I’ve already had enough of the announcers slobbering over how good Flaherty looks. He looks OK. Control not super sharp here early. His delivery looks fine but not effortless. Why not let his performance tell the story instead of the non stop babble.

Couldn’t agree more. And the slobbering all over every chance to mention Pujols and blah blah blah. There’s a reason the volume is usually below 5 when I watch because I’d rather not listen to them. Had it up earlier and Pujols AB in the 1st I already had to turn them down. Like I’ve said there are way worse out there, but many times I choose not to listen.

Most of the rain in the St. Louis area broke up and there’s just a few scattered in the area. Looks like it should stay dry.

Junior is out of options after this year so he couldn’t be stashed in AAA next year, guess they made the decision he wasn’t going to part of the pen moving forward.

Mets also losers today and now hold a within reach 5.5 game lead over the Redbirds for W/L records among division leaders.

They are chasing the Mets and the Braves for that #2 seed. The Mets have the second easiest schedule remaining, behind the Cardinals, while the Braves is a little tougher. I still think the Braves catch them and win the NL East. Cardianls would still be the #3 by winning the division.

The winner of the AL Central is going to the the #3 seed and host the last wild card. While it looks like BAL is going to miss the playoffs while still having a actual 3 game lead over the AL central.

But September 20-28 is going to tell me how much I dream. They go on the road to play SD, LAD, and MIL. Will be a really good gauge right before the playoffs. Not beating up on CHC, WASH and PIT, even if CHC had a .500 Aug, it’s still the Cubs.

See I just have to talk bad about a player and they will hit rockets. Kizner is terrible! (Hope it works again)

I don’t understand why they don’t play Donavan at 2B and DH Groman

I’m not going to hate on Gorman. I think he is the 2B of the future and think defensively he’s fine. I don’t think he’ll ever live up to the #1 prospect media hype, but I think he’ll be a serviceable 2B that will produced .250-.260 with a decent number of walks and doubles and will rack up some K’s and HR. I don’t think the HR numbers will ever match the “raw power” because of the swing and miss. But, I think they should definitely be in putting the best lineup on the field they can and to me that would be DFA DeJong and call up Yepez, and Gorman only part time right now. Donovan at 2B and DH Dickerson, Yepez, Pujols. I don’t know who backs up Edman at SS in that situation, I guess Donovan and Gorman is the 2B in that situation. I know they want to commit to Gorman, but I don’t think he’s the best option right now, maybe he is next year, but not to me and winning right now.

I noticed last night that it looks as though Carlson has lost some weight

I have my own nicknames I call players. Carlson has always been “skinny legs”.

Rats I wish I’d get some of that rain. It was steady for about 20 minutes this morning, but that was it and looking at the radar it’s all going right around me. My yard is dry.

Rats a lot of it is breaking up before it get to St. Louis. Hopefully it’s just some scattered sprinkling and no delays.

Interesting. I assume with Pujols play and Yepez limit defensively they found the need for another CF more important than another RH 1B/DH. There is a 40 man spot open for him, but I had assumed it would be used for Flaherty to come off the 60 man IL another move will be needed to activate him when the time comes.

I don’t understand your math. Without short rest, the Division Series game 1 or 2 starter can only pitch game 5. Game 4 has to be pitched by the #4 starter

OK they could need a 4th SP in game 4, could be a pen game too with the next day off. But probably would see Quintana there. But again Flaherty could really change things if he can prove he’s healthy and can throw strikes.

First 2 rounds, unless they can catch the Mets for that 2nd seed. But as it sits right now they’d play 3 games vs SD in STL. I’d lean towards Montgomery starting game 1 right now, but would understand Wainwright too. Either way it’s those 2 in the first 2 games. Mikolas in game 3, if necessary. If they get past SD then it’s 5 game series vs. NYM and still only need 3 SP. There’s still a lot of baseball though and if Flaherty can make 4 good starts then who knows what could happen.

Matters how Flaherty looks when he comes back to me. Right now I’d go Montgomery, Wainwright, Mikolas. You don’t need a 4th SP until the championship series. With the WC round being best of 3 (3 straight days) and the Division Series being best of 5 (2-2-1 format).

I was typing out looks like Odorizzi is going to pass up his longest outing vs the Cardinals easily as he’s never made it more than 5 2/3. Ends up that’s all he makes it tonight ad Noot hit the HR.

Yes, Wooster, Odorizzi was pretty highly touted coming up with TB. Cardinals have been rumored to be in trade talks for him at least 3 different times I remember including this past trade deadline. When he’s been healthy he’s been solid, but never lived up to the hype as the big time starter, he’s also lost 3-4 MPH from what I remember him being in TB.

I know Gorman is trying to create lift, but his back side gets low and he’s under the ball a lot. I’d assume his stats on balls down are significantly better than balls up. And then Edman has the opposite going on where he’s pounding a lot into the ground a lot and over a lot of pitches. He’s definitely at his best when he’s hitting line drives from line to line and racking up the doubles.

Going back to the announcers I like Jon Sciambi, even being a Cubs announcer, but not a fan of Eduardo Perez or David Cone, or ARod when he was on there or his alternative broadcast thing they have done trying to find gold like they did with the Mannings on NFL.

I like the lineup. Probably prefer Gorman at DH and Donovan at 2B, but I’m sure they want to commit to Gorman at the 2B and not the DH. I also don’t like Donovan at DH because of the defensive versatility. When they bring in a LHP to face Gorman late and the Cardinals counter with Pujols, then your forced to move Edman to 2B and bring DeJong into the game. If Gorman was at DH then it doesn’t effect anything.

I was just dreaming earlier today if we could have just convinced the Marlins to take Flaherty instead of Alcantara

At the time Miami probably wanted Flaherty, probably Hicks too, and the Cardianls said no. Flaherty was a highly regarded prospect at the time, Alcantara had some major league experience but was a thrower then with upside. Cudos to Miami for developing Alcantara into a pitcher and a very good one at that. When the trade was mad I remember being on the old Cardinals forum talking about how trading Alcantara wasn’t a big deal because he was a thrower and probably destined for a relief role because of it. It was Gallen I didn’t like giving up, but understand you have to give to get (even if it turns out the Cardinals didn’t get a whole lot either), but I agreed giving up Gallen was better than giving up Flaherty, Hicks, or Weaver. Can’t be right all the time I guess.

Cardinal lineup last night was impressive. 6 runs scored using 26 outs and a 5/6 BB/K.

Nootbaar, Donovan, Goldschmidt, Arenado are absolute musts to have in the lineup EVERY DAY at this point.

The pen is what I was most impressed with last night. 4 ip, 2 h, 0 BB, 7 k. Hicks throwing strikes is HUGE. If the SP can keep them in games, like they have since the deadline, and the pen can step it up they will win games. Even last night Montgomery wasn’t as sharp as he’d been, but also had some soft hit balls that found holes, but it was enough to keep it close and the pen was huge in the win. Unlike Friday when Quintana wasn’t sharp, but again kept it close, and then Pallante and Stratton were OK, but gave up runs, and then Cabrera imploded and. If the pen Friday, does what it did Saturday who knows how that game goes.

Don’t know if the Redbirds have ever faced him, but I see tonight’s SP for Atl

Cardianls have faced him. Not since 2018 when he was with Minnesota and them also in 2014 and 2017 when he was with TB.

I find it interesting it’s the one who grew up in the St. Louis area a fan of the Cardinals starting for the Braves and the one who grew up in Georgia rooting for the Braves starting for the Cardianls.
