I have seen Kjerstad play in person many times. He is a beast with the bat. He reminds me of a young JD Drew.

Tommy ranks in the top 2 or 3 of my all time favorite Cardinals. I hope he gets in.

Don’t count on any boost in payroll for a year or two. It will probably be the opposite.

I would imagine the Cardinals would prefer a more proven outfielder as well but this situation came down to money and was predicted months in advance. Dewitt gave the front office a budget and that budget filled up in a hurry. The team was really boxed in with money owed to Leake, Cecil, Fowler, Carp, A. Miller, and to some extent Yadi. There was only so much money to play with this past offseason and we only had room for B. Miller and Kim.

Had we had more financial flexibility the OF would probably have another proven veteran.

Not just Manfred. A huge majority of the owners and front offices are getting their wish too. Of course Manfred pretty much works for the owners.

Now that I think about it there are actually two MLB size stadiums in Arlington, TX. There is the new Rangers stadium and the old Rangers stadium. The old Rangers stadium was used for some XFL games earlier this year. I wonder if it could still be configured for baseball and used for night games to avoid the Texas heat.

It seems as though a new plan is going to be leaked each week just to keep MLB in the news. Not a bad PR strategy I suppose.

As for the 3 state plan I agree that keeping the divisional alignments are a plus. Another plus is that games for each team could be televised in their normal time zones, which would help TV ratings.

I might also add that there is a AA ball park in Frisco that could host games.

That does seem rather aggressive. While the Arizona heat would be a negative at least they wouldn’t have to worry about rain outs.

To have any chance of playing that many double headers in that short period of time I think rosters would need to be close to 40. Might as well just let teams use their current 40 man roster. That would have to be an advantage for the Cardinals right? I like our 40 man depth, especially with pitching.

A couple of random thoughts concerning the Arizona Plan:

Some believe that the covid-19 virus will not spread as fast in hot weather. I am not a medical person and have not read if that theory has ever been proven, but if there is truth to it, what better place to be for hot weather than Arizona in the summer?

Would the 15 grapefruit league teams be assigned to one of the existing cactus league facilities to share with the home resident? I know that a few of the cactus league sites already have two teams but the majority don’t. I also know that the plan calls for college facilities to be used but I don’t know how many. I was just thinking to myself how humorous it would be if the Cardinals and Cubs shared the same facility in Mesa. What a hoot that would be.

Why do you think that? Aren’t they motivated to hold off as long as they possibly can?

Maybe but then they would run the risk of having to continue to pay the players without any guarantee there would be any baseball played. As of now the players are paid through May 31.

So what if they extend salaries to June 30 with no revenue? Then July 31? Then August 30? Before you know it you have ran out of calendar yet you spent a lot more on salary than you originally obligated yourself to pay.

Of course that is assuming that the owners would extend some kind of salaries past May 31 while trying to salvage the season. I suppose they could say that they aren’t paying any more salary after May 31 but still haven’t given up on the season but that would anger the MLBPA. No easy choices.

This article addresses the very issue we were talking about. It is behind a paywall but the general gist is that the two sides are far apart on what the salaries would be in empty ballparks. I would hope there would be some kind of compromise. Squabbling over money when a lot of people are going without paychecks is not a good look.

I am thinking that MLB will need to make a decision before June 1 as to if there will be any kind of season or not. If there is no season then the players will get the $170M and we will get ready for 2021. If there is going to be a season then they will have to decide how the prorated formula will work in empty stadiums because I don’t think there is any chance fans will be in stadiums in 2020. You are right in that it is strange they didn’t clarify the part about prorated salaries in empty stadiums in the original agreement.

I went back and found the article from Jeff Passan.

    https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28964249/what-mlb-deal-players-means-2020-season-beyond

So players got service time. Are they getting paid now, too?

Their salaries for 2020 will be prorated. If teams play an 81-game schedule, players will get 50% of their full, agreed-upon money. If they play 120 games, they will receive 74%. Performance-bonus clauses will be prorated too.

If the season is canceled, the only payment players will receive is the $170 million advance teams guaranteed players to be distributed in April and May. The money is essentially a down payment on salaries for 2020. Should games be played, it will be factored into paychecks. If no games are played, the players get to keep the $170 million without repayment.

The agreement adds that players cannot sue for their salaries — an important distinction even though Paragraph 11 almost certainly would have held up in a grievance setting.

I usually don’t care about hearing from Anthony Rizzo but this was kind of interesting.

    https://theathletic.com/1753624/2020/04/17/rosenthal-qa-with-anthony-rizzo-on-helping-front-line-workers-this-cubs-team-and-more/

    An excerpt:

OK, let’s switch over to baseball. What do you think of the Arizona plan? (MLB continues to discuss an idea in which all 30 teams would be quarantined in Arizona and play games with no fans).

I think you’re going to have a hard time telling grown men with established lives to stay in a hotel and not be with their families. You’re going to tell Kris Bryant that he’s not going to see his baby (born April 7) for 4 1/2 months?

It might not be that long. It might be more like six weeks, only at the start.

Six weeks, I think that can work. It’s just the logistics of it. Hotel workers and grounds crew and cameramen. … It can be pulled off. I think it could. But health and salaries, how do you work through all that? They can’t pay us full pay, right? Then playing into November, December, you’re jeopardizing getting ready for next season. I want to play. But we don’t want to jeopardize two years of baseball. That’s the hard part.

This is a long but interesting article from Peter Gammons. To sum it up he writes that MLB may not fully recover until 2023 because of falling revenues and the public’s hesitance to come back to the park even after the proverbial “green light”. He also writes that the most devastating impacts are going to hit the minor leagues because they do not have TV revenue to fall back on. He speculates that there could be much more upheaval for the minors than just contracting 42 teams.

I sense you are missing my point. They have pay matters to decide fairly soon even if there are no games in 2020.

Oh I thought the $170M was the guarantee to players if the season was cancelled. I figured that would be the last payroll issue to decide unless the season does begin.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with starting talks but nothing will happen until the medical officials give the green light. I respect Dr. Fauci a lot but I think he was saying in theory there could be a way to make it work but as usual the devil would be in the details.

In my non-medical opinion there will be no sporting events of any kind in 2020 with fans in the stands. Having games without fans will be centered on how fast we can ramp up testing. There appears to be a ways to go on that.

That is what I have been saying. If they start in Arizona then they should finish in Arizona. An empty ballpark is an empty ballpark no matter how many seats it holds.

Of course they should take a cut but we don’t know that they aren’t willing. There might be some initial saber rattling but I suspect at the end of the day they would do it as long as the cuts are “reasonable”, whatever that is.

But we are probably getting the cart before the horse. I think we are a long ways off before seriously seeing players getting anywhere close to a baseball field.

On the plus side if the season is cancelled that means no more Cecil and Leake salary to be paid and one less year of Fowler and Carp salary to be paid. Miller would probably become a FA since his vesting option wouldn’t vest. Yadi would probably have to take less to play in 2021. Waino would be TBD.

I have the solution. Put all three teams in the same division as the Yankees! 😉

Not a bad idea Brian. Currently when the Rays host the Yankees and Red Sox the visiting team has the majority of fans. Kind of like when the Cardinals visit KC.
