Any chance the Cardinals would pursue Adam Ottavino? I feel adding him would really strengthen the bull pen. I am just not sure his asking price is within the team’s budget.

What about Brebbia? He has to be a lock to be a member of the bull pen at the start of the season.

I would agree, that all things remaining constant, replacing Fowler could provide a healthy bump in the teams win total year-over-year. The key is identifying a player, or a combination of players, that can provide offensive production at or above league average levels for an entire season. The key is how to do that.

It appears that the club has a plethora of young talent in the outfield capable of producing at these levels or better. So, should the club make another significant investment in an outfielder? Or, are they better off investing to upgrade the infield or pitching staff.

I agree that moving Fowler will be expensive. He has a large contract and would appear to be on a downward performance trend.

I am not convinced signing another outfielder is the answer at this point.

I think it is time for the club to thank Adam for all he as done and wish him well in all his future endeavors. He really has not been the same or a consistent hurler for several seasons. It is time to turn in a different direction.

I have always liked Ross. I thought the club should have taken a chance on him when he was a free agent. He can provide a quality veteran presence to a young pitching staff. I would sign him if he was willing to fill the role of a spot starter and long relief. Competitive base salary with incentives if he were to become a regular in the rotation.

Cards will only have themselves to blame if they miss the playoffs. They won only one September home game in nine attempts against Reds, Dodgers and Brewers. A playoff contending team must find a way to win four or five of these games when at home.

I really struggle with this issue …. I really appreciate all that Adam has done for the Cardinals and the career he has put together. Having said this, Adam has not been healthy and has not been able to put together a strong season for three years. Will he be capable of doing so at age 38? I hate to see beloved players end their careers on a whimper … A shadow of the player we grew to admire and look forward to seeing play. Sometimes you need to walk away.

The last post by “Cardinals2016” in this thread and watching the last several games leads me to believe the Cardinals should be sellers and evaluators. I know Dewitt and Mo have said this is a “playoff-capable roster”. However, I see too many bullpen issues and defensive lapses that need to be corrected by trades or free agency in a very short time frame … Not sure this is possible.

In my opinion, the club needs to use the remainder of the season to shed resources they know they do not want to move forward with and evaluate those that remain. I would hate to see the club go for it, fall short and be in worse shape at the end of the season then they are now. All efforts should be focused on getting the organization to position to win the Division title in 2019.

Is it possible to send Holland to Memphis or place him on the DL again? The guy looks lost … The walks keep piling up in a role that you cannot afford to walk anyone at anytime. Is it a physical issue or mental block? Or, has the league just figured him out and it is time to eat the money and let him go (I cannot believe the club is getting any calls for him)?

This is no surprise to me. The Redbirds have a roster and minor league system full of outfielders. At some point, someone is the “odd man out”. Jose has proven he can hit, but is most likely a DH and possibly outfielder moving forward. He could definitely fill the role of an effective pinch hitter and reserve outfielder. His defense is not good enough to be an everyday first baseman at this point (in my opinion).

The question is what value will teams assign to him. The Redbirds will most likely need to “package” him with someone else to get value back at the major league level. Or, possibly deal him for a prospect with potential like Mo has done in the past.

Something off the wall in an effort to improve team defense – acquire Iglesias from Detroit to be the every day shortstop and move DeJong to third base. This should provide improved infield defense and you can bring Gyrko off the bench to fill in when needed.

Leadership says they have built a playoff capable roster. My concern is that you just cannot keep making so many defensive mistakes nightbafter night if you are expecting to make the playoffs. Strong defense was a key element of winning teams in the 60’s, 80’s and over the past twenty years. I just can’t figure our why why this team struggles so much.

Poor defense is hurting this club. How many extra pitches has Martinez had to throw?

I thought Holland has had two very good outings. Hoping he is healthy and ready to roll. I have been frustrated with him, but am pulling for his recovery and contributions. Will be a big shot in the arm if he can pitch like he did against the Phillies!

Is Cecil finally coming to life?

It will be an interesting game of musical chairs if all those arms are ready to be activated in July.

I would try to be a buyer. This club has been competitive despite being plagued by injuries and without getting significant contributions from most of their highest paid players. I would try to move those not contributing and get bull pen or corner infield help.

The club just has not gotten what they expected from Wainright, Fowler, Holland, Carpenter, Cecil and Gregerson. I would love to see the club move two or three of these players. However, I Suspect that the challenge the club will face is that any trade partner will want the Cards to eat salary. In addition, some of the performances have been so poor you may not get much in return even if you eat salary.

Question: The Cardinals sent Holland to Florida for about ten days to prep for the regular season after signing him. He missed a significant portion of spring training and entered the season short on prep time. Does the club still have the ability to send him back to the minor league complex to work through issues and better prepare himself to pitch at the major league level (e.g place him on the 15 day DL)?

A couple of thoughts after I have cooled off and slept on my thoughts. I go back to an interview with TLR in which he spoke about “putting players in situations where they can succeed”…

    – Martinez has a very good bat and I agree that he should be the every day first baseman. However, he did not win that role through fielding abilities. He should be pulled in favor of a stronger defensive player in the late innings.
    – Pham just did not catch a ball he normally catches. Things like that happen … It was painful, but I can accept this.
    – Holland did not have it last night … I know he was a victim of some bad luck, but he was getting hit and I felt getting hit hard. I asked myself what TLR would have done after Holland got thru the third hitter … I think TLR would have pulled him.

I like Bowman, but I am getting concerned with over exposure. He had 75 appearances last year and 9 so far this season. I know it is early, but would he be more effective pitching a little less frequently?

I agree “BlackHillsCard”. It sure looks like the club pushed to action too soon. I think it was a good pick up. Need to find a way to get him right as soon as possible.

Good weekend for the Redbirds! They were facing an opponent that is struggling and they did not let them get a win. The competition will get stronger in the next series. However, the club goes to Chicago on a very positive note!

Having said this … It appears it could be a very long season in Cincinnati.

Holland cannot get here fast enough. The club needs someone who can consistently shut things down in the ninth.

MLB Trade Rumors indicate the Cards may be interested in Holland. What are the chances of this being true? If so, the odds on the Cardinals signing him?
