Some good thoughts, analysis and discussion on the Sunday game thread. On the batting order, I like Notty in the top spot, at least for now. Like the way he hits to all fields – like Donovan did last year.

I also like Burly in the two slot against righties, with maybe Carlson there versus lefties. Then go Goldy, Arenado, Gorman, and drop Contreras to six.

This season keeps bringing back the ‘70s to me. Former Cardinals having success elsewhere while we are mediocre, and the Pirates are good. The big misfire is that the Reds and Athletics are not good – the A’s are downright terrible in fact. Maybe we will release someone and they will be picked up by Oakland and be an all-star by mid season. Taylor Motter here’s your chance!! 🙂

I like that late inning set up as well Scottar. The way Gallegos is throwing I like him in the 9th, with Helsley in the 8th.

Nice to see us bounce back after losing the early lead. The game had that “here we go again” feel to it early, but Jack kept his focus and got it done, while the offense came to the rescue.

Gorman is really looking good. A lot of progress this year.

PDJ & Gorman are making a case for an infield of Paul and Nolan on the right side, and Paul and Nolan on the left side.

Weird deal there with Cabrera. Not the best day for this home plate ump.

We have had some bad starting pitching, but Mikolas looked good last night. Even Matz had good stuff Friday night. But when there is just a bit of trouble, Marmol pulls them.

I think in some situations, such as last night, the starter should get an opportunity to get through the bumps in the road. Sometimes you need to give the starter an opportunity to gain the win, and not panic every time he has a hiccup.

Will likely be the same story with DeJong. He will hit maybe a buck seventy five with a few homers and a ton of strikeouts. But he will be good to have as a defensive player at short on occasion.

I think you are talking about a Sports Illustrated cover, 1TD. It came out before the 1968 season and had Bench and Torrez, Cisco Carlos and a couple of other guys.

I echo the comments on Chip Caray. Like him a lot. Thompson is better with Caray than he was with Dan – seems more toned down.

A couple of other good ‘70s Cardinals who did a lot more for other clubs were Jerry Reuss and Mike Torrez. Add Carlton and that would have been a terrific top three in your rotation.

Yeah, Gallen ain’t too bad either. Garcia with 3 homers and 2 doubles tonight!

This is looking like the ‘70s. The Cardinals are a mediocre to poor club, while former Cardinals are stars on other clubs. The list is getting long – Garcia, Arozarena, Gallen, Alcantara, Wisdom. And what do we have for all those guys? Liberatore – think we got Hence in a pick as a result of a deal.

Not a good day if you are a Cardinal fan thinking “what if?”. Arozarena homers and drives in all four runs as the streaking Rays win again, 4-3. Adolis Garcia has homered in his first 3 at bats as the Rangers are routing the hapless Athletics.

The club would have to be way down, like 25 games out, to be sellers. Although they have looked that bad at times, I do not think we are that bad.

But baseball is a strange game. I have said many times, you never know how things will play out. Just when you think you have it figured, it goes the opposite way.

Piscotty getting a lot of chances. Looked to be a real good player based on his early work with us. Similar to Paul DeJong in that way, as neither guy has done as well as expected based on their early returns.

AS ZTR said, projecting out at this point in the season, our club looks like a third place team. We will likely be better than we have been, but will Milwaukee, Chicago and Pittsburgh be a lot worse?

The answer is unknown of course.

What has happened is we tried to patch up a mediocre offense the last few years dealing promising young pitching. It kept us competitive, but did not result in post season success.

Now we are paying the price as continued good young pitching has not come along. And we dealt away one of the guys who might have helped, Johan Oviedo, for a guy to help us get to post season. Then we let that guy walk. In the end that was a giveaway, although at the time it made some sense.

Now the front office has tried to fill in some younger pitching to fill the gap with some decent drafted prospects, and a deal to bring in Matt Liberatore. To date that deal has not worked, although the jury is still out.

If we are buried in the standings at the trade deadline, I wonder if we might do a reversal of our usual roster shuffling, and deal Mikolas and yes, maybe even Wainwright, to contenders for young, high ceiling pitching.

Edman and O’Neill or Carlson might go as well, as Winn is likely next year’s shortstop and we have one too many outfielders.

This one does look lopsided on the pitching match up. Castillo has been a great signing by the Mariners, while Mikolas has been bad to terrible in the early going.

Still you never know. Right now our club looks like a mix of veterans on the down side of their careers, and young guys who look to have bright futures, but are not a few years away. There is no one in the prime of their career who can carry the club.

Add to that mediocre pitching, and you see why the record is sub-.500.

I think I would let Walker get a season of AAA in, and settle on and outfield, of primarily O’Neill, Carlson, and Nootbaar left to right, with Burleson occasionally in left and at DH.

Walker is a great prospect, but hard to watch in the outfield. Both he and Contreras need to hit a lot to counter their lousy defense. But I will say, it seems whenever we make a mistake, the opponent capitalizes. When we get mistakes made by the opposition, we do not take advantage.

In summary, we do not look like a real good team, but we also seem to be snake bit. A break here and there and we could be around .500. That’s nothing to rejoice about, but is the reality when you watch these guys.

Great debut album by Steely Dan, but not a good thing for our club. They are just pounding us now. Gorman botched possible double play ball, then another hit. Monty sort of taking one for the team at this point.

Can you believe this!? The guy throws the bat at a pitch that bounced, and gets a hit!!! If that is not a microcosm of our early woes, I don’t know what is.

Jeez – that really shows how it is going for us. Get the guy in a rundown and do not get the tag on him.

Motter did not play that well – was way too far down the line.

C Walker’s stance reminds me a lot of O’Neill. He’s a little more open, but has that nice short stroke that should lead to more contact and less strikeouts, but that is not really the case with O’Neill.

Nice AB by O’Neill, laying off the pitch down on 3-2. But I thought he would hammer that 3-1 pitch. That one was right there, but he completely missed it. Two more left on after the Carlson ground out.
