One shouldn’t expect Pham to break down, and he’s not that old for an OFer, and there is the possibility of extending Ozuna. With the amount of OF prospects we have waiting for an opportunity, the probability is that at least one will be a starter and one a 4th.

That assumes the FO sees fit to realize the error they made in obtaining Fowler. They will take their loses financially before having an overpay be the fourth outfielder.

IMO, Molina’s defensive skill are deteriorating faster than his bat is. Its a steady decline that should be expected from an aging catcher (face it, his best years are behind him) but Yadi is the last to see it. That’s a problem together with his prior controversial behavior.

Kelly switched his position to learn catching trade because the organization needed good prospects there. Kelly caught on quickly and progressed rapidly to the verge of being an MLB ready starter. So what more do you want him to do to “deserve” an opportunity to play?

If you propose trading Kelly + Flaherty + a little more to land a back of the rotation pitcher, in this case, Archer, IMO takes away from your credibility. Although the FO is inept, that would be the last straw and they’d be run out of town. Like I’ve stated before Archer isn’t worth either Flaherty or Kelly straight up and it would be the Rays throwing in the “little more”, Sabe.

BW, a couple of too many “ifs”. So you feel the solution is to have Kelly remain on the bench waiting, maybe praying, for Molina to get hurt. Knizner is not a slam dunk… Kelly is. Sure, it would be a shame to trade Kelly but what is the option for him :atrophy?. His highest value for the foreseeable future is most likely right now. I would hate to lose him but let Pena caddie for Molina. The FO flat out screwed up.

If you hand out big long term contracts with no-trade clauses to older players you might as well expect a pair of handcuffs. Fowler is the poster boy for making the most of his contract year. The Card’s FO jumped in… and in this case they misappropriated solid salary money that could have been used for what we need now. So what we are left with….. a five day old albatross. I know, Monday morning reckoning, but still another FO faux pas.

Yep, Kelly’s situation is that he has nothing more to prove at AAA, and he doesn’t have much of a future in the organization for the next three years (barring injury). Sitting on the bench at Busch became his fate when Molina was extended for those three seasons. His highest value would be with a team looking for a young C for the immediate future. A team that would want him to be part of a young core of players.

Even if he does very well during the few innings he’s penciled in to get with St. Louis, it won’t help his chances of getting more playing time since his “mentor” Molina tells MM when he wants to play. I put mentor in quotes because that isn’t really the case… he gets more instruction from MM which stirs the pot even more.

The organization continues to sabotage Kelly’s career. Its not a matter of play him or trade him because playing him is not an option.I put the blame square on the back of the FO for creating this controversy. The awkwardness is bound to be felt in the dugout.

I guess he’ll get a do-over at JC. He is not age appropriate for State College (NYPL). That .174 needs some work. Let’s see (weighing Hands) power hitter or pitcher (extra year of training)? I’d like to see what he looks like with another season at the plate. If he doesn’t improve then try the wing.

The prospect they should move to the OF or 1B is 6’4″ Brady Whalen. Those 16 errors at 3B won’t cut it there. I’d like to hear what Derek thinks about that… he’s rather high on Whalen.

1,000 pardons… you are right he was #53 on your list. I never saw a completed “Shore” or “Walton” top-70, just the prospects that corresponded with the overall top-70. Did you want to add any “rookie” prospects into the potential power category?

Pads…. so we’ll have 5 OF prospects fully ready for ’19 (your words). Where do they play?

Also: Ozuna’s arm makes him a better RF than LF. Players will take the extra base on Fowler’s wing.

And then there’s Lane Thomas, the OF brought in from TOR during July ’17 for other considerations. Palm Beach is not a pleasant stop for batters and the good ones get to skip over it. It may be that the roster there is filled with the players that Pads mentioned.

We have some position players with some pop in our lower levels that will rise in the rankings as they progress. Mendoza #26, Montero #36, Cedeno # 53 (Shore) and Bandes #58 stand out. It takes the younger guys time to develop power.

I agree that there is a general lack of power organizational-wide. There is a general lack of talent at the rookie levels, which is concerning.

Of all the things there are to worry about with this team, Fowler should be nowhere near the top of the list, IMO. Yet he keeps coming up as a perceived problem.

I would like to see a list of worries larger than Fowler telling FO where he should play, being way over-priced versus production in a spot that could be filled with a younger and less expensive player that would put up the same numbers or better. And speaking of that he’ll be blocking, for years, a spot where the organization has great prospects over and above the MLB-ready ones we have now. I worry.

He was signed to fill the lead-off spot for years, that’s already a no-go, plus all the leadership he provides walks in last to the clubhouse and beats everyone out the door… first. That tells me his leadership isn’t really up to snuff. His defense is nowhere and his bat is marginal, at best, but he’ll probably advise the FO where he wants to bat in the order. I worry.

Face it, the FO signed an albatross that has little trade value due to the overpay. The money we’re spending on DF could be used more wisely elsewhere. He’s getting an all-star salary, we’re getting far less than AS production. The main worry is that this will get worse as the contract goes on….. and on. I worry.

You’d have to drop acid to see this as a pretty picture. Perhaps some are.

The 3-way comp, although I don’t agree with much of it, is an interesting read. I always like to see what others are feeling regarding the Cards in 2018. Thanks C-2016.

We will be a wild card team several times over the next decade with just what we have now.

By 2028 there will be no one left that’s on the present roster. Maybe Fowler.

What will the Cubs or Brewers or Pirates or Reds look like between now and 2028? We should be NLC champs in 2019 with the prospects we have now. Plenty of pitching and OFs.

The window for the upper tier pitching prospects to flourish is opening right now…. starting with Flaherty.

Thanks for the taping. I didn’t realize that Flores’ sole focus was the draft. That is a huge undertaking in itself.
Some good stuff discussed in the Q/A secession. Not too many specifics on current players which is mostly out of Randy’s realm of responsibility. Regarding the Puerto Rico academies… I was so glad someone asked about the effects of the hurricane. Those problems seem to have dropped from front pages but not in reality. We being in the U.S. can’t begin to realize the stress and strain on the inhabitants there, especially the rural population. The progress has been slow.

No… no…. I merely used his name as a reference. Sorry if it was confusing.

Your last comment was very telling. “… it seemed to assume everyone would know who the guy was.” I need to think that over…. “everyone”?. It’s something like the ol’ Cuban palm ball…. you don’t really know where its coming from until its under your chin.

The last thing we need is another albatross. Those inflated contracts will nearly always bite you in the end.

No team is willing to pay for another’s poor decision.

No offense to me either. I added a disclaimer… “might”. Looking around for Cardinal related info in January gets difficult and a lot of times frustrating. I don’t know how many others feel that way, so I threw the Reuter piece up there for what it is worth. I had no idea that one’s baseball smarts is determined by Twitter followers. If that is the case, I should be required to turn in my keyboard. Actually, I got some insight from the Reuter rating, but I’ll try to be more selective when sharing with others.

A trade for Archer combined with a FA signing (or you could add in Colome there), that deal would include several 40man folks…

    IMO something like this:

    Archer
    for
    Flaherty + Knizner + Tuivalala + Voit + DGonzlaez

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    Really?

Everyday Archer… Archer…. Archer. I wish he’d get traded to the Phillies just so there won’t be anymore Archer chatter here.
