FWIW, Clapp’s career managerial record is 158-107, .596.
Bochy is ranked 12th. That is a heck of a lot better than 30th.
Francona and Boston ownership were at odds. The issue was not his managerial abilities. You can read about him here.
Hmmmm, let’s look back all the way to yesterday. Who brought up managerial rankings in this thread in the first place? It looked so promising – until it gave the wrong answer. So today, we discredit them.

If the discussion was ownership or the GM, the last 10 years regular season record is interesting. Since many of those wins were under TLR, however, it is not a valid comp for Matheny.
And as we have seen, his team’s post-season record has been in a consistent annual decline. With this potentially being the second straight non-playoff year, it is natural to expect more scrutiny and criticism on the manager and the organization. That is not all on the manager for sure, but it is clear the rest of the division has caught and in some cases, passed the Cardinals. The recent trend is concerning to many, many observers.
We are a week into August and today’s big celebration is that the team reached .500 for the first time in over two months.
I did find it interesting that the #1 manager in the MLB Network feature from this June is Terry Francona, one of the Cardinals interviewees when Matheny was hired. Of course, the grass is always greener…
It’s been said that we should give credence to “those in the know”.
… unless they say what we don’t want to hear …
Second game in a row of big offense after a long, dry spell. If they could sustain this output…
Assuming they win, they will have reached .500 for the first time in over two months.
I went back to TV. The video quality is dialed down, but it is at least not jumping around and looping the third inning over and over.
Yes, MLB.tv is a mess tonight. I switched to radio.
It would be interesting to see the dates and sources of those surveys. I bet many were before this season.
I recalled seeing MLB manager rankings on MLB Network fairly recently and found the discussion. It was on June 20. Brian Kelly, Ken Rosenthal, Dave Valle and one other analyst discuss the list.
Matheny was ranked dead last – #30 of 30. Valle was uncomfortable with the subject and when pressed said to look at won-loss record and standings. Rosenthal did not take exception with it, saying the names at the bottom are generally those who fans, observers and probably MLB execs consider to be the lowest-ranked managers. Specifically, he mentioned the Cardinals were playing a poor brand of baseball.

wagee12, that kind of testing is happening all across MLB this month. Teams are putting players on revocable waivers. Using Leake as an example, if the Cards put him on waivers and San Diego claims him, one of two things can happen.
1) The Cards let him go and his contract passes to San Diego.
2) The Cards pull him back. In that case, they can only trade with San Diego. He either is traded to them or not traded at all.The third option is if he goes unclaimed. In that case, he could be traded anywhere.
Back some time ago, the Cards made an August trade with San Diego – Woody Williams for Ray Lankford. Both had cleared waivers, if I remember correctly. Neither was a part of his old team’s long-term plans, so made available.
In the case of Leake, if one long contract is traded for another, I could see such a deal as possible. But are they going to give away a starter with a 3.34 ERA? Of course not.
Another take on the not having it both ways. If one does not feel qualified to offer a critique due to lack of personal experience, it also means the individual does not have the knowledge to offer credible praise, either.

bccran, ask your contacts why Oquendo is no longer on Matheny’s staff and instead prefers to work elsewhere in the organization. Go beyond the convenient explanation of his knees. Who knows? It might be enlightening.
Following on bikemike:
Wacha vs. Ishikawa was notable because of the magnitude of the failure, but not unique. TLR used to talk about it in the context of putting players in the best possible position to succeed. I don’t hear that any more and see a lot of examples where that philosophy does not seem to be followed. Over time, the examples stack up.
FWIW, I think 11 percent is too high for all minor leaguers. I have seen a 10 percent number thrown around in the past, but when looking deeper, I find that it is always for DRAFTED players because they are easily trackable. No free agents, no international players, though. As you would surely agree, the odds are much lower for the bunches of 16-year olds being signed. Last year, the Cardinals signed almost as many international players plus free agents as they did draftees – both in the 30’s – so the number of players excluded from these studies can be significant.
