Most people made their minds up about Fowler long ago and cite whatever supports their point of view.

My take is that while Fowler has clearly been a disappointment, he was nowhere near the poorest Cardinals offensive performer over the course of the 2019 season, as indicated by the data presented already (and ignored by many).

At the same time, some of you make it clear you have no confidence in the young outfielders (O’Neill, Thomas and Bader), either, while you run down Fowler, too. That makes me wonder exactly which three outfielders would meet your high standards to start.

Let’s see, how about Edman in both left and right and Carlson in center. Is that it?

Maybe some of us could be a tad more realistic.

As noted in the AP story, a motivation for MLB to not hold the draft is to save the teams money, an important consideration in a year when revenues will certainly be down.

A point to also keep in the back of our minds is next year’s plan to eliminate two levels and approximately 70 minor league player jobs. No 2020 draft could give MLB a head start on its reduction plans.

Last June, the top pool spend (for the first 10 rounds) was over $16 MM for Arizona. The total across the 30 teams was over $266 million dollars (plus rounds 11-40 expense). So in signing bonus savings alone, MLB could save well over a quarter of a billion dollars by killing the draft. That is going to get their attention.

Great idea, C27. However, that would require MLB.TV to be proactive and probably spend more money than they planned. Trying to generate fan interest and keep them engaged – even when the games are being played – does not seem a particularly high priority to MLB. It would be great if they surprised me, though.

The infection rate is not a constant. Neither is the testing rate. Those incorrect basic assumptions made render the math unusable.

Hitters, no. Some pitchers, yes, but others no.

This year, with no spring high school or college season to wear them out, all healthy pitchers should be able to pitch normally after ramping up.

Since every topic is affected by the coronavirus, I am putting this news in a more topical thread.

There appears to be a major disagreement between MLB and the union on how to credit service time this season. If my memory serves me correctly, the players got the full year in both 1981 and 1994, but the financial stakes are higher this time.

Wouldn’t that be something if when the virus threat is past, they sill couldn’t start play due to squabbling over money?

    GameCard asked:

Brian…when do you think MLB will make a decision on this?

Great question. We do know at least that the options are being discussed.

My guess is that they will decide once they have a good feel for when play will resume. If the delay goes on so long the short-season teams are affected, it would be a reason to not hold the draft at all. Why draft them if they have nowhere to play?

An article defending the PECOTA prediction of 81 wins for the Cardinals written from a perspective that would make your average, run-of-the-mill Negative Nancy look positive, done while painting all Cardinals fans with the same broad insulting brush.

Here is the original article from the AP about the potential of altering the draft. More detail on the various alternatives that may be under consideration.

Most interestingly (at least to me), is the cited motive to “preserve cash”, not because more time is needed to scout players.

That fans have varied opinions and differing theories should not be surprising. For example, last week, on a different thread here, one respected poster said that Pham was traded to make room for Bader. Choose your favorite scenario.
