Usually the team that loses a devastating game 6 will always lose game 7. The momentum is hard to stop. Karma was kind to us in the 2011 Series though. That kind of made up for 1985.

One exception was the 1975 Series when Fisk hit the famous homerun in Game 6 but the Reds came back to win Game 7.

As a general rule I have never paid much attention to ST stats. They usually don’t matter much one way or the other. I know they matter to the bench guys trying to secure a spot but I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a guy hit .150 in the spring then go out and have an MVP type season or hit .450 in the spring then be released by June. You just never know. I will start paying closer attention when we get to Cincinnati.

Interesting story Pugs. I am glad you kept it rated PG-13. 🙂 I was over at a friend’s house that night in ’85. It turns out my friend was from Kansas City so that 9th inning was a night I would like to forget.

I have never had too many interactions with the ballplayers. One of the few times I had tickets close to the field was in the late 70’s at Busch. The Cards were playing the Braves and I had seats right behind the visiting bullpen, which at the time was down the third base line. Before the game I got an autograph from one of the Braves catchers, Biff Pocoroba. He was very nice. I was just a kid at the time and I didn’t realize he was just a bench player. It didn’t matter. I still have that autograph. Sadly, Biff passed away last year.

I think room usually finds its way due to injury or poor play

I meant room financially. We need to keep payroll space available to make a move for down the stretch. In recent years Mo has stood pat at the deadline but maybe this is the year we make a move.

Fans in stands. We are working with our fan base. They are the only reason we have jobs.

I am glad Shildt said this.

I am very pleased to hear about the Lou Gehrig Day. He is one of my all time favorite MLB players and favorite humans in general.

If it were me I would keep Reyes and Gant in the pen to go along with Hicks, Gallegos, Miller, Cabrera, and others. That could be a nasty pen.

If Mikolas goes down then we could have CMart and Ponce in the rotation to go along with Jack, Kim, and Waino. If Mikolas can stay healthy then either CMart or Ponce could go to the pen.

We do have several options but we also have several question marks. I would prefer to see Oviedo, Liberatore, Thompson, and Woodford to start the season in the minors or alternate camp and be ready for a callup later. It might also be a good idea for Mo to keep an eye on an addition from the outside.

I agree bling. I wouldn’t count on Reyes for anything. Anything he gives us is a bonus.

To be honest the MLB season should have been pushed back a month also.

Hernandez’s body of work as a Cardinal is rather impressive, despite what misgivings people have for his off the field issues or the fact he finished as a Met.

I think you are correct on both jager. Both would be a fit for us but I want to make sure we save room to make a move in July.

What Jim didn’t say is how much he likes the roar of the crowd when he makes that unnecessary lunging catch coming in.

And Edmonds used to like crashing into the wall or sprawling out on the field unnecessarily for dramatic effect when he didn’t have to. Big deal.

As each day goes by I am starting to feel more queasy about Mikolas. I know the Cardinals say they aren’t worried yet but we don’t have a good history with being confident about injuries.

Of the five mentioned I would rank them:

    Hernandez
    Carlton
    Smith
    Morris
    Renteria

Players shouldn’t be penalized because they played with other teams.

Back on the subject of this thread, ESPN (subscriber article) has a new stock watch.

    Cubs at 89.7 wins
    Cardinals 84.8 (37% playoff odds)
    Brewers 81.7
    Reds 76.7
Bucs 62.5 (#29, only ahead of COL)

I still think the Cubs are being overvalued. Yes, they still have most of their offensive core so it is possible that Bryant, Baez, and Rizzo rebound and put up big numbers but their rotation could be very bad.

Jay Jaffe of Fangraphs recently published an article about who might be after Odorizzi and this was their assessment of the Cub rotation, which is almost verbatim what I posted on February 23.

Woof. Outside of Kyle Hendricks, the Cubs don’t project to have a single pitcher worth 2.0 WAR or even one that will fan more than 7.6 per nine, and while the quality of their defense mitigates that somewhat, this is particularly grim. Arrieta, Alec Mills, Trevor Williams and Adbert Alzolay may each have a facet or two that inspires hope of outpitching his projection: Arrieta, a former Cy Young winner, was an ace in Chicago; Mills threw a no-hitter last year; Willams was excellent in 2018; Alzolay “has mid-rotation upside assuming good health,” according to Eric Longenhagen. But together, that group projects for 3.7 WAR in 481 innings, which again, woof. Given how tight the NL Central should be, any upgrade could have an outsized impact, though it seems unlikely that cost-cutting Chicago is willing to travel that route.

I like the element of speed in the game. Batting Molina in front of O’Neill and Bader nullifies that, should Yadi get on base. Its tough to hide a very slow path clogger and it irks me when it costs runs.

That is true but O’Neill and Bader are going to have to prove they can hit better consistently before they are moved up in the order. Their speed on the base paths doesn’t matter if they can’t get on base.

One of the main points of the article is that your two best hitters should bat 2nd and 4th. Assuming that is true I would go with:

    2B Edman or Carp
    1B Goldy
    SS DeJong
    3B Arenado
    RF Carlson
    C Molina
    LF O’Neill
    CF Bader

As for Gorman, what I’ve seen of him he’s Russell Branyan.

Ouch. That comparison stings. I certainly have higher expectations for Gorman than that. Gorman has yet to play in a MLB game so we are all guessing but I could see him having a career similar to Matt Carpenter or Mike Moustakas. Maybe even better than those two. He probably will never match Carp’s walk rate but he certainly has the potential to match his slugging. I could see Gorman moving around the field defensively like Carp and Moose too.

Why would you trade away half of your team for a SS when guys like Lindor, Baez, Story, and Correa could be free agents next winter? And do we need an upgrade at SS? If the Cards go for a big offensive upgrade at the deadline or next winter it will probably be in the OF.

O’Neill just won a gold glove playing LF so it might be difficult to move him. Of course that doesn’t mean he couldn’t win a gold glove in RF also.

It is hard to say who will be a star and who won’t, not to mention the fact that people define what a star is differently. Two comparisons for Carlson I have seen recently are Ray Lankford and JD Drew. I don’t know if either would be considered a star but both were good players. I would say Lankford was even more than good. The Cardinals would probably be happy if Carlson has as good of a career as Ray did.

I can’t argue with any of those predictions. I agree that Thomas is probably the better player but Williams being out of options could be the tiebreaker.

The 14-12 split in favor of pitchers is interesting. While on one hand it makes sense due to limiting pitchers innings and potential piggybacking, having a short bench will be difficult without the DH. Having a 4 man bench would be much easier with the DH.

Sosa is certainly the favorite for a backup IF spot but it wouldn’t shock me if Rondon made the team. At a minimum he would probably get a taxi spot. I have read some good things about him.
