Why would you say Greene and Fernandez would be in the bullpen. That has not been the Catdinal’s history. Even guys with the bullpen in their future, if the Cards think they have high upsides they try to get them as many innings as possible in the minors. Ellis is a better bullpen bet in my opinion.

Why be a fan then Nate? With that attitude you are only going to have near continual disappointment.

Litrell may not have been great overall last year but as a potential LOOGY he was awesome. .156 baa and gave up an OPS of only .439 to lefties

Our projected starters pretty much suck right now in terms of offense. Current Spring OPS.

    Gyrko .269
    Wong .422
    Ozuna .540
    Fowler .542
    Yadi .659
    Pham .775
    Dejong .921
    Carpenter – injured

I know, it is Spring training. But at what point does concern set in? Some of those numbers are just putrid.

Brian, do you see these minor league availabilities for exhibition games as more of a reward for good camp performance or more of we want to see what this guy’s got?

Cards signed former Marlin Yefri Perez to a minor league contract and assigned him to AA Springfield. Perez actually got called up by the Marlins in 2016. Looking at his stats he must be one heck of a defensive player because his offensive stats sure didnt warrant a call up. And in 2017 he was even worse offensively.

So now Matheny is indicating he wants to start the year with 8 relievers (13 pitchers). I wonder if him and Mo have talked and come to this conclusion or whether MM is off the reservation.

Never heard a pitcher credit Matheny with any mechanical change that helped. Kind of surprising really.

I’d easily extend Pham for what we gave DeJong. I’d even give him the $26 million over 4 cost controlled years rather than DeJong’s 6 years. Of course I’d want the same option year pricing for Pham. I doubt Pham would do that deal though.

Snowflake, sorry if my trying to emphasize a point makes you feel bullied. That was not my intention.

In my world, playing well when you play is more important than how much you play. Owings played more. And he played worse. Below league average offensively (last year and career) Below league average defensively as a shortstop (last year and career – and trending downward). Below league average in CF (last year and career – and trending downward). Compared to Garcia who was below league average last year offensively (but better than Owings) and above league average for his career. Who is an above league average defensive shortstop (both last year and career – and trending upward).

Yes, Owings played more but not better. Yes, he can play CF but he does it poorly. Yes, he makes 5 times the money Garcia does (oops, that is not a plus is it).

Brianp, my WAR valuation of DeJong is not based on what a FA WAR is worth because DeJong would not be a FA for those years. He would be 3 years prearb and 3 years of arb. That as I said above is apples and oranges in terms of comparison. The numbers I gave were rough valuations based on his contract status – not that of a FA (because he isnt one and would not be during this six year period). A 2 WAR player is not going to make $22+ million in his 3 arb years (+ $2 million +/- during his pre arb years). Feel free to dispute my apple numbers but please dont do it with oranges ?

So Jags, am I really going to have to show again that statistically, both offensively and defensively, that Garcia is superior to Owings? It was true before last year and it proved true again last year. It is exasberated when you talk about batting against RH pitching where we need depth. If you look at just bWar on an adjusted 500 plate appearances, GARCIA’S WAR IS ABOUT 2.5 TIMES THAT OF OWINGS. I REPEAT – 2.5 TIMES THAT OF OWINGS.

The only advantage Owings has is he can play CF. But players to play CF is not something we lack.

Yes, I acknowledged the inflation angle in my post. Given this years FA market, not sure we can assume the same salary inflatiion as in the past. If DeJong is 3 WAR average for the next 6 years then probabky not an overpay. If he is 2 WAR it probably is.

Besides it only being Spring training, need to realize we have played 7 of our 12 games against teams that were in the playoffs last year.

I cant believe people (including prominent national baseball writers) continue to compare AAV of contracts of players with both non-arb and arb team control years to those contracts of players who signed contracts as free agents. Apples and Oranges! The only relevant comparison is that of what DeJong would have gotten going year to year and what he got by signing long term.

As a comparison, let’s look at the shortstops that will make more than the $9 million DeJong will make in his last cost controlled year. There is only one (Simmons – the best in the game) that would be in a cost controlled year. Let me repeat that number – ONE! Is DeJong
going to be that elite? Granted, that number does not take in to account salary inflation but it is still an extremely high number. I have no argument with the signing. I just think the price was way out of line. Some would argue the value is in the option years but those are also priced high. They continue to value him as rating a salary as one of the highest paid shortstops in the game.
