DeJong came out very well in defensive metrics and his plus bat makes him an asset for the Cardinals. While I would like to see the overall defense better, too, I don’t consider shortstop the primary problem. JMO.

    In 2018 SABR Defensive Index:
    Segura #5 AL SS – 5.0 SDI
    DeJong #3 NL SS – 6.4 SDI

For all, there is one big difference. Rolen is on the current sportswriters ballot while Boyer would have be considered by a Veterans committee.

Funny you should mention that, bikemike. Just this morning, I suggested to crdswmn that she might consider profiling Trader Lane in one of her Monday history segments. Great minds…

gscottar, I am in the dark about this, so will offer some scattershot thoughts. When you encounter the issue, have you tried logging off and on again? Does the problem persist? Have you experienced this on different devices (if you have multiples you can try)?

When these posts fail, what error message (if any) do you receive?

How about this. You get 10 minutes to update a post. Try making a short post and have the long information ready. Then edit your short post, paste in the long content and see if it takes. Feel free to use this thread as your test bed, if you would like.

Here is another thought. Have you ONLY seen the problem on the RUMORS thread? As everyone knows, that thread has some kind of issue that stops the active page number from working when you click on it. If your long post problem is specific to the RUMORS thread, maybe I should retire the old thread and start a fresh, new one. I was going to do it on January 1, anyway.

I do not know why the system is singling you out while letting others make long posts. I am sorry and I want to help. I just do not have much to go on yet.

DiPoto would probably trade the Space Needle if he could figure out a way to move it.

Speaking of Polanco, here are headshots of him when a Cardinal and later as a Tiger.

As this kind of data is viewed together, one has to wonder if there was a common thread behind it. I know some are really down on Mabry, but can a hitting coach really have that much of a repressive impact? Or is the improvement reflecting the honeymoon of being in a new place or something else? Probably no clear answer, but it will be interesting to compare the remaining hitters in 2019 vs. 2018 – or should we compare to 1H only?

I did not direct that at you, though you clearly suggested the Cards may have some interest in Segura. People don’t care about word shading of “chatter” vs. “rumor” or the like. The simple fact is that there is no credible media report to connect the team and player. I guess if we are wordsmithing, it would have been clearer had you said “fan chatter”, in which case there wouldn’t be a separate thread here. A look at Twitter indicates people who overreacted, which I am guessing you saw. This kind of misunderstanding on what is legitimate and what is not happens frequently this time of year, unfortunately.

Of course, this was far overshadowed by all the Twitter “excitement” over the fact that the paths of Nelly and Bryce Harper crossed when the latter went to the former’s concert in his hometown, and the rapper said he would like to see Harper a Cardinal. I bet Scott Boras cares. Maybe he dropped Harper’s price by $50 million or so! 😉

Anyway, back to the subject itself, to me the whole concept of the Cardinals trading for another middle infield starter given all their other far more pressing needs makes no sense at all. Sure, they could put Segura at short and move DeJong to third. But would that really make the team substantially any better than if they just played Gyorko?

BHC, as I posted above, those are not rumors. Those are bloggers thinking out loud about trades they would like to see (or in the one case, a trade he did not want to see). Not from real reporters. Not real news.

P.S. Nothing against you personally. It is just that this kind of thing is a pet peeve of mine. People are so hungry for news, ideas get twisted into rumors that are perceived to be real and get repeated, yet no one goes back to check to see that they have no credible basis. It drives me crazy…

Waiting for BHC to stop back by, I did a Google news search on Segura and Cardinals. I found two articles from the Belleville News Democrat from two days ago and one from Sunday from some place called Medium.com.

One is a blog post that says “The STL Cardinals need to keep Paul DeJong at shortstop and not trade for Jean Segura.”

The other is a video slideshow of bullet points about Segura. Its caption says: “Jean Segura, currently of the Seattle Mariners, would make an interesting trade target for the St. Louis Cardinals during the 2018-2019 MLB baseball offseason.” Seems fair.

However, the title of the latter on the Google search result says this:

Jean Segura is offseason target for St Louis Cardinals | Belleville …

Further, the last slide of the show says this: “Some analysts believe Segura would approve a trade to the Cardinals.” Pulled straight out thin air. What analysts? Where did they say this?

In other words, someone has decided Segura is a target, though there is no apparent source.

Whatever Medium.com is, that article from Sunday is entitled: “It’s Time for the Cardinals to Go Get Jean Segura”. It is clearly an opinion piece.

This is feeling like another made up rumor.

Here is the Google search which includes links to these three articles. Again, it is just “Jean Segura” Cardinals in Google News. That brings up more recent content.

I saw that, but the CBS guy was just regurgitating Buster Olney’s ESPN article ($), which is where the primary reporting occurred. Olney did not mention St. Louis or Fowler.

I will bet you a dollar to a doughnut that Twitter will be calling this a “rumor” no later than tomorrow morning.

You are welcome. The discussion here often gives me ideas about areas to research and present in longer form. My oldest son tells me often that I should write more commentary pieces.

I disagree. It is very clear the Cards have shown a long-term reluctance to trade prospects and a fear of acquiring contract year players. They are core elements of the philosophy of this organization. It has come up again this winter. The prior path needs to change, IMO, and I wanted to use data to support the point, rather than just throw out an impassioned opinion.

Thanks, Bw52. Your conclusion is not where I was going, though. Yes, the Cardinals have done great not trading good prospects. Perhaps too good. Given they’ve missed the playoffs the past three years, my contention is they should be making more prospect trades to improve the major league team.

Specifically, I do not feel worry over prospects lost should be a valid reason to dismiss out of hand acquiring a player like Goldschmidt, for example – if they are serious about contending in 2019. Assume he is going to walk and cook that into the analysis.

I agree with you, C27. That is what I heard from one source, but the proof will be in the actions in the spring. A lot may depend on which veteran lefties they bring in and how good they perform – along with Cecil and Shreve. The more good options they have, the less likely they will be tempted to rush Cabrera up as a reliever.
