To clarify, they knew about Bader’s migraine before the lineup was posted. He was not in the lineup so was not scratched. There is a chance he could appear later in the game.

However, Fowler was in the original lineup and he was a healthy scratch. He is not expected to play.

Edman moves to right and Carpenter is in the lineup for Edman.

On the protests, there is no right or wrong – just opinions and positions. Fowler chose to sit out. That is his right. His employer supports his decision.

Further, clean it up. The posted site rules say this:

Profanity of any kind will not be tolerated. Any text insinuating profanity (using abbreviations, another language, leaving letters missing in the word, using special characters instead of letters, etc.) will also be considered as profanity itself.

To the Sherriff point, the Rays have seven members of their bullpen on the IL. Regular injuries have to be way up across MLB this year.

Worth noting that one of those struggling CLE OFs is Oscar Mercado, now back in the minors. Maybe the Cards were ok in trading him away after all? It would be even better if Jhon Torres comes through, but no ball in
2020 has to have hurt his chances.

A thought or two. If the analytics suggest it was not the play with the best chance of success, maybe that is why they didn’t try it – against a drawn-in infield poised to take advantage of it. Respectfully, Edman’s bunting skills may be different from yours.

The squeeze was clearly one option, but Edman has shown enough bat control to trust him to get the ball past the drawn in infield somehow. He simply did not execute in that situation. I thought they had Rosenthal on the ropes, but he escaped. Not sure if he is regularly pitching back-to-back, but perhaps not.

Cardinals lose 5-4 to fall to 10-9 on the season. The Cubs lost as well so their lead remains three games.

It would probably not be invalid to guess that people in the organization are looking around. Having said that, I doubt the manager has time these days… Still, it is good work. It should be fun to track the actual starters compared to it.

Well, I am surprised. Before the game, Shildt said CMart will start after all and they will “somewhat loosely” have a six-man rotation through the upcoming DH stretch. stlcard25, back to the drawing board for another tweak! 😉

Unless they change their plan this time through the DHs, based on before they went with a standard five-starter rotation and plugged in others when needed. They avoided any talk of a six-man rotation or more and also avoided any formal piggybacking.

I respect stlcard25’s detailed layout, but any rotation in which Flaherty doesn’t pitch every fifth day, I am not in favor of. Part of the time in the above schedule, Waino is going every seventh day, for example. I just cannot see that happening.

I’d pencil the top four/five in every fifth day and then look to fill the gaps…

This is from a Baseball America article about the trade deadline:

In response to an inquiry from Baseball America, a Major League Baseball spokesperson said the league has not put any mechanism in place for a trade to be reversed if a traded player opts out.

How about this scenario? A player is traded from team A to team B. He decides he does not want to report to team B for whatever reason – COVID or otherwise. So he opts out and team B is screwed.

Forget no. 1 for now. The Cards have a no. 5 who has a 5.25 ERA and averages less than four innings per start. Does anyone really believe that Martinez cannot do better? Really?

P.S. Shildt is making rumblings that they can’t afford to have Martinez build up on the fly. What is the difference if he pitches ahead of Ponce or after in a given game? Both of them are going to need long relief, anyway.

I don’t see why this has to be complicated. Pair them up and let them compete directly. (With Oviedo, Woodford and Gomber, they have enough others to start the doubleheaders. I believe the innings can be managed among the pitchers they have.)

And perhaps the most consistent in the early going compared to his career, the oft-maligned Dexter Fowler, with his career OPS+ of 105. He is what he is, slightly above MLB average.

There seems no better opportunity for some of the slower-moving hitters than to feast on the KC and Pittsburgh pitching over the next four games. Gotta clean up against the last-place teams.
