I agree guys. I think Braves announcers point was that the Dbacks manager came to the home plate ump wanting to double switch and there really wasn’t any need for that since Souza was already out of the game and there was nobody to double switch.
Chris Welsh, the outstanding Reds announcer, said a couple of months ago during a Reds/Brewers game that….”I remember it wasn’t too long ago when it was embarrassing to strikeout”……
And amen to that too Mr. Welsh.
I’ll have to miss the game tonight since its Friday night and high school football night. The 3-0 Heritage Hills Patriots come to Jasper to face the 1-2 Wildcats. This is typically a big rival game. If Jasper is going to have a winning season this is one they sure could use. Might be playing in the rain since we have an 80% chance of rain tonight thanks, I believe, in part to Hurricane Gordon.
I assume McCarver is going to be in the booth with Dan tonight due to the implications with Detroit and the ’68 World Series?
And Jager, are you going to be anywhere near Bastogne when you get to Belgium? My dad fought with the 101st Airborne in WWII and was at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
And then right before turning around and walking off, I give him a quick little slap along the side of his head.
Sort of like……”Four inches from your chest Pyle, four inches!”
“What side was that Private Pyle?”
Well said jj-cf-stl.
Cardinal baseball is old school, hard nosed, serious baseball. Not goofy stuff and clowning around in front of Cardinal Nation. I wouldn’t mind if both Jose and Carlos were not around next year.
Our old buddy Brandon Phillips, just recently called up by the Red Sox, hits a two run homer in the 9th today in Atlanta to give the Red Sox a 9-8 win over the Braves.
Hard to believe its been eight (8) years already that he and Molina got into things in Cincinnati.
Is Wong back off the DL today? Is he available tonight?
Sad thing about all of this is that should we win the wild card game then we would probably have to face the Cubs in a best of five series. And you know how that would go. It would be a repeat of 2015.
I still think the rule should be that the winner of the wild card game would NOT face their own division winner in the 1st round.
Martinez WHIP as a starter –
His WHIP as a reliever – 0.750
And he’s pitched how many innings as a reliever this year???
I’d try Carlos at closer.
You mean the guy who, after six years in the league, still has a hard time throwing the ball over the plate? The guy that walked two today?
Speaking of blowing it……did anybody see the ending of the Cubs/Brewers game today? Bottom of the 9th, tied 3-3, one out, bases loaded, Yellich hits a grounder towards Bryant at 3rd. He takes 3-4 steps, tags 3rd, fires to first, and misses Yellich by a hair. Winning run scored. Why oh why oh why he didn’t just go home I have no idea???
Shades of Jim Lindeman back in 1989, in Houston. Here’s the boxscore. He tried to tag 1st and then fired home to get the tag play for the 3rd out but, like Bryant, he was too late.

This scenario is about like the Edward Mujica/Trevor Rosenthal situation back in 2013. I believe it was 2013. A guy that had been good the whole year all of a sudden loses it (Mujica) so they go to the hard throwing rookie down the stretch (Rosenthal). Just substitute Norris for Mujica and Hicks for Rosenthal.
Pugs…..”Honks me off” is a good old southern Indiana slang for “Pxxxxx me off!”
That goofball Jose Martinez and his failure to do anything with the bases loaded twice in key – KEY – situations the last two days really honks me off. That goofy stuff of his is okay when things are going good but when he fails like he has the last two days it only magnifies the fact that he is a goof.
I hope he’s not with the Cardinals next year. Is he under contract for 2019?
This one is going to be a fooler. Most are expecting a pitchers duel but like Game 7 of the 1967 World Series, the anticipated pitching duel will fail to materialize.
This one is going to be around a 6-5 final, one way or the other. Don’t expect it to be 1-1 in the 7th.
I don’t know why but for some reason I keep having problems posting. Keep getting that same old error message.
What are the odds that both
Euro, that’s good that you got your buddy of 11 years there next to you. When I got back from the high school football game tonight my buddy of 3 and 1/2 years, Whitey Herdog, was waiting on me. Nice to know I have at least one buddy in the world.
And my prediction of the high school game was way off. I predicted Jasper 35 Boonville 14. It ended Boonville 28 Jasper 14.
With the Cards seemingly in control its time for a shower, my Subway steak and cheese and chop chip cookies, a cigar, and an episode of Barnaby Jones. Doesn’t get any better than this.
Edit: After this was posted I see its now 7-4 thanks to Cecil. Hope we can hang on here.

O’Neill and his strikeouts are worrisome. Same way with a lot of the Cardinals. Sometimes I wonder what the minor league coaches are doing since the players seem to strikeout all the time. Choke up, shorten the swing, become a punch and judy hitter with two strikes.
And speaking of strikeouts, I see Randall Grichuk is about his normal self for Toronto. He’s hitting .247, 19 homeruns, and has struck out 87 times. About a 25% K rate this year. Maybe a little better than year’s past, don’t know.
The Giants send McCutchen to the Yankees. One less bat we will have to contend with in September when the Giants come to Busch.
I am going to have to miss the game tonight as I will be at the high school football game. Boonville at Jasper. Home Opener for the Jasper Wildcats. I am picking the Cats in this one 35-14.
Cubs hang on in Dixie and down Atlanta 5-4.
Milwaukee wins today. 2-1 over the Reds in 11 innings.
And speaking of the Reds, did anybody see the amazing turn of events in the Brewers/Reds game last night? Lorenzen is going to bunt but pulls the bat back because the pitch was up and in. The ball hits his bat, he fouls it off and even the Reds announcers said that’s strike three. But Homeplate umpire Tony Randazzo, and the entire crew, ruled because he pulled the bat back he wasn’t actually trying to bunt so it remained just strike two. On the next pitch Lorenzen hits a three run homer. How Craig Counsell didn’t get tossed I have no idea.
Cubs in Atlanta to make up a rained out game from several weeks ago.
Is Jordan Hicks turning into another Trevor Rosenthal? That being that he throws real hard but he has control problems. So far in 66 innings this year Hicks has walked 35. I know this is his first time in the big leagues but that’s too many walks. Much like the way it was with Rosenthal, its almost to the point where I get worried every time Hicks comes into a game anymore.
I hope he finds better command. As somebody stated on the Tuesday game thread….it doesn’t matter how hard he throws if he cant find the strike zone.
Six home games this week against two teams under .500. We need to win at least four of these games. We cant have a letdown this week. Then off to Washington for three games with the Hatchets. Those three games don’t quite scare me as much now since Washington has sort of thrown in the towel on the season.
I wonder if Dave Martinez’s job is in jeopardy?
Being in Colorado what are the chances Gomber has issues with his curve today? With tomorrow being an off day I assume his leash will be pretty short in this one.
I went two and out in the 9B tournament. Lost 7-3 and then 5-1. That was the first tournament I had ever played in. I was nervous, couldn’t think straight, a lot of people watching, missed shots I normally make in my sleep, missed the 9B once, scratched off the 8B once, couldn’t get used to the 7-footer as I normally play on a 9-footer. All in all, a good learning experience.
Looking forward to the game tonight. Carpenter and DeJong need to get it going. Cubs win again over the Reds today.
