Most people don’t make definitive statements that are not accurate. But if they did and I saw it, I would respond.
For example, it is huge difference between saying “Dylan Carlson is the starter in right field” vs. “Dylan Carlson should be the starter in right field”.
The first is an assertion of fact, which is not correct. The second is that person’s opinion. It seems unnecessary to have to clarify this, but here it is…

BW, my statements are personal opinion. Just like any other poster on here. None of us are speaking for the Cardinals.
Ok, but that is not what you wrote. Here it is.
He’s the #1 backup at 1B if Goldy gets injured.
Nogowski in spring training: .200/.333/.200 in 30 plate appearances. He saw a lot of action but was not on his way to making the team in March and I tend to focus on more likely occurrences, but no one knows for sure what is ahead.

I think it is a great honor to be the selected to be one of the first two teams to play in the Field of Dreams game. I know it is probably just because of distance but still it will be a moment in Cards history.
My guess is TV ratings. They already had the Chicago market so the benefit of choosing the Cubs would have been minimal. So what was the next best choice in the two Central Divisions to draw eyeballs nationally? (Unfortunately for them, they lost the original opponent, the Yankees.)
P.S. If they cared about history, the opponent would have been the Reds, as they were the other team in the 1919 World Series. But they probably want to emphasize the feel good part more than the Series allegedly being thrown.
MM3 asked:
With Brebbia now out with TJ who is the most likely to take his place in the pen?
Earlier, before the 60-man pool was announced that excludes Brebbia, I had added Alex Reyes to my projected 30 to replace Brebbia.
I then updated my roster prediction article (for members) last night to reflect Hicks staying on the IL, because I had thought he would be ready. My guess is the replacement could be between Fernandez and Cabrera. The lefty could be Cecil’s backfill if he isn’t effective.
What do others think?
As of now, it is believed that Wong will be the leadoff man, so he would be my best guess to lead the team in plate appearances. But with a short season, there could be a lot of shuffling. There is no doubt the addition of the DH helped Edman’s playing time opportunity.
And you put too much emphasis on minor league stats while ignoring other more important factors in how decisions are really made. If you said this is what you would like to see, your personal preference, vs. what you think the Cardinals would do, there would be no disagreement. But you equate the two when clear logic says otherwise.
He would have to just make the 40-man and 26-man rosters first. Those are huge hurdles in themselves, let alone starting at first base in a 60-game sprint season, when there are so many other more proven options available. I am not saying the odds are zero, but giving it a five percent chance would seem generous.
There is no doubt that Nogowski is a superior defender at first. That isn’t enough to overcome the other obstacles, however.
They really like Miller, who has 75 MLB games at first. They want more at-bats for Edman and moving Carp to first would be so obvious. The defensive upgrade at third would offset some of the loss of Goldy at first. Either of those (and probably other options cited) would happen long before Nogowski would get a chance.
They have many outfield candidates to soak up DH at-bats not even counting Carlson on the horizon.
The biggest problem with the 2020 Cardinals will be scoring runs, same as in 2019 and 2018, for that matter. Remember that this is a team that (pre-Goldy) played Jose Martinez regularly at first because they needed the offense so badly. If Goldy is injured, they aren’t going to replace his bat with Nogowski. It just won’t happen, especially not in a 60-game sprint season.
Manfred is being ripped by the national media. Why in the world would he admit this? For being such a smart guy, this was a really, really dumb admission to make. I cannot believe his bosses are happy about this at all – and it will get a lot worse if Clark and the union decide to press the matter.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on The Dan Patrick Show: “"The reality is, we weren’t going to play more than sixty games, no matter how the negotiation with the players went or any other factor”

Normally today would bring news of a batch of new international signings, but instead, to save money, the current period has been extended until October 15 and after that, no overseas amateur signings will be allowed until next January. If MLB could do more than one thing at a time, they would be working on an international draft, but that has been given lip service for years now.

No, he is not. Ravelo is. Carpenter is. Miller has played first quite a bit. So has Dean. Knizner can play first as well. All five of them are on the 40-man and Nogowski is not. I like Nogowski, but I am being realistic about the current opportunity on the roster.
Wow! All I can say is that your long-held lack of confidence in O’Neill and Thomas seems to be clouding your judgment if you honestly think Dean and Ravelo are better starting options. Further, Bader at WORST would be the fourth outfielder, not Edman, because of his defense and running skills. (Reminder that minor league hitting stats are not how MLB roster and playing time decisions are made.)
The press and fans also love Mark Cuban and he was kept out. The owners don’t seem to want big personalities in their club. I wonder if the peer competition with Jeter is a factor in A-Rod’s interest. Quite a contrast in their images, though. Not that long ago, A-Rod lied to, fought with and embarrassed the game and was suspended for an entire year. While he has generally been rehabilitated in the public eye mostly because he is smooth in front of the camera, I have to wonder if the owners can forgive and forget as easily as many fans seem to have. Either way, it should be fun to watch.
I wonder if there is a correlation between the teams that have been slow to step up to pay their minor leaguers and those that did not want to play in 2020… https://t.co/yIn9CKUMgk

Your assessment makes sense to me, Ny.
Nogowski will need help just to make the 30-man, let alone stay around for 26. The DH role will be used for those ahead of him, such as to get Edman and Miller more regular playing time. There won’t likely be a set DH, or even a dual platoon role. But it is a reminder that Nogowski has continued to do a good job. Like Luke Voit before him, though, his route appears blocked.
It could be really entertaining, but MLB has a history of vetoing prospective owners they don’t like. I wonder how the others feel about the two?
.@keithlaw says as of today he would pick the #STLCards to win the NL Central for one simple reason: Pitching.

Sorry you feel that way, 1982, but I do understand. You are welcome any time.

As a reminder, it was widely reported that the March agreement required MLB to use “best efforts to play as many games as possible.”
As it is said, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Manfred must have forgotten he was staring down the barrel of a bad faith grievance that he intentionally delayed negotiations. Might have just handed the union their case.pic.twitter.com/JNeO4pMC0N
