I’m not sure how this team has proven to be a good one. I would suggest that 16, 17 and 18 were far from good years. In 19 they put on a push and won a weak division on the last day. They had no chance to win the WS against Dodgers, Nationals, Yankees or Astros. To be fair to the Cardinals…the Twins, Brewers and Braves had no chance to win the WS either. The Cardinals were in the lower half of the eight playoff teams. I want them to be in the upper four…a powerhouse but with Junior’s business model they’ll never be anything but competitive. The money is there and always has been. So, I or anyone else could easily “devalue” what they have done because they haven’t done enough. They traded for Goldschmidt…good but you can’t stop there. It clearly wasn’t enough. They need to acquire more talent like that or better from the outside. But they choose to bring up prospects hoping for a Pujols or Molina. Not going to happen. Rasmus was the second coming and now Carlson. Prospects have one purpose for me and that is to trade for “proven” good players from other teams. Yes, I want them to be better and I will devalue what they’ve done if they continue to fail to make the team a better one. True; making moves doesn’t guarantee success. But if you need to make improvements to make the team better it requires moves. You certainly are not going to get any better by doing nothing. Baby or Bathwater? On a mediocre team…what is the difference?
What career?

Your right, of course, they’ll never be anything more than competitive. With Junior’s business model the payroll will always be reasonable and they’ll do just enough to be in contention for the playoffs until the last week or day of the season. Winning the WS means nothing to Junior. If he draws 3.4 and makes 50 million profit, he’s happy. If they luck into a series win like 06 or 11 that’s fine but he’ll never do enough to make it likely. That’s what being a Cardinal fan means. I can live with it.
He will definitely have to win a spot and perform to keep it. He’s a minimum salary guy or close to it. They’ll never bench Fowler or Carpenter because of their contracts but Bader doesn’t have that protection. He’s roller skating in the middle of the rink and he doesn’t have the railing in case he stumbles. Good luck Harrison…you’ll need it.

I have a disliking for inane small talk and useless conversation. My wife’s family invented it and traipsing to her family reunions is torture for me. I usually turn away or walk away when they start on the weather or how are the crops down your way. They don’t like me…big surprise. To me, talking of Arenado is pointless and serves no purpose. However, there are people who either think his acquisition is a possibity or who just like flogging a dead horse and as idiotic as I think that is, it is their right as you say. I will try to be more gracious in the future.
In the end of the season press conference after 2018 Junior said they were going to push for results in 2019 (not those exact words but the meaning was clear). They went out and acquired Goldschmidt and Miller and it helped. They did what they said they would. At the end of the season press conference in November of 2019 Junior made it clear they ere NOT going after any of the big names (Big Money) and they didn’t. Arenado cetainly classifies as big money. They were going to fill their needs from within and that’s what they’ll do in a few weeks in Florida. They NEVER at any time suggested they would make a giant deal like Arenado and yet many posters on this forum, as inteligent as they seem to be at times, actually thought there was a chance that Arenado would end up in St.Louis. It was my greatest source of laughter during the hot stove league this winter, which was a cold stove league for St. Louis, but Junior said that going into the off season.
The explanation is simple math. I’m not calling Junior cheap but he’s no fool. He’s a shrewd businessman.
If the Cardinals traded for Arenado, they’d sell 3.4-3.5 million tickets.
If the Cardinals don’t trade for Arenado they’d sell 3.4-3.5 million tickets.
Why would Junior or anyone add 35 million dollars to their cost of doing business for the year when it would have virtually no effect on the revenue? Can we end this idiotic thread and concentrate on who will play left field, who will close, who will start, etc. You know, things based in reality.
I’m anxious to see what the offense does without Ozuna and Martinez since they contributed at times in contrast to some of the slugs were left with.
Bader is a bust like most prospects. Only a handful make it big (Pujols, Molina, Flaherty and a very few others). He’s just another flop.
You have to go big to be an elite team. Make the Arenedo trade and a couple of more for quality talent then you can approach elite. That would cost too much money and too many prospects and that will never happen. The Cardinals can be a respectable team and that’s all. Mo said the rumors were 90-95% untrue and I’m sure they are. That translates that there is a 5-10% chance they’ll do anything worthwhile.
The Cardinals should do this in a second. To shy away from Arenado or someone like him because of the perceived talent that is being traded is the kind of timid approach that has made the Cardinals mediocre in recent years. Be bold and take risks I say. You’ll never get any better by playing it safe. I don’t think we’d be giving up much at all. Hudson is the one talent that we’d miss. Martinez is a risk to stay healthy and if he becomes a starter then hell be on the 60 day before June. O’Neill is Grichuk Jr. The prospect from Tampa is just that. Who knows if he’ll be any good ever. Get quality talent now and quit waiting for the phenoms to be great when they almost never are. If this is real, and I have trouble believing that it is, then make the deal by all means. Be bold Junior…trade prospects and raise the payroll…please!
More of Mo’s low-hanging fruit.
The first big test for Reyes is…Can he get out of ST without season ending surgery. I’d put the odds at 50/50.

