’s in 6 shutout innings.

State College a 9-3 win as Toerner with 3 hits and 2 by Espinal as both are pushing .300. Espinal a homer.

He usually batted around 3rd at Springfield. Tommy Edmon is their leadoff hitter. Thomas played center field most of the time. 83 of 93 starts. He is an excellent defensive center fielder.

Regarding Ankiel, I saw him pitch a game when he dropped down to Johnson City in an attempt to come back as a pitcher. His curveball was so good that the kids down there couldn’t come within a foot of it but he just could not throw a fast ball for a strike.

Nolan Gorman’s first Midwest League hit was a 3 run homer. This after an 0-6 start with 5 strikeouts and two walks. The other out was a line drive to center field where he was robbed by an excellent play. The Kane County video broadcast is very poor. Glad when they get to a better site.

Ponce is probably the only bullpen guy not available tomorrow night. Shildt is clearly not allowing a struggling pitcher hang on hoping to qualify for a win. And I don’t recall a game where he had run out of relief pitchers.

I have been a supporter of Shildt since watching his Johnson City teams play. Small sample but I really liked the way the team went about playing. Also I have been impressed about his insights in interviews with him. So far he seems to be getting quite a bit of support.

Different from the haters who railed about Matheny from day 1. Not even a 100 win season could soften the attitudes. Hope Shildt doesn’t have to go through something like that.

Griffin Roberts in his second outing. Good today, not in his first one. 2 IP, 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BB and 4 K’s today.

I was never anti-Matheny but I agree the team attitude seems to be much better with him gone. Part of that may be due to Shildt who I have always liked. But Shildt has to prove that he can handle the load at the major league level.

It is clear to me that the Cardinals are totally dedicated to build from within. The Pirates gave up a pair of good players with upside to get Archer. The Brewers went big to get Schoop and Mous and the Cubs picked up Hammels and a pair of solid relief pitchers. Those are solid pickups to help in a pennant run. We picked up a guy that was about fifth option in the Yankees bullpen and a passel of minor league players.

I am glad that we cleared some of the logjam that was blocking out minor league guys. I am looking forward to O’Niel and Bader in the outfield. Who will replace Fowler while he is on the DL? Do we bring up someone or do we use Munoz as the 4th outfielder since Wong will be activated. But someday I wish Mo would give up some of his precious minor league prospects for an impact player. He did for Ozuna but that has at best mixed results this season.

I hope we go all out for Arenado in 2020. That is the kind of impact player who can make a big difference on both offense and defense. Even better a trade for him in 2019 along with a long term contract.

I also think clubhouse chemistry is at times overrated. I am a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. Our womens basketball team is a consistent participant in the NCAA tournament. They have amazing team closeness and chemistry but they are plagued by inconsistency and many feel that they underachieve. Their coach, Sherri Coale has often claimed that they lack leadership among the team’s leading players. Several players have failed to improve much if at all during their time with the team.

I have often wondered whether all of that koombya has dampened the tendency for key players to demand that other team members step up for the benefit of the team. As if no one dares to call others to task.

Coach Coale did a fantastic job of turning the program around at OU but the team has been absent from the top tier for a number of years. They do a ton of community service and travel overseas to aid less fortunate people such as victims of the Hatii disaster. She is a brilliant person, appears to do a great job of building character and seems to be a credit to the univesity. But fans are becoming more and more restless as Texas and Baylor have moved past them to elite status.

Where were you Pugs. Very little but complaints and little coverage of a great game where most of our young guys shined.

I watch Memphis almost every night and it appears to me that O’Neill is just a tad behind Mercado who is elite. Garcia also. Now they have added Lane Thomas who made several great plays last night. Stubby has it really good. He can play almost anyone in the outfield and have a good defensive outfield. Sometimes I think he just throws 8 balls out with position and batting order and whoever gets there first gets to start in the position and batting order the ball says.

Last night Schrock batting cleanup and Baron batting ahead of Soto.

We have been trading major league players for minor leaguers but I still don’t see us as sellers until we trade a player like Carp or Ozuna or Wacha or Martinez. It is more like addition by subtraction; Hoping that Hudson, Gomber or Ponce contributes more than Tui or O’Neil, Mercado or Bader produces more than Pham. Since we haven’t picked up a key starting player yet I don’t see us as a buyer as well.

Who is responsible for scouting the players in the minors that we have been picking up? Is the major league scouting organization or the draft scouting group or are they the same?

I would withhold judgment on the trades until I have some feel for the skill of the scouts. Still a 22 year old who has played in the majors is intriguing regardless of his ranking by the Rays organization.

I’m not sure that we will be buyers or sellers. It looks like we are making changes to play better and have not dealt away anyone significant yet. One publication I read said we were the least interesting of all the 30 major league teams in their expectations for the trading deadline.

To Yankees for two pitchers. I believe one is Gallegos who has pitched for the Yankees a little the last two years. Announced by Steve Selby.

I agree that Nunez needs to move up. Still can’t believe that we signed him for only 300,000. Wonder if he has a visa problem.

Adolis Garcia 3 HR and 8 RBI tonight vs Salt Lake in a 12-3 win.

You don’t hear much about him in terms of top prospects and his ranking has plummeted in most quarters.

    May have to reconsider

On June 1 he was hitting.204 with 4 HR and 13 RBI

As of tonight he is hitting .260 with 17 HR and 55 RBI

The last 10 games he has hit .410 with 5 home runs and 13 RBI

The guy has a lot of tools; very fast, good defender who can play all three outfield positions and has a very strong arm. He previously hit well enough with modest power. But he went into a horrific slump after a pretty good start.

To my untrained eye he seems to have changed what formerly was a flat swing to more of an uppercut. If so that could explain his early season problems as he adjusted. He has always had excellect exit velocity but not a lot of home runs. That could also explain his uptick in homers this season.

O’Neil was better the second time around. We have a rare commodity in his power. Deserves a lot of patience. Bonus is that he is a good defensive player.

68 runs on 75 hits tonight as the system went 5-2. Six homers at both Memphis and Springfield.

Homers by Woodall and Cedeno for Johnson City in a 93 win. JC getting some pitching lately. Gorman returned to the line up and went 1-4 with a walk and 3 K’s (ouch).

    Two homers by O’Neil (24 & 25), Ravelo, Lane Thomas (20 & 21) and Young.
