Edman batting second, at SS. That’s the least controversial thing about todays lineup. Oli left the well beaten path today is an understatement.
Develop from within is alive and well on the StL position player roster, and the outfield depth is a good example.
We traded away Bader and no glaring depth need was exposed. We lose his replacement Carlson to the IL and is he really missed in the lineup? Yepez has one second half PA, but the Noot steps up and fills the need. Burleson? He couldn’t even crack the roster until rosters expanded. This is what develop from within is supposed to do, fill depth needs.
No, the pipeline hasn’t produced the next Pujols in the outfield, in fact we don’t even have an all-star out there, but we don’t have a Fowler type sucking up 100 GS like a black hole either.
Complimentary outfielders entering their prime years is a good position to be in. Anything top 10 in mlb is a good thing.
Every time our outfield takes the field, its only natural to view them as sub-par, because they are sharing the field / lineup with two mvp candidates and a legendary hall of famer. Under that lens they are sub-par.
But, the context of this topic is our outfield offensively, vs mlb outfields offensively, for the season.
That should also include Yepez and Donovan, who have combined for 63 outfield GS and each owns a RC/G well above league average. Those two combined have actually made one more start than Noot’s 62 GS.
Our depth in the OF is helping carry our offensive ranking vs most mlb outfields. Once you include Bader and Dickersons contributions, we have penciled in seven different players who have all produced near or well above league average.

September 10, 2022 at 8:21 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 140 thread – Saturday, Sept. 10 at Pirates #200038My concern with Flaherty is the lack of K’s. He is currently a ball in play pitcher. His low swing and miss rate suggests he is not at his best.
“One of the worst hitting outfields in the major leagues?”
I’m glad you put a question mark after that sentence bccran. The correct answer is no. In fact the StL outfield is top ten by ops+.
If we consider defensive value and base running, the outfields ranking only improves.

I played for Wally Moon at JBU, but it was before grass was green, so hardly seems worth mentioning these days 😋

September 8, 2022 at 4:13 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 138 thread – Thursday, Sept. 8 vs Nats #199793Donovan got on base so many times today that I lost count. I couldn’t make out our lineup without him in it.
September 8, 2022 at 3:56 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 138 thread – Thursday, Sept. 8 vs Nats #199788We didn’t have our best lineup out there, but today was about our pitching, and we didn’t hold back on that.
September 8, 2022 at 11:24 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 138 thread – Thursday, Sept. 8 vs Nats #199714O’Neill his first 300 career PA’s had a 37% K%. Gorman is at 33%.
Over time O’Neill has worked it down to 26.5% this season. Gorman following the same trend wouldn’t surprise me.

September 8, 2022 at 5:47 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 137 thread – Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Nats #199665Montgomery with a GmSc of 68 and a no decision.
This lineup never quits!September 7, 2022 at 7:45 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 137 thread – Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Nats #199589Two points BB, about Carlson / Burleson.
1) Did you notice the CF backup DeLuzio was added to the roster on Sept 1st?
That suggests to me that Carlsons injury has a history of a week or so. Who brings DeLucio up before Burleson unless it’s to meet a possible defensive need?
2) If they wanted Burleson up before Sept 1st, it would have happened.
September 7, 2022 at 4:01 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 137 thread – Wednesday, Sept. 7 vs. Nats #199550They don’t need a phantom injury to demote Carlson. Seems legit to me.
