Being able to provide the best deal to the Marlins is only half of the battle. They then have to persuade Stanton to waive the NTC to come here. Good luck with that.
Jim Bowden has stated three weeks in a row on MLB Front Office that he thinks Stanton will either go the Dodgers or stay in Miami because those are the two places he wants to live. Jim Duquette predicts Stanton to the Cards by the way.
Happy belated Thanksgiving to all!

The Cubs are supposedly in the mix as well and I know they are maxed out at $300k like we are.

November 22, 2017 at 5:04 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #38160There is only a $3M difference in what the Cards can offer him vs what the teams with the most international money can offer. Is that really that big of a gulf in the grand scheme of things? If he is as good as advertised he will get a multi million deal soon anyway. I get the impression that this guy isn’t trying to maximize the amount of money he gets right now, otherwise, he would have waited two years and be eligible for the big contract immediately.
November 22, 2017 at 10:45 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #38151I wonder if the Cards will pursue Ohtani or just do the standard “due diligence”?
Stanton wants to play for the Dodgers. He can tell Derek Jeter to either work out a trade with the Dodgers or he will just stay in Miami and there is nothing the Marlins can do about it. Stanton has all of the power.
It probably won’t be resolved until the Winter Meetings.
November 20, 2017 at 10:29 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #38050If we don’t get Stanton, I say let’s sign Cargo and either Cozart or Hosmer, then focus on trading for Archer and Colome.
I will say what I said from the start — this makes no sense if they keep carpenter. None.
Agree. The only reason to think about bringing Morrison aboard is if it is in conjunction with another deal. Sort of like when Whitey acquired Rollie Fingers and Bruce Sutter, then later moved Fingers in another transaction.
If we sign Morrison, then the club must have a committed deal that includes Carpenter going somewhere.
Maybe or they could always keep Carp and move Wong or Gyroko. There are many many scenarios that could play out.
So far the teams mentioned most are the Cards, Giants, Red Sox, and Phillies, but at the end of the day I think he goes to the Dodgers. That is his hometown and where he really wants to go. They could use one more big bat to seal the deal on a World Series championship and they have all the money in the world. It just makes sense.
Now is it the type of deal Andrew Friedman would normally make? No, but he isn’t in Tampa anymore so he should stop acting like he is.

November 18, 2017 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37996I would have zero interest in Garcia.
I would have interest in Abreu.
I also think Cargo would be a good complimentary piece if we could also get an Abreu, Donaldson, or Cozart.

Miami would probably rather have Wong than Carpenter. Having to turn around and trade Carp would be extra work for them so they would probably rather have a more straightforward trade. They seem to be wanting to move Gordon so Wong would be a cheaper alternative.
If we traded Wong I guess Carp could play 2B and Martinez/Morrision at 1B.
Morrison would be a nice complimentary acquisition. I agree that a platoon with Martinez would be good. Now if he is the centerpiece acquisition for the winter that would be very disappointing.
Jager, I like all of the players you want to obtain but it would require a $300M payroll. Not even the Dodgers would do that. We have to make choices. Can’t have everybody.
As for Matt Adams, there seems to be a lot of revisionist history regarding him. He was a solid, average, platoon type player who was never going to blossom into anything more than that. Just because he hit a playoff homerun off Kershaw some fans remember him as Babe Ruth. He wasn’t so let’s calm down about him. Trading him wasn’t a big loss. He will be on the bench in Atlanta.
November 15, 2017 at 5:32 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37865Colome and Nicasio would be a good, relatively cheap, bullpen solution. Leave plenty of money left for big bat and rotation. Of course, that is assuming the Rays would be reasonable in what they wanted for Colome. They are notorious for being difficult to deal with.
No way would I include Reyes in ANY deal. He needs to be our ace for the next 10 years.
One name Goold threw out yesterday as a Plan B is Cargo. I think we could get him relatively cheap and still have money left over to make more significant moves. I think he could be similar to the Beltran acquisition a few years ago which worked out well for us.
November 13, 2017 at 12:08 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37716Jon Heyman is reporting that the Cards could be in on Darvish or Arrieta, even stating that Mo met with Darvish’s agents Sunday night.
Yes I know that Heyman has a reputation for hyping certain players and agents so take it for whatever it is worth.
I dunno Gscottar, i don’t really see any of those bats you want helping us really much at all, as i don’t think Yelich gets moved period…COazrt ugh,,, Simmons ehh…Hosmer bleh and Bruce no way no now…
Big bat is what the Cards need and none of those options you offered are that at all
As Girsch has pointed out, there is more than one way to improve a club.
I, for one, will not be disappointed if we don’t get Stanton. Sure he is the biggest bat out there but it just seems to be putting all of our eggs in one basket. I would rather spread that $295M around to several high quality players instead of spending it all on one. What if he gets hurt or slumps? Then we are screwed.
Spend the money and prospects on guys like Simmons, Cozart, Yelich, Hosmer, Bruce, Archer, Wade Davis, etc…. We can’t afford all of them obviously but if we acquire two or three of those guys we will be very strong and not so vulnerable to one injury or slump.
November 13, 2017 at 10:18 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37706Wong is the second baseman and DeJong the SS so move on from that. Barring injuries they are the opening day DP combination.
Don’t be so sure. D. Goold reported that the front office was considering a defensive upgrade at SS. Cozart would be an upgrade defensively plus he has a nice bat. I’m not giving up on Dejong at all. Put him at 3B and let him hit 30 bombs with solid defense.
I think Gyorko is trade bait. He had a pretty good year but I remember a couple of balls that he didn’t run out down the first base line. I remember Matheny not being amused at all.
I don’t view Girsch as a figurehead. Obviously he is below Mo in the chain of command but he comes across as very assertive and knowledgeable to me. I think he is going to have much sway in the day to day operations while Mo will monitor the overall operations of the club.
November 10, 2017 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37620The more I think about it the more I like the idea of signing Zack Cozart for SS and moving DeJong to 3B. It would be easier to pull that off than orchestrating a trade for Simmons.
I’m pretty sure O’Neill is a RH hitter.
November 8, 2017 at 12:26 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37496Meanwhile, Lackey says he wants to pitch again in 2018. I’d like to see the Cards bring him back on a one year deal. He would be a decent innings eater to bridge the gap until our younger pitchers are ready to step up.
November 8, 2017 at 12:23 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #37494I think I would like to see the Cubs do that trade. That strengthens their pitching but weakens their OF. It also adds salary to them. If they re-sign Arrieta and sign Martinez, they will be a beast for 2018 but will be getting close to being financially handcuffed for the future years. All those moves would put them close to $200 million in salary in 2018. After 2018, they have arbitration raises for Bryant, Hendricks, Russell, Schwarber, Baez and Montgomery while only having Rondon and Justin Wilson as possible FAs.
The Cardinals would definitely be able to counter with some moves but they have to be willing to make them. The acquisition of Stanton would have to be done.
Getting rid of the Heyward contract would be a dream come true for the Cubs. Their OF defense would suffer some but they would more than make up for it in other ways. Samardjia would be a solid number 4 in their rotation, Melancon is probably due to bounce back as his old self, and they would still have plenty of money and trade chips to go after JD Martinez or Stanton. Advantage Cubs.