If anyone thinks that Junior feels any compulsion to invest that 6.4 million in new talent or if Junior is ever going to reduce his profit margin to put more talent in the field…does not know Junior. They won the division and the NLDS. That means nothing to me but to Junior it validates doing nothing and spending nothing. So, you would do well to abandon your schemes and dreams of Junior being a big time player this off-season. The roster is largely set for next year. You can make out your opening day line-up today.
DeJong in the 4th spot? I haven’t head anything that funny in months. The thing is, however, it would be typical of the Cardinals to acquire no one for the middle of the lineup and declare DeJong the cleanup guy. You might get your way, GaneCard.
Team of the Decade
First Place
Three World Series Titles
Giants
Second Place
Two World Series Titles
Red Sox
Third Place
One World Series Title
Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, Astros, NationalsThose are teams of the decade in their proper places.
The who would bat third?
Then who would bat fourth?
The Front Office knows they made a big mistake in signing Fowler but they can’t say so publicly.
They also know that no other team wants him.
On Opening day 2020 the lineup will look like thisCF Fowler
2B Wong
1B Goldschmidt
RF Martinez
C Molina
LF Edman
3B Carpenter
SS DeJong
P FlahertyGet used to this and it will reduce your angst when few or no significant moves are made.
The next two years will be something called…playing out the string.
November 16, 2019 at 2:06 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #114586Thank you gscottar. You have said everything that needs to be said to render this thread superfluous.
A trade thread has no validity until 2022.
I don’t see what the dilemma is. Edman will play left. Martinez and Fowler will split right and Bader and Fowler will spit center. The outfield for 2020.
November 15, 2019 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #114504I can assure you that the FO does not agree with you that we need a LH starter. And, if we somehow have one next year he will come from Memphis.
Yes, some bad contracts should be eaten but don’t expect Junior do that anytime soon. They have some bad contracts and until they are expired there will be no meaningful moves by this FO. The next two years will be a wash until they have room to make moves and the hall-of-fame prospects arrive from Memphis. If you want to watch your team in the World Series you need to find another team.
The Nationals won the games that counted. The fact that they only won two more than the Cardinals is superfluous. The Cardinals should have made the moves in the off-season and at the deadline that put them in a position to win the games that counted but Mo said they had enough…clearly they did not. It’s hard to improve your team by doing nothing.
Cardinals27:
It’s not about an open mind as to performance in ST. It is very simple, actually. Contracts start and play. Carpenter and Fowler will start no matter how bad they are in ST or how good the youngsters are. !8.5 and 16.5 million are not going to be bench players. Those two and DeJong will do more to paralyze the Cardinals next year over alleged cheapness. As has been said before by fans and the FO itself, though veiled, bad contracts keep the Cardinals from going big in the off-season.
The only one out of Hummel’s list that is likely to sign with the Cardianals is Wainwright.
