It could be called sunk costs. You’re right that Mo will sink or swim based on what Matheny does. He can’t distance himself from Matheny now.

1. No because they needed offense.
2. The deal for Stanton is always out there.
3. No.No doubt. The Cubs will go strong for everything they need and the Cardinals will be timid as usual.
You mean the Cardinals being in the WS next year? No, it couldn’t.
1. TWO middle of the order bats
2. Closer
3. Leadoff Hitter
4. Top of the Rotation Starter
5. Defensive upgrade
6. Middle relief
7. Innings eaterThank you, Brian:
You are exactly right about adversity and facing it instead of using it as a constant excuse.
Brian:
That’s interesting…I thought it was Stanton. Maybe there is hope after all. Thanks.
You do know that Stanton said he does not want to live in the Midwest. He has a NTC…he can veto any trade to the Cardinals.
Mo and company don’t sign anyone or trade for anyone or even make an offer without clearing with Junior first. They’re not under any microscope. They are a mouthpiece for the owner. Junior has decided in recent years to NOT sign any big names and NOT trade bundle of prospects for a star. I’m not criticizing that necessarily. It’s Junior’s team. Mo is not going to sign a five year deal at twenty million year unless Junior authorizes it first. Mo is like all GM’s is just a lackey for the owners.
Theo has made some meaningful deals that have paid off and they have not been cheap. But ,m he didn’t do anything without the permission of the Cub owners first.Whatever happens this off season will all be Junior.

That is the key word in your post. Everything you said is correct.
Your analysis is sound.
But when do they EVER go big?
Interesting that Bill and Kathy DeWitt were in their seats until the last out.
I’m not sure why that is interesting.Heads will roll.
I doubt it. Unless they add Stanton, Goldschmidt or Arenado color me bored. As usual it will be more recycled garbage and slugs but Mo will be excited about the team just like he was this year.
Please no. We only need one .500 team at a time. I don’t think I could stand another one.
Well, it’s pretty easy to me. The team is void of talent because the owners did nothing I the off-season to appreciably improve a team with major holes. I have news for you, it’ll be the same next year.
There could be many of those in the future.
Embarrassing finish to the season for the Cards. I wonder if Mo and Mike refer to Theo and Joe as their daddies? I can’t wait to see some shrewd wheeling and dealing by Mo over the next few months.
I assume that is sarcasm because it is very funny.
The Cards have quantity. They need quality. Get the best player in every trade or spend in the free agent market.
You are absolutely right, Brian but they never do that. They get second tier players and the results bear that out.
He’s a future ace. Like Shelby Miller?
If all those players sucked as you said and they did then it falls on the people who decided to place those guys on the roster. How stupid is the front office? Leake was below five hundred, Broxton was mediocre last year, Piscotty was pedestrian after his first good year and what genius thought Carpenter could be a third place hitter. Somebody badly misjudged the players we had. If Fowler and Cecil are an example of what they can do in the off season then don’t do anything. Junior saying he will make moves in the off season is a joke. If he brings in Stanton and Goldschmidt then he has my attention. But he’ll use bandaids and promises like usual. The talking points are already out there. We can’t block our future superstars, we can’t trade our future, we can’t disrupt the depth we have, We don’t want any big contacts that will prevent us from making deals in the future, the players we have will just have to do better and there are a dozen more. The usual crap And 2018 will be a repeat of 2017. Lifeless team, mediocre performances and no playoffs.
Junior as a stellar owner? I’ll be laughing at that one all weekend.
bccran:
So, what is the solution this winter?
I find this laughable. There isn’t enough work for a GM let alone an assistant. You don’t need an assistant to do NOTHING at the deadline. I doubt if the Gm or the assistant will be overworked this off-season.
bccran:
I don’t blame Matheny for much. He makes bad moves and good ones like any manager. The problem is and always has been your buddy Junior. He won’t trade prospects or spend money so the team will always be in a miasma of mediocrity.

You just used a word that is incompatible with Junior…blockbuster.
It is a weak lineup because we have nothing but weak lineups because of the lack of talent this team has because the front office has been on vacation for a few years. Yes, it is probably the best lineup that we could put on the field from the roster we have and THAT is the problem.
Boy, that is a weak line-up. It’s amazing we are as close as we are.
