I think that’s just more of a case of due dilligence.
If you run Statcast Outs Above Average (the only defensive metric I believe in) over a four year time period to reduce variability, Reynolds has been worth 5 outs above average to Carlson’s 4. They are roughly the same defensively in CF.
Yes, they are allowed to go on the IL

In general, the A’s prefer players with 5-6 years of control going back, but if we sent a package of Carlson, Woodford & Yepez they would get two players with the desired control, plus an upgrade in center or RF. A’s upgrade three positions, Cardinals maximize one position.
The A’s outfield, as it stands, is atrocious.
For the Cardinals, moving Carlson would mean pursuing one of Brandon Nimmo, Cody Bellinger or Michael Conforto as a CF, or moving Tyler O’Neill to center and acquiring Benitendi or Brantley for left.

They were sending Bader up and down because of his 28% K rate in the majors, and he was a standout defender.
The Cardinals are not an organization that takes kindly to players striking out at the MLB level.

You have to do the voting. For instance, Burleson had the second-most votes at #3, but wasn’t chosen until #5. If we are doing ranked choice for 5 at a time, the results will be different than two at a time. The votes here were based on choosing two at a time.

13 – Brycen Mautz@stlcard25 – I have read many times that scouts consider SEC equivalent to AA ball. Three of the other Power 5 conferences are just behind the SEC, so they would probably be equivalent to High A.
It is also easier to scout pitchers than hitters, because a pitcher will touch the ball 80-100 times per game, whereas a hitter will only bat 3-4 times per game, and may have 0 balls hit their way during a game.
So, those are some factors/mental adjustments that go into scouting traditionally.
I think the equivalencies were developed a long time ago, and have to be updated due to showcase circuits/video, but all that probably explains why you can put a college pitcher in A or A+ and feel confident they will succeed at that level.
#11 – Joshua Baez – – Really came on when promoted to Palm Beach. Ended with .286 avg and an OPS of .958. If that translates as he moves up the ladder, he will turn heads as he predicted when he was drafted.
Yeah, but that 36% K rate…
This is where I will board Bob Reed’s hype train for Bernal.

November 19, 2022 at 10:32 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #207214The last two years, the OPS+ for:
DeJong

2022: 78Everybody wants to move on from DeJong, but people are advocating for Bellinger?
Let’s assume the Cardinals have (roughly) $20 million to spend this offseason. They want a catcher, a left-handed bat and are looking for pitchers if a deal comes along.
Here are some possible scenarios:
-
Option A:
– Trade Carlson + Burleson to Pittsburgh for Bryan Reynolds (solves CF/LH bat issue)
– Sign Christian Vasquez (MLBTR projection: 3 years/$27 million) (solves the cather issue)
– Sign Quintana (MLBTR projection: 2 years/$24 million) (nice-to-have)-
Option B:
– Trade Tyler O’Neil to Toronto for Danny Jansen (solves the cather issue)
– Sign Andrew Benitendi for LF (MLBTR projection: 4 years/$54 million) (solves the LH bat issue)-
Option C:
– Trade Burleson + Woodford + lower level prospect for Jansen (solves the catcher issue) (iffy on whether Toronto would accept a package like this)
– Sign Michael Brantley (injured, but solves LH Bat issue) (MLBTR projection: 1 year/$15 million)-
Option D:
– Trade Tyler O’Neil to Toronto for Danny Jansen (solves catcher issue)
– Sign Brandon Nimmo for CF (Solves CF/LH bat issue) (MLBTR projection: 5 years/$110 million)Which option would you choose?
8 Thompson
9 McGreevyJansen did post a 141 OPS+ last year, and has a career 98. He fills one of the Cardinals’ needs, but creates another one if we were to trade O’Neil for him.
Blue Jays are also looking for a left-handed bat for their outfield (as are the Cardinals).
MLB.com ranked Walker #1 and Winn #7 in terms of AFL peformances. No questions about Winn’s defense at short.
The asking price for Yelich was perceived to be too high so we settled on Ozuna.
Yelich wasn’t offered on the trade market until after they moved Ozuna. IIRC, the Cardinals preferred Yelich but were told he wasn’t available.
Yes, in hindsight, that was the worst trade Mozeliak ever made. Gave up Alcantara and Galen for an injured (shoulder) player.
But that came after years of the Cardinals missing the playoffs because they didn’t have a MOTO bat. Part of that was philosophy at the time. The Cardinals had been good at drafting pitchers, and publicly stated they would just trade pitching for hitters.
Also, the year prior, the Cardinals did inquire about Ozuna (pre-injury) and were told the asking price was Alex Reyes. They walked away at that point.
