Why would we want Grichuk there when all he does is strikeout?

And anybody that thinks Giancarlo Gyorko is the answer to our cleanup slot is crazy. I’ve said all along he will end up about his norm, around .250 with 20 homers. He is trending that way right now.

One glaring weakness, as a lot of posters have said, is that we need a big bat in the lineup. That’s why we should go after Giancarlo Stanton hammer and tong. We’ve got enough young players with high ceilings that we should be able to land Stanton. Assuming, of course, the new Miami ownership is willing to deal. We’ve got enough young outfielders – Piscotty, Grichuk, Pham, Fowler, Martinez, Bader, Sierra – and enough young pitchers – Weaver, Flaherty, and the others – that gives us enough depth if we have to part ways with some to land Stanton.

The one untouchable is, of course, Alex Reyes.

Well, we at least got a break up in Wrigley tonight. Cubs lose to the D’Backs 10-8 in a back and forth game. D’Backs got two in the top of the 9th to win it.

We stay 4.5 games behind. They have Washington this weekend and we have Cincinnati. If there’s ever a time for a sweep by the Redbirds this is it.

Then again, we might be lucky we score a grand total of 4-5 runs the entire weekend…….

Man does this team have problems. Nobody can hit, nobody can pitch, cant score any runs, too many strikeouts. The problem is that almost everybody is having a down year. I guess it happens. But I don’t see anything to make me believe, based on past history, that things will be a little better next year.

There needs to be some major changes made. Grichuk is hopeless and at this point I assume they should probably just give up on him.

Hard for me to fathom that somebody thinks that the newly acquired O’Neill might be the big bat in our lineup. You cant be serious, whoever wrote that???

We need to go after Stanton in the off-season, hammer and tong. Stick him in the cleanup spot and our lineup takes on a whole new look. And since Martinez is obviously NOT the ace we are looking for we need to find one. With our glut of players who have the so-called “High Ceiling” we should have a number of players to part with and do what it takes to get what we need.

    QUESTION:

I had a date tonight with a goddess so I missed the first 6-7 innings. I saw a brief replay of Wong being thrown out at the plate. It was clear, from what I saw, that the catcher was pretty much sitting in front of the plate, blocking it, not giving a lane. Did the Cardinals argue or challenge the play?

I also sort of wondered why Wong didn’t just run him over.

Well, Giancarlo Stanton, of course. We are going to acquire him during the off season once Miami’s new owners make it clear they want to cut payroll. Piscotty, Weaver, and Grichuk to Miami for Stanton. That’s the plan according to the Rat

Another example of Carlos Martinez not living up to his hype, billing, whatever you want to call it. The word Ace does not apply to him in any way, shape or form. One of the biggest games of the year and he’s walked five and given up three earned runs early.

Whether anybody wants to admit it or not, Martinez simply cannot be counted on and is, at best, a #2 starter. We need an Ace right after we sign a big bat.

If we are going to get anything out of Piscotty this season now is the time. Would love to see him go on a tear, that would help our miniscule chances a great deal.

Well, phooey! I was hoping he would land in St. Louis. Now I guess I can hope that there’s a trade swung either in August or the off-season and that he’s in St. Louis for 2018.

Could be an interesting next 18-19 hours. Then again, I am not expecting anything. The only thing I would like to see is Stanton to St. Louis.

As a side note, our old buddy Matt Holliday has seen his average drop down to .239 as I am typing this. I’d say its probably a good thing we let him walk.

See, told you Rosenthal would get them.

He was, however, bailed out on the 2-1 pitch by the umpire. Inside, off the plate, that Greg Gibson called a strike on Goldschmidt and that got Goldie all out of whack.

I agree ColHusker. He just throws BP from what I can see. Pretty much all season long except for one little stretch. I thought it was funny that Dan and Rick said he was breaking stuff all, and unhittable in spring training. Then what happens – BOOM!

And now Rosenthal is in the game. Good thing the Cubs already lost 2-1 to Milwaukee. This one is history, folks.

After scoring seven runs in the 8th last night to beat the Brewers the Nationals now have a 12-1 lead in the 4th today. Cubs are going to fly past them, and more than likely so will the Pirates and Cardinals. Brewers will end up in 4th place.

And per Bike Mike’s post above, anybody know what the weather is like in St. Louis today?

The Cubs are now in 1st place all alone after Milwaukee lost to the Nats 8-5. Big, BIG weekend series in Milwaukee this weekend as the Cubs head to Miller Park for three games. Then another BIG series as the Cardinals come in for three.

Sometimes I wonder what everybody thinks is so great about Martinez. Has he pitched like an ace this year? He is 6-8 and this game is still in the balance at 7-5 in the 6th.

I’d rather go with this lineup myself:

    Carpenter 1B
    Pham LF
    Fowler CF
    Stanton RF
    Gyorko 3B
    Molina C
    DeJong SS
    Wong 2B
    Leake P

Cubs lose to the WhiteSox today 3-1. Our old umpire buddy Angel Hernandez called Willson Contreras out on strikes to end it. The last two pitches were borderline fastballs and Angel gave them the right arm. Contreras was honked after the called 3rd strike. Steve Stone said they were both strikes. Contreras might have actually swung at the last one.

It sort of worries me to put DeJong in the 3rd slot in the lineup. A lot of pressure for a young hitter.

Our problem is that a whole lot of the players are simply having down years. Piscotty, Carpenter, Oh, Cecil, Grichuk, Diaz, Fowler, Rosenthal (ugh). It happens. Gyorko and Pham are about it offensively. DeJong has shown some signs but I don’t believe he is a true SS and he strikesout a lot. Hard telling what we have in him long term.

Hoping these players all bounce back next year. If so, that means our #1 glaring weakness in my mind is a big bat in the middle of the lineup. Most other teams have that, we don’t. That’s why I keep hoping that we deal for Stanton here at the deadline in the next week or in the off-season.

Seems like there should be more activity here with the upcoming Sunday night ESPN game. Maybe posters are down on the Cardinals and aren’t into it like they have been in other years?

Anyway, Phillies are leading the Brewers 6-2 in the 6th so with a win tonight the Cubs would be tied for 1st place. They have a weekend series in Milwaukee next weekend, that could be entertaining.

Anybody have the weather forecast for Chicago tonight? We had over four inches of rain here in SW Indiana last night and this morning. Sure hope this game gets played as I am anxious to see whether or not Wacha can put up another good outing.

Milwaukee blew an 8-1 lead but managed to escape with a 9-8 win at Philadelphia. Must be a bad day for bullpens. Remember the Cubs bullpen almost let us back into the game as well.

Is there anyone – ANYONE – in the bullpen that can even halfway be counted on anymore?????

This is really pathetic. Cubs will be tied for 1st after the Brewers lose again tonight.

I was watching the Yankees and Mariners game last night when Judge hit the bomb into leftfield, almost out of the stadium. Right at the back row or two in LF. The Yankee announcers said something about Statcast wasn’t there to measure that one, but it had to go 500+ feet.

Sure would be nice to ride the momentum of the 9 run 8th inning and the 11-4 win into another win today. Wont be easy against Quintana, looks like he can be filthy at times. Looking forward to the lineup today.

11-3 heading to the bottom of the 8th.

Now, this is about the only time i would ever feel comfortable with Rosenthal in the game. I’m not watching, but i assume Matheny has put him out on the mound?
