In a big day of offense, four #STLCards affiliates scored double-digit runs as the system went a perfect 7-0. Johnson City’s Kevin Woodall is our Player of the Day for his three home run, six RBI evening. https://t.co/Q1m5cYYDpt pic.twitter.com/vxVIa54eMX

I really like “The Gibson Line”, but wouldn’t that be 1.12?
Tonight’s Chiefs starter, Angel Rondon is close, at 1.17, but it is only over one start. To your main point, Fagalde is definitely having a nice year.
As a side point, when Gibson was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1981, 64 of 401 voters did not select him on their ballot. What a stupid process.
Coincidentally, I just noticed Woodall is both the tallest and biggest player in this Cardinals draft class – 6-foot-6, 240. Only five pounds advantage over Parker Kelly and one inch on Michael Baird.
Yes, the 26th man will almost certainly be Luke Weaver to make one start. 10 days have not transpired since his option out so they can get around it this way even without another injured pitcher. Very creative.
Update: Mikolas will pitch Sunday.
Seven new transactions today (Wednesday).
I feel very strongly both ways! 😉
Yes, CC, that is correct – but that stipulation is only for the post-season. During the regular season, it is like any regular DL move.
Mikolas has been placed on paternity leave with Bowman promoted from Memphis.
Wednesday’s game between the Memphis Redbirds and the Iowa Cubs has been postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at AutoZone Park.
My goodness. bccran asked why MM was said to be ranked low as a manager, a question for which he already knew the answer. I reminded him of one of the examples we discussed from this very thread, from 2017. It seemed silly to me to repeat the same pros and cons discussions we’ve had for 40 pages.
Pads shared a couple of 2015 surveys and one from a year later. I don’t doubt the perception of Matheny’s performance in his job was better before and has declined over time. After all, a lot has changed in three years – starting with two plus one on track seasons to miss the playoffs. Not to mention the player conflicts last season and this.
Every single person posting (and reading) here already made their mind up about Matheny long ago. No one is going to convince anyone else to change their view. So why keep getting upset about it? Agree to disagree and move ahead.

July 18, 2018 at 8:54 am in reply to: What is right with the Cardinals and what can be done to keep it going?? #60716Yes, generally the drafts have been good, though I am not excited about recent classes as much. The first three picks in 2015 were not great, but the next four (Bader, Hicks, DeJong and Helsley) more than made up for it. Hudson, Knizner and maybe Carlson may make 2016 ok despite Delvin.
Contrast that 2015 success in rounds 3-5 with 2017. That is why I don’t give the Cards a pass for last year, even though their first selection was not until round 3. We have seen very little from the 2017 class as a whole. The best pick might be the 11th rounder, Mendoza. Still plenty of time for someone to emerge, though.
Another factor I noticed (and wrote about) is that this year, the Cards abandoned their recent approach of saving money in rounds 1-10 to spend more on higher risk picks later. My review of that showed it has not been effective. (It was started pre-Flores.)
July 18, 2018 at 8:33 am in reply to: What is right with the Cardinals and what can be done to keep it going?? #60714It looks fine on paper, but it is impossible for anyone to accurately assess any draft after just four weeks. Two of the top five picks haven’t played a single professional game.
Selective memory. For example, the crew at MLB Network explained why they ranked Matheny 30th of all MLB managers last June. (This link is from an earlier page of this same discussion thread as part of an identical dialogue between us last August.)

There are many examples over time of similar reviews. Reading them/listening to them will provide ample logic. You can certainly disagree with the cases presented, but feigning lack of awareness/understanding why Matheny was not considered by many to be a good manager? C’mon now.
The #stlcards system went 5-2 on Tuesday. Four of the wins were by one run, including a Gulf Coast walk-off. Player of the Day Austin Gomber tossed five shutout innings in Memphis’ home victory. https://t.co/vK6PiuQAtI pic.twitter.com/PbBZVNWdJg

A 2-5 week knocked the high-A Palm Beach Cardinals from first to fourth in the standings. Chase Pinder has seized the lead-off role and is getting on base for RBI man Dylan Carlson. ($) https://t.co/z9jvBAX0Qe pic.twitter.com/mMCnXIp3ZH

Two late-night transactions have been added to the article just above.
Game ends, AL 8, NL 6 in 10 innings. 10 home runs in total hit.
Astros Bregman and Springer go deep back to back against Ross Stripling (who replaced Mikolas on the NL team) to put AL back on top 7-5.
AL looked like they would win 5-3 as Jean Segura hit go-ahead 3-run HR in eighth. Scooter Gennett tied the game with a 2-run HR in ninth. All 10 runs scored via HRs. Now into extra innings.
Molina flied out to deep CF in his only AB.
The night is over for @AustinGomber!

T6: Memphis 1, Iowa 0.

July 17, 2018 at 6:43 pm in reply to: What is right with the Cardinals and what can be done to keep it going?? #60676Yes. As far as we know, the Cards did not make Lynn an offer, except the one-year deal they knew he would decline. Most would agree he had to settle far below value solely because of the unique free agent market this past winter.
For example, MLBTR, which studies the market extensively, estimated in November that he would get four years, $56 million. While the AAV was accurate, the term was not.

#Dodgers increasingly likely to land Machado, sources tell The Athletic. Barring last-minute snag, several of interested teams expect that outcome.

July 17, 2018 at 5:31 pm in reply to: What is right with the Cardinals and what can be done to keep it going?? #60671But even if all those are true, will the Cardinals make a substantial offer? It takes two to tango.
