The only good reason for getting Machado for 2018, other than his production, would be to block him from the Cubs for at least a year. I know that is a silly reason for some but not to me. In my opinion our first goal now should be to finish higher than the stinking Cubs. I know all of the PC talk about “doing our own thing” and “not worrying about what our competitors are doing”. That is a bunch of hogwash. You don’t think the Yankees and Red Sox tried to block each other and compare their rosters to each other over the years? Of course they did and probably still do. The same thing now applies to us and the Cubs.
Not only are they our biggest rival but they are our biggest obstacle to winning the division so we should naturally want to construct a roster better than theirs. Playing for a wild card game is too risky.
The fact is that the Cubs are going to be a major force for at least the next four years. That is when several of their players will reach FA if not locked up before then. We had better beef up our roster now if we want to have a chance at more than a wild card berth.
I’m with you jager. We need to forget about Machado and Donaldson and go after who we can get. The only problem I have with Archer is that they will demand Reyes and that is a non-starter for me. They can have everyone else you mention plus a few others but I draw the line at Reyes. He needs to be here the next 10 years.December 19, 2017 at 10:32 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #40035
I don’t know why the Marlins are catching grief over their tear down. They are doing what the Cubs and Astros did. Tanking is the going thing now.
I’m really doubting we do the one year rentals on Donaldson or Machado. I would bet it is more likely we get something done with the Rays. If we do the blockbuster for Longoria, Colome, and Archer how much would we part with?
I would offer Gyorko, Grichuk, Wacha, Kelly, Flaherty, and Hicks. I suspect the Rays would want a different package but that offer would be my preference. We really need to trade our arb eligible guys if possible. That would free up enough enough payroll space to go after Darvish.
If we could send Baltimore Gyorko, Grichuk, and Wacha it would almost be a revenue neutral deal for 2018.December 15, 2017 at 3:16 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39824
Mo could just be posturing.December 15, 2017 at 12:54 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #39809
If we do a blockbuster trade with the Rays I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kelly go there.
Colome would certainly be cheaper salary wise although I think Davis is one of the top 3 closers in the game. Colome probably ranks in the top 10.December 14, 2017 at 5:10 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39739
There was one report saying that we might have to kick in some money if something was found in the medicals. Since everyone passed their medical exam I’m assuming no money is being sent but I haven’t seen 100% confirmation of that.
I still think we are in the hunt for Davis. I would love to get him. At a minimum we should drive up the price because it is most likely going to be either us or the Cubs that sign him.December 14, 2017 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39718
Does anyone know if the Cards had to kick in some money to the A’s? I have yet to be able to confirm that.December 14, 2017 at 2:54 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39717
I also would be very surprised if Grichuk stays here. The 4th OF will either be a Memphis guy or someone like Jarrod Dyson.December 14, 2017 at 2:51 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #39716
I think we snag Davis, at least I hope we do.December 13, 2017 at 5:53 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39582
Frankie Montas struggled in 2017 but has a really high upside. I would be interested in him.
Dyson would probably go somewhere that he is more likely to play a lot.
Maybe so but considering Pham and Fowler’s injury history I think he would get his share of playing time.
I’d send them Gyroko, Grichuk, and Hudson for Machado.
Maybe throw in another prospect to get Britton also.
Hate to miss out Nicasio.
I know we don’t traditionally spend big on closers but I would like to get Davis.
Hate to lose Mags but we had to give up someone.
Might be able to sign Jarrod Dyson on a relatively cheap deal to be 4th OF.December 13, 2017 at 3:28 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #39521
Munoz is currently ranked 13 in Oakland system. Projects to be a solid utility infielder and possible starter.
I don’t understand why they haven’t locked Nicasio in already. I’d rather have done that than get Gregerson.
I totally agree.
Well that’s a big freaking “if”.
I think this would be a great move!December 13, 2017 at 3:20 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #39516
The dominoes are starting to fall.
Trading away a potential 30HR player making the league minimum with five years of control for a superstar player with one year of control is a risk I wouldn’t take.
Rougned Odor looked really similar heading into 2017 and still hit 30 homeruns both years.
The Cardinals aren’t trading away five years of DeJong for one year of anyone else. It won’t happen.
